As I was getting ready to rewatch this show, I, as usual, pulled out the old VHS and found this show to contain (ta da) commercials! My tape was from a rerun in late March 1986, not the original November 85 debut, but what the heck. I taped it from WPVI, the ABC affiliate in Philadelphia.
Before the show: TV Movie: The 4th Wise Man 86 Pontiac Pacesetters (Regional Ad) Action News promo
First Break 7Up Keebler Club Crackers Heinz Ketchup and Cocktail Sauce TV Shows: Premieres of Mr. Sunshine and Joe Bash
Second Break Movie: The Money Pit Jackie Gleason for Master Card TV Shows: Dynasty, Hotel, The Colby's ABC Business Brief (The Dow was at only 1778.50 and gold was $343 an ounce. T Bills were providing 6.4%) Prince Spaghetti Sauce Canada Tourism Bell of PA Action News Promo - US Missile Strike on Libya
Third Break Maybeline Expert Eyes Liner and Moisture Whip FTD Easter Flowers US Navy A ladies hygiene product with who appears to be a very young Courtney Cox TV Movie: Pleasures
Fourth Break Mercury Cougar Wendy's Chicken Club Huggies Diapers TV Show: Spenser for Hire
Over Credits More plugs for Mr. Sunshine, Joe Bash and Spenser for Hire

Evenin' folks. I haven't come up with any questions yet, but I thought I would start off with an observation. I'm not sure that my thoughts are coherent, but here goes.
If you remove "Somewhere" from the lineup and consider it a "stand alone" episode, I really like the flow from Knowing Her to Portrait. In Knowing Her, Maddie realizes that she is jealous of Gillian and let's not forget the ending where David wants to leave the rose and note for Maddie, but thinks better of it...not that he didn't have feelings for her, but probably didn't want to reveal too much to Maddie.
Open - Portrait. There is a certain "comfortableness" that comes across in their opening scene, as if they are in a good place. David is teasing Maddie about her penchant for work while Maddie pounds away on her calculator. Then there is the embrace and then the very special looks that they exchange. David is in heaven and Maddie has a pretty smoky look in her eyes. Move on to Maddie asking David to help her figure out what to do with the money. She wanted to involve him and even seemed to find his sometimes outlandish suggestions as humorous. She didn't yell or scream, she just had a smile in her eyes that seemed to indicate that she was enjoying David being David.
I don't know what all that means, but I just really liked it.

OH, I also have to mention that Maddie wears the blue/gray dress in this episode which was one of her most frequent "repeat" outfits during the first 3 seasons, right up to Heiress (without the belt and with a long pink jacket and not the short one). I really like that dress. OK, who can name episodes where she wears it? The Man Who Cried Wife pops into my head right away.

In this episode, we have the recurrent theme of Maddie's romanticism. Maddie is almost over the top with her dreams of Philip Wright idolizing her. Do you think that David is surprised by the depth of her feelings? Do you think he gains any insight into Maddie's psyche?

I really loved the dialogue in this script. There are so many little gems. Some of my favorites (besides "get your hand off my behind"): "They usually only mark the 'hard to see' places." "Killing yourself because you can't get a date with the homecoming queen is not the act of a sane man." "My goodness....." spoken perfectly by David. "The purpose of this morning's meeting has been to brainstorm." "To what-storm?" "Funny. Hurtful, but very funny." "He wasn't overseas. He was up the river." "Dead guy had hiccups?" "I feel stupid." "Gee, you look so soft and supple." "You slither great." "You keep wearing that much makeup and they'll lose interest." Any other favorites?

David is pretty hard on Maddie when she buys the portait and scoffs at her belief that Philip Wright killed himself for her. But, in the end, when Maddie realizes the truth about the portrait and is feeling badly, David is sympathetic by telling her he's sorry that it all turned out the way that it did. Does Maddie learn anything about David?

Do you think that David is surprised by the depth of her feelings? Do you think he gains any insight into Maddie's psyche? First---Lin, I share your sentiments exactly about this episode! I just love it! The looks, the banter, the innuendo...all Moonlighting in top form! And Cybill's hair! I tried so hard back in the 80's to make my hair look like hers! LOL! Your thoughts are very coherent!! As far as your q's: I don't think David is surprised at all that Maddie seemed to go over top with the portrait of herself, but I do think he came to the realization that Maddie really cared about how her image was portrayed during her modeling days. She fell for the Charles Wright story of seeing her picture in Paris. It was romantic to her and she liked the idea that she had that effect on her fans. Is this her vanity going overboard? I don't know, maybe a little. But, remember in "Somewhere..." she liked the idea that she was more than a pretty face. Does David gain insight to Maddie's psyche? LOL! Great question! I think he is so busy bantering in this ep that he gives the impression that he missed a few chances to do so, but I feel pretty sure that he peeled another layer back of Madelyn Hayes and walked away a little more confused...and intrigued beyond measure! The poor slob! ;D

One that I just caught today that I couldn't believe made it past the censors is when David is spinning the idea about extra money...can't remember the exact full quote (go figure ) and he says something like "...makes thighs part..." ;D I was like whoa!! I never heard that before!!

Just got in from work kiddos...gimme a few minutes to rewatch, prep the old avatar and join right in!
Oh, and let me state for the record, they did NOT film the loft sequences at my apartment. I will remain silent on the topic of them borrowing my photograph collection, however.

Do you think that David is surprised by the depth of her feelings? Do you think he gains any insight into Maddie's psyche? I think Dave is quite amused and actually, quite pleased that old icy blondie has a romantic side that peeks out from under that cool exterior from time to time. I think he does get frustrated when Maddie can never translate that romantic ideal into a real flesh and blood relationship with our hero. At this point Dave still thinks there is a chance they will wind up together. Heck, he let her squeeze her behind...and didn't kick him in the, er, shins in retaliation! And the way she blew a kiss at the end....green epoxy never looked so good. Seasons one and two do a great job in balancing the fun cases, the office and the budding romance. I think this episode does great all the way around.
