Sooooooooooo...
First thing that struck me about this ep is that it really seems out of character for Maddie to insist they go to Gail to talk her into continuing to write to Macy. Hello?!?! Would David have suggested such a thing, Maddie surely would have raged about a man
writing love letters to a married woman he has no business writing letters to!Cybill knew her/our Maddie well and was absolutely right to oppose to that turn of the plot; in spite of being a fool for romance and all, she would never have suggested such a thing - that is by no means maddie-ish behavior!
I absolutely love Agnes in this ep, but I think her relationship with Bert isn't yet to compare with their bosses' one. But the seed is already planted, though - very meaningful indeed the conversation between Maddie/Bert; esp Maddie's question to Bert's fear "If I stop running, she'll catch me" - "What will happen then?" -- A good question from
the running woman "par excellence", ain't it? Stop running away yourself, and you'll see what happens, blondie!
When Maddie's upset about "a secretary pinning down a colleague on a desk" and so on, it's not the least about office decorum, I think. IMO, she's shocked... impressed... envious?? that Agnes seems to be fully capable of doing what Maddie's not: to see something (or better: someone) - to want it/him - (now, listen carefully, Maddie... drums...)
to realize and admit to herself she does so - to take the risk and give it a shot!
Yes, worldly Maddie again could learn a lot here!
Of course, the best quotable quote is "Hey, lady, wanna lick my mail?" but there are a few others that are pretty funny:
After the above-mentioned, my favorite is David's smirkingly purred
"La dolce DiPesto!" I like the way he says it - sounds dirty at first, but I think he means it really sweet, admiring and honestly glad for Agnes (just like the wink he gave her in "North by North DiPesto" when he learned she had met a man at the banquet, "facial hair and all").
A: "Mr. Hayes, Miss Addison..."
M: "Close enough."
D: "I stitched a scarlet K on his shirt so everybody'd know what kind of knucklehead he was!"
D: "What are you writing?"
M: "My will. This place is making me suicidal."
D: "Oh yeah? Make sure you leave me something."
M: "Consider yourself left." ouch!
M: "...she continues writing to him."
D: "Right."
M: "Write!"
D: "Write?!"
M: "Right!"
M: "It's a love from afar."
D: "It's not a love from a-anywhere!"
M: "Kick it or I'll kick you!" (Macy's door)
D: "Easy choice."
