OK, it's getting better... yes, the plot is definitely taking a turn!
1. In the opening scene, Sam asks Maddie if she is okay. Why?Because he senses damn well that she's not. You can tell by the look on her face, she looks really... I dunno... worried, confused... not at all pleased, happy, satisfied... like you should look after the first romantic night.
And isn't the exchange between Bert and Maddie so abso-to-lutely revealing? "An entire night of betrothed bliss, you know?" - "No, I don't!" Well, let me put it this way: you don't know
yet, Blondie! ;D
2. In both Blonde on Blonde and Sam and Dave, David plans to tell Maddie about his feelings for her, but is thwarted by Sam. In this episode, David finally has the opportunity to talk to Maddie - in the office, in the car and in his apartment - yet he doesn't. Why not?I think he's afraid he's already lost her to Sam, especially after the previous evening, after making a complete idiot of himself. He must have been led to the impression that Maddie didn't care about what he wanted to tell her, regarding that, in the dinner scene of
Sam an Dave, she declared the meeting was over when Sam came back to the table much too early
(rat bastard!!)David simply doesn't want his aorta to be stomped on any more.
And then, in his apartment? Well, I'm pretty sure if the scene didn't end so abruptly, there would have been said more, so much more by both of them. They were still kind of dancing around each other, slowly approaching each other, but were on the same level. In some sense they had declared their feelings for each other - oh, come on, they were speaking in a code both understood; it was crystal clear to both of them what their
I hate you's meant! I wished at that moment, Maddie wasn't so smart to sort the case out exactly in that absolutely wrong moment! Couldn't she be a bit - just a
little bit - dumber??
Hmmm... the trunk scene without Maddie's mascara (anyway, every girl should know that you're to remove your make up before you go to sleep, right, girls?!) ruining everything - another good setting for a piece of fanfic... gotta take notes rightaway... but I disgress.
3. In Sam and Dave, Maddie puts her personal life before her professional responsibility by choosing dinner with Sam over the McLafferty case. The next day, she does the exact opposite. What has changed?I think she wants to be with David to get an opportunity to grill him about the
big decision he had been talking about; she is quite sure that he wanted to tell her something like he's
in care with her, and she desperately wants to hear it. So she jumps on the occasion of spending time with him and maybe making him confess.
4. What is happening in the drive and talk scene when they are on the way to see Elaine Johnson? What game are they playing? There is no playing games. I think in that moment everything is quite clear to
both of them. They have admitted their feelings (well... kind of) to each other, sealed them with a kiss, and now - before sorting everything out completely - they squeeze the solution of the case in.
Both are back to their normal selves then; did you notice how everything was going on in a hilarious and funny way, how everything was enlightened after the trunk scene? After so much amotional rollercoaster, they even put some nice lines in:
"Hurry up!" - "I love it when you play rough."
"Save that stuff for the romantic scenes!"
"Fire at will! Or Alan, or..."
Of course, because everybody thought: bingo, that's it, dilemma solved! Oh, how brilliant the writing was, hob subtly that turning point was conveyed to make the viewers think that this was the happy ending...
5. Elaine Johnson comments that women make love with their hearts. David glances at Maddie. What is he thinking? She's right, Blondie. Just listen to your heart.6. Why do you think Sam chooses this particular moment to propose? Do you think it was planned or was it a spur of the moment question?Planned. He was annoyed I think - even if he didn't show it - that Maddie preferred to go on a night stakeout with David instead of spending an romantic evening with the
shammering knight. He felt that things weren't going that easy for him as he had supposed they would, especially after the (for David) desastrous previous evening, that arrogant
rat bastard.
7. Discuss the significance of the trunk scene (sigh). Is it a turning point in their relationship? Does it tell David what he wants to know?Yes and yes.
As I said above, in my eyes they confess their love for each other on that trunk. And hadn't Maddie interrupted (unvoluntarily), they would have gone on with their talking, would have become more serious. From here on there's no way back to pretending there's nothing serious between them (they'll try, of course, but as we know it won't work).
Maddie herself claimed this occasion as a
major event in her life when she says something like since she was thirteen on every major event in her life she'd been crying.
8. In the words of an oldie but goodie, "if you want to know if he loves you so, it's in his kiss". What does Maddie learn from David's kiss?I'm sorry, but I really don't wanna analyze this kiss. I just love it. It's sweet and tender, it's a promise, and what I like best is that David leans in, but as soon as their lips touch, Maddie presses in as to make sure she doesn't miss a thing.
9. In this episode, we get to see the situation from Maddie's point of view. How do you feel after experiencing Maddie's inner struggle?I still don't quite get it.
Sure, I could understand maybe considering a life with someone like Sam when there's nobody better around, but as long as there's real love waiting just around the corner (or just behind the doors of the adjoining office), how can you give it a second thought??
I absolutely don't second that nonsense about
love is not enough - yes, some relationships
are difficult, and yes, you have to put hard work in
every relationship to make it work constantly, but as long as there's love there's no way you can
not make it work out! My conviction. But maybe I'm just a hopelessly romantic fool that knows nothing about real life.
So, to answer the question - well, I have a bit of sympathy for Maddie's inner struggle, it's just such Maddie-tude (thanks, witness
) but deep, deep,
deep down I don't see her point. Sorry.
10. Maddie rushes over to David's apartment in the middle of the night. Seems pretty spontaneous, unless she weighed the pros and cons before rushing over. Is this a case of role reversal?Well, she's riding on an emotional rollercoaster, just like us, poor thing. She didn't weigh no pros and cons, she was pondering over Sam's proposal, and she couldn't ignore any longer what she knew: that David had wanted to tell her something about his feelings for her.
Spontaneous? Yes, well, no... a forced spontaneity. She was desperate, and she needed to know it for sure, to hear it.
OK, I can understand here that she wants to actually hear it from David, like:
fella, if I'm that important to you that I think - hope - I am, you gotta have the guts to spill it out. Now! Oh, damn. I just realized gotta change my top 6 list.
