I hope no one minds if I get this started. My internet has been off and on today so I am taking my connection now! As I said in another thread, this episode still puts a pit in my stomach even today!! Nonetheless, here is my contribution for tonight: 1. What do you think is the real reason(s) Maddie married Walter? 2. An exerpt from one of the conversations in the BMW: “You don’t seem very happy," says David. "You don’t seem very unhappy," says Maddie. "Then we're even,” says David. Do you think they are even? 3. Do you feel that Agnes was speaking for you, the viewer, during her heart to heart chat with Maddie? Or do you think the writers were confessing their transgressions in the way they wrote Maddie's character at this point in the show? (and YES!!! This is a jab! ) 4. During the last car scene what do you think Maddie’s reasons were for declaring her love for David? (I am always confused by her little speech...very sweet with the music though...just very confusing!! Anyone else?) Okay! Hope I am able to get on later! Let's have some fine fun tonight!!

1. What do you think is the real reason(s) Maddie married Walter?
I think this was discussed in great detail on the Rewatching of Tracks of My Tears, however I missed that particular discussion (boy I wish I could remember where the heck I was THAT time).
My opinion: Temporary insanity. I suppose we have to accept Maddie’s explanation that her David as Pat Boone dream caused her to finally decide NOT to marry Dave. I still don’t find any reason, however, for her to take the plunge with Walter. Maddie is an obviously strong willed woman…her jaunt home notwithstanding. She didn’t need the Walter angle to keep David at bay, if that is what she wanted.

Do you think they are even?
I think at this point Dave still thinks he has the upper hand. He does not believe that Maddie is indeed hitched, therefore things, while a bit uneasy, are not that far removed from the past. Maddie is still Maddie, Dave is still Dave, they still have that spark, and while Maddie insists that the baby is Sam’s, the spaceman is unlikely to return to the scene.
Maddie on the other hand, KNOWS she is married, KNOWS (or made up the fact that) Sam is the father, and is STARTING to know that she made a mistake of biblical proportions.
They are even, but nobody is winning either.

I think that she was reflecting the views of a LOT of people, including me. I certainly didn’t want this turn of events and think the entire Walter thing was absolutely and completely out of character.
I went back and took a look at the writers’ credits for the episodes Trip to the Moon up to and including EEK and found the results quite interesting.
Glenn Gordon Caron only had one credit (Trip), but we all know he was the 300lb gorilla when it came to the scripts. Charles Eglee and Roger Director shared credits on four of those episodes (Tale in Two Cities, Cool Hand Dave I and II and Fetal Attraction). Ron Osborn had two credits (Shiksa with Jeff Reno and Eek with the aforementioned Charles Eglee). Veteran ML writer Karen Hall did Left at the Altar and Kerry Ehrin handled Father Knows Last.
Interestingly, Tracks was credited to Judith Kahan, her only ML credit, and one of only 6 shows the IMDB has her writing for, and only one of those (SCTV) gives her more than one episode.
I suppose what I am getting at here is unlike Season 5, where we could blame the revolving door of writers for screwing up our characters, the majority of the lines put on paper for Season 4 came from the same folks who gave us Witness for the Execution, Shakespeare, I Am Curious Maddie, Money, Talks, Big Man and Maddie Hayes Got Married….all terrific episodes. These were VERY talented writers.
I’m thinking they were doing the best they could under trying circumstances.
Giving a relative rookie (Kahan) a pivotal episode like Tracks was unconscionable.

I agree with you. The teasing about where this relationship was going was getting a bit long in the tooth. I don’t know if it was a bone to the audience to keep rooting for them (Dave sure took it that way) or filler.
In rewatching it, if I were Dave I would have done the same thing…just sat there and listened in silence. How the hell can you respond to what Maddie has presented and said to you in the past two episodes>

No one has ever made her feel the way David makes her feel and she is simply afraid to trust it.

Yes, very true! But, I think Dave makes his point loud and clear and Maddie knows it when he asks her what color are Walter's eyes.
And that point was that they know each other far better than most married couples, Walter and Maddie in particular!!

1. What do you think is the real reason(s) Maddie married Walter?Because he's a NSM. Wally will not challenge her in any way, get her riled up, cause an emotional upheaval. Wally will put her on a pedestal and let her be in control all the time. Maddie is tired and afraid of weathering the endless storm called Maddie and David and is up for some calm wa[l]ters. This is all conjecture of course, because honestly I don't have a clue, a clue, a clue. Cybill didn't either.

Not EVEN are they even. David has the upper hand and is relentlessly mocking Maddie. Then she is begging him to reveal his unhappiness at her outrageous act? Maddie honey, you've known the man for 3 1/2 years. Does he ever verbally express his feelings when you tell him to? NO! I think this conversation is ugly...there's just this undercurrent of hostility that REALLY shows in their 5:30am phone conversation.

Great questions, bees! I think of myself being stuck in these tough problems!
1. What do you think is the real reason(s) Maddie married Walter?
I totally agree with Grayfs answer, she is crazed with the nightmares she had on the train home. I think she has almost lost her self-confidence to manage David things and the agency, besides she is carrying the baby (I feel for her for it). She seems to forget thinking rationally. And then here is a nice and safe man helping her to feel comfortable.
IMHO, Maddie always desires to be comfortable, emotionally settled and Walter was comfortable for her, so I think she married him just for it. By the way, I wished if David had been there when Maddie was having the nightmare, crying aloud. He would have made her most comfortable.

I think this is a clever response from David, he is better at this kind game or talk than Maddie. I donft think they are even, I feel he still has energy to save themselve from this disastrous situation, trying to wake her up. But as for Maddie, she doesnft seem to know how he is feeling and what he wants her to be. This causes me pain.

3. Do you feel that Agnes was speaking for you, the viewer, during her heart to heart chat with Maddie? Yes, I feel that Agnes was speaking for all of us loyal fans. I love when Maddie says being David is a wonderful thing, real milk, first kiss. But then she compares her new husband to the white stuff, that you can depend on it...what about David, the guy who waited for 4 1/2 months, sent baby books, went to Lamaze classes, etc. ? If that's not dependable, I don't know what is. And while being a first kiss all the time can be scary, it can also be a wild, exciting ride! Or do you think the writers were confessing their transgressions in the way they wrote Maddie's character at this point in the show? (and YES!!! This is a jab! )bees...not sure I understand this part. Are you asking whether the writers may have been apologizing to the audience for the storyline, through Agnes' speech?
