2. In almost every episode, David propositions Maddie one way or another. Why, when she clearly told him she was looking for "fulfillment", did he not offer...even as his normal wisecracking self? For two reasons, as far as I can see. 1) David could tell from the amount of time it took to bring out Maddie's confession, this was no time for his usual games. The only propositioning he attempted was to get her to fight with him, because aside from that being part of his daily routine, it gets him hot. 2) Maddie did not even give him the opportunity to become Dirty Dave. "I'd like to find some man..." She is clearly not inviting a "friend". Besides, David is too dumbfounded by Maddie's revelation to offer anything. The whole day has been a conundrum for Dave: nothing is as it should be.

3. Bruce's acting is always acknowledged in this episode, and rightly so. But what is your feeling about Cybill's acting here? Who had the harder job with this episode and why? Cybill had to seriously tone down Maddie's high-energy, high-spirited nature. It seems like she's starting a mid-life crisis/her biological clock is pounding. Great acting, but it doesn't seem quite as challenging as the emotional breadth Bruce needed to convey. David is concerned, hurt, confused, terrified, desperate, defeated, etc., etc.

5. Maddie does not end up connecting with a stranger. Is that because of the circumstances, or because of who she is? I think the circumstances remind Maddie of who she is. If we want to consider her "not even know his name" literally, she went against that right off the bat when she exchanged names with her 2 potential "suitors" at the bar. But based on those unpleasant experiences, we didn't even see her try for "3x a charm"...guess to her that was Shammy. Point being, it doesn't take Maddie very long to realize her mistakes (until Season 4 that is). So she heads home, remembering that what she yearns for deep down is a meaningful relationship, possibly with the guy who is lovingly stalking "her" all over the city?

6. I could do about 50 questions on this topic....but let's just keep it open ended. Discuss the scene at Maddie's door........ Wow. The transition from the trademark Addison smirk along with "Now, I know it's 4:00 in the morning," to the look in his eyes when the door opens. Absolute devastation. It's like his heart crashed into the pit of his stomach. Then, the smirk returns when Dave tells Sam, "No, no don't do that...." Smiling through the pain. "It's really not that important." Oh, David.

Instead I thought someone would point out that we were NOT supposed to interpret it literally. It just occurred to me during my rewatch that Maddie was not approaching this situation the way she imagined. At the end of the day, she doesn't just give herself to people; she has to think about it, consider, contemplate. Maddie is not having a one-night stand with any old Moe

It just occurred to me during my rewatch that Maddie was not approaching this situation the way she imagined. Nicely put, witness...and isn't it interesting that Maddie's imagination is so much more fiery than the reality? That is, until she slaps David in "I am Curious"...and her imagination and reality collide.

3. Am I crazy, or did the writers get the whole goose/gander comment backwards? (That one has always bugged me!) I think "is forbidden for the gander" was supposed to mean " by the gander." That's the only thing I can think of, aside from a writer's blunder.

2. When David yells, "I don't wanna hear this," what's behind Maddie's response to him? Because Maddie didn't want to discuss it with David to begin with, even told him "you don't want to hear this." She is 1)embarrassed and 2)aware that there are underlying feelings between them and this revelation may upset him. But his urgent and heartfelt pursuit of her confession is touching to her, so she lets loose. David's reaction offends Maddie because she is not used to revealing intimate feelings and initially he made her feel safe to do so. Perhaps she hoped that once she confided in him, he could gently talk her out of the illicit rendevous. Instead, he gets angry, even mocks her, reminding her why she doesn't fully trust him. Maddie feels judged and rejected.

4. To what extent do you think David realizes/recognizes his feelings, before Joan lays them bare? Great question, jen. Obviously David has not yet characterized his feelings as "I'm in love with this woman." All he knows is, he has always tried hard to look out for Maddie and has her best interests at heart. It's evident that David wants her to be happy, whatever that means for her. Still, he needed someone very sensitive and perceptive (Joan) to pick up on his cues, point out what they reveal, and spring him into action. Ahh, the kindness of strangers.

However, my copy of the script, which I'm pretty sure is not a final copy, does read " for the gander"...I wonder if diane and lin's copies are the same???

I was going to ask about the script, but I figured it must say "for", not "by", otherwise that would mean Cybill got the line wrong (gasp!) and they didn't have time to edit.
Someone once said, "A preposition is something one should never end a sentence with." ;D
