LOL, bees--he would definitely be the sexiest sexist!! Woo!
I actually think his reaction has nothing to do with a double standard, and everything to do with his emotional investment (recognized or not) in Maddie. He wouldn't have that reaction to Magillicudy or Viola not because they're men, but because he's not "in care" with them...
But, of course, Maddie can't see that yet, and so she jumps to an (admittedly, fairly logical) conclusion...

What kinds of things would have made their way into the episodes, had product placement been an advertising method in 1987? Alcoholic beverages.....Ford....Birthcontrol ... The last one mentioned is a biggie that should/would have been used in epiosdes 3/4 of the BIG 4! LOL

Hey, kids! Ah, this is gonna be fun... 4. David tells Maddie she should talk to him because they are "friends". Are they really friends? Got any better words to describe their relationship at this point? This is where some smart folks should have invented another word to describe these two. Acquaintances, contacts, buddies, pals, associates, partners, allies...nothing seems to fit. Lovers? Not in the traditional sense of the word. Lovettes? Pre-Lovers (kinda like that pre-engagement ring thing)? Budding Boinkers To Be? OK, I'm LOL'ing at the library...that's gotta be a faux pas. Seriously, gray, where WERE you in 1987??? The writing staff sure coulda used you--can't you just see "Budding Boinkers to Be" as the tagline in a TV Guide ad? ;D Gray really knows how to keep us entertained around here for sure! I'm LOL so much!

1. What is driving David in that opening scene between them to get Maddie to fight with him?
He does like to rile her, doesn't he? But he also doesn't want to feel like she's keeping anything from him. His look when she says, "Did it ever occur to you that I might want to sort it out, in private?" is funny--like, wha?
It's pretty interesting that he feels like he has the right to know what's bothering her...and should be pretty revealing (to her) when he feels hurt that she hasn't "shared."
Oh, also, just have to say how much I love his little chuckle when he says, "And the papers say I have a big ego!" Dang, he's good...
K, I'm off! Night, kids!

I wouldn't necessarily put a "friends" stamp on their relationship, but I like the tone of Maddie's reply, her soft-spoken, whole-hearted acknowledgment that they are friends (I half expected her to say, "Well I wouldn't call it that"). But then Maddie retreats again, saying, "But this is not a 'friend' thing." Of course it is, under circumstances in which there is no attraction, therefore will be no hurt feelings, shock, jealousy, anger, etc. They are so many different things to each other, but they only have one acceptable term to define it on a personal level: friends.

3. Bruce's acting is always acknowledged in this episode, and rightly so. But what is your feeling about Cybill's acting here? Who had the harder job with this episode and why?
I always enjoy Brucefs brilliant performance in this episode and love the whole thing about David. As everyone already said, I feel he is perfect.
As for Maddie, I always love Maddiefs restrained expression on her face. In the night discussion when sitting on the couch she is urged by David, slightly disappointed by his words gwefre friendsh, seeking how he would feel about her if she says it, her face is distorted by anguish and gthe bad thoughtsh, that her look Ifve never seen before. And when she reveals her wants to be bad, I think his reaction is totally different from what she has wanted and it disappoints her. And when she gets to know he wants just her safe, she becomes sarcastic and throws the ultimate words towards him, and leaves. I think itfs very hard for Maddie to gfly freeh, but her anger occurred here makes her try it, she knows she has to deal with it by herself. And I also think Cybill did the great job by not revealing a lot, but given the hint that Maddiefs pretty mixed feelings were significant and gave the depth to the following episodes.

I donft think this would be better but I feel they are already platonic lovers, I suppose Maddie has already known she loves David, but has no idea if she is going to tell it to him, and David doesnft try to think about it, but he always does everything for her. I think they are certainly more than friends, a very special and closest person for each other.

6. I could do about 50 questions on this topic....but let's just keep it open ended. Discuss the scene at Maddie's door........
I felt like all the dream had gone when a stranger came out of her door wearing his unbuttoned pajamas. It terribly shocked not only David, but every viewer I suppose, and it is really heartbreaking to see David leaving there... However I think the scene is so beautiful by Brucefs performance, expressing his every emotion and the depth of his feelings for her. Perfect!

gray, I forgot to mention your avatar - chuckle-worthy, as usual. Keep 'em coming. OMG Grays avatar is greatness! Thanks Gang! I figured after 20 plus years at least my avatar should have a bit of success! (Forgive me Dave!) Me thinks that I will replace Sam for next week as well, if I can blend the photo correctly....
