Maud......
How amazing that in all the years we've talked about theses episodes, nobody picked up the clothing in these two episodes! Bravo to you!
We need to keep on talking, and finding more. We were talking about another rewatch.....let's see if we can pull this together,
And.....you're never too late to the party. Welcome, come on in. Here's your hat and your streamers....would you mind holding up the other end of that limbo pole?
Ok, so I had to watch this darned episode AGAIN last night - I've got my Ray Bans on, the boom box out and the coat rack (a.k.a the limbo stick) at the ready! Some more thoughts...
In Maddie's dream, Rita sings "Blue Moon" which at first watch, just seems like a reference to the detective agency. But listen to the words!
"Blue Moon, you saw me standing alone
Without a dream in my heart, without a love of my own
Blue Moon, you know just what I was there for
You heard me saying a prayer for, someone I really could care for
And then there suddenly appeared before me
The only one my arms will hold
I heard somebody whisper please adore me
And when I looked to the Moon it turned to gold
Blue Moon, now I'm no longer alone
Without a dream in my heart, without a love of my own
And then there suddenly appeared before me
The only one my arms will ever hold
I heard somebody whisper please adore me
And when I looked the Moon had turned to gold"
To me, this describes Maddie the day she loses all of her money, walks into "City of Angels" and meets our hero. Maddie wants her ideal man - one that fits the mold she thinks he should. And, more than anything, she wants to be sure he does not betray her (which of course, Zach does in this dream sequence). I think that ultimately represents Maddie's fear here. And Zach is more than she can handle - much like her feelings for David. In the dream, Rita says of their relationship, "I don't think I understand it myself." And then, "I wish we could go on like this but it can't. We can't." Sound like "To Heiress Human" to anyone else?
And then, let's take David's dream in which Rita sings, "Told You I Love You Now Get Out!" Let's check out those lyrics:
"I've told ya I love ya, now get out!
Everything's rosy and everything's jake,
But just how much can a good girl take?
I told ya I love ya, now get out!
There may be times I need ya, there's no doubt;
Baby, now you're somethin' I can do without!
Leave your number and go on home,
The doorway was there, which is by the phone!
I've told ya I love ya, now get out!
Baby, please leave me be,
You want a puppet and there's no strings on me!
Get hip, you can leave on the five eighteen,
Now don't go 'way sayin' I've been mean;
Like any gal I can change my ways,
A round trip ticket good for sixty days!
I've told ya I love ya, now get out!
Man, get lost - for now!"
GREAT GOOGILY MOOGILY! Is this not the story of David's prior loves (Tess and Gillian?) They say they love him and then they split! So, in this case too, the song represents his ultimate fear - he gives a woman his heart and then she leaves him high and dry. Not to mention David's lines at the beginning of this dream sequence... "I can tell you exactly when Rita came into my life, exactly where where she was from. I just didn't know where it would all end up." And then, "That was the first time I saw Rita. She looked like she was misunderstood. Me, I wanted to understand her. Like I've never understood any woman before. Come to think of it, I never have understood any woman before." IMHO, if we could hear David Addison's inner monologue the minute Maddie Hayes first walked into his life, would they not be the same? Also in David's dream sequence, Rita says, "These have been the best 2 weeks of my life, and the worst two weeks". Sure sounds like the start of season 4 to me when Maddie says that about the month she and David have been sleeping together.
"The plot thinnens..."
