Open - Portrait. There is a certain "comfortableness" that comes across in their opening scene, as if they are in a good place. David is teasing Maddie about her penchant for work while Maddie pounds away on her calculator. Then there is the embrace and then the very special looks that they exchange. David is in heaven and Maddie has a pretty smoky look in her eyes. Move on to Maddie asking David to help her figure out what to do with the money. She wanted to involve him and even seemed to find his sometimes outlandish suggestions as humorous. She didn't yell or scream, she just had a smile in her eyes that seemed to indicate that she was enjoying David being David. I don't know what all that means, but I just really liked it. Some cool ideas in there, Lin. I think they have developed a rapport at this point, but are still holding each other at arm's length --- That great hug not withstanding!!! I think Maddie is still shaking her head at David quite a bit......although she is having some difficulty resisting his charms. But there is still a little distance to get past.......thankfully, 'cause it makes Atlas Belched that much yummier!!!!

David is pretty hard on Maddie when she buys the portait and scoffs at her belief that Philip Wright killed himself for her. But, in the end, when Maddie realizes the truth about the portrait and is feeling badly, David is sympathetic by telling her he's sorry that it all turned out the way that it did. Does Maddie learn anything about David? Dave was hard on Maddie because he was ACTUALLY being supportive of her early on, despite the antics. He never really thought she would blow the money on a jacuzzi or items found in the classified ads (kids...that's what we used before Craigslist to buy old stuff). That was just Dave being Dave. Until she blew it on the painting. He considered that right up there with any of his other ideas! I think at the end, Maddie knew, once again, that no matter what, dear old Dave was going to be right there with her, giving her crap if necessary, but right at hand.

This ep is packed with little gems, isn't it? One that I just caught today that I couldn't believe made it past the censors is when David is spinning the idea about extra money...can't remember the exact full quote (go figure ) and he says something like "...makes thighs part..." ;D I was like whoa!! I never heard that before!! Agree, bees. That's a good one, pretty risque for that time.

Gray, that was my first call....though I almost went with the slither scene! ;D Gosh, I need to get a life...I get way to excited about your avatar choices! LOL! Eagle eyed members will notice that I grabbed that screen capture from the teaser at the end of the broadcast of Rainbow....the actual Portrait scene does not get so graphic. And yes, I had considered the slither scene as well...but got home late!

In this episode, we have the recurrent theme of Maddie's romanticism. Maddie is almost over the top with her dreams of Philip Wright idolizing her. Do you think that David is surprised by the depth of her feelings? Do you think he gains any insight into Maddie's psyche? I really think David is a little amused.....and really thinks Maddie is a little over the top on this. I've gotta say, in this episode, I am not really enthralled with our Maddie....outside of the fact that she is amazingly beautiful, especially in the first office scene.....but that is really a Cybill compliment! Maddie, meanwhile, gets wrapped up romantically in the notion of someone so in love with the mere idea of her, that death is the only option. That always struck me as quite self centered and selfish....not really the Maddie I know and love. And so our David becomes Jiminy Cricket -- the voice of conscience.....and all of his hysterical retorts and banter designed to bring her back to earth....to say nothing of his pointed remark about the poor slobs who live for her! I have always been very critical of those I call the Maddie bashers....but I am a little happy at her comeuppance in this episode......even more so, though, that she recognizes it herself in time.

Wow Diane, I never really looked at Maddie in a bad light in this episode. I suppose I agreed with her that it was her company, her risk and her reward to do with as she pleased.
I considered her spending as a "victimless crime" in my opinion, which I didn't hold against her.
I bet the finders fee for the REAL painting made up for the few coins tossed at that rather amateur oil. (Not that I could do any better...I am completely talentless!)

I've gotta say, in this episode, I am not really enthralled with our Maddie....outside of the fact that she is amazingly beautiful, especially in the first office scene.....but that is really a Cybill compliment! I wonder if subconsciously she didn't go the extra mile, considering she would be featured in scenes opposite her younger self! To me though, Cybill's looks in this particular episode are some of the tops in series history....even in green paint.

If you remove "Somewhere" from the lineup and consider it a "stand alone" episode, I really like the flow from Knowing Her to Portrait. Can anyone check the dates on the production scripts for Knowing Her, Somewhere and Portrait so we can compare against the original air dates of 12, 19 and 26 Nov 85? That might help clear up this situation with Rainbow potentially being aired out of sequence.

I really loved the dialogue in this script. There are so many little gems. Some of my favorites (besides "get your hand off my behind"): "They usually only mark the 'hard to see' places." "Killing yourself because you can't get a date with the homecoming queen is not the act of a sane man." "My goodness....." spoken perfectly by David. "The purpose of this morning's meeting has been to brainstorm." "To what-storm?" "Funny. Hurtful, but very funny." "He wasn't overseas. He was up the river." "Dead guy had hiccups?" "I feel stupid." "Gee, you look so soft and supple." "You slither great." "You keep wearing that much makeup and they'll lose interest." Any other favorites? Lots of wonderful lines......so here's a few more "A blonde and her vanity....." "Next windfall we get, can I stick a statue of myself in the lobby?' "Elvis memorabilia?" -- given Cybill's revelations about him "Notwithstanding the bondage angle...which for my taste adds appreciably to the pose's artistic allure...." "He wasn't perusing a certain portrait...was he? This must be one hell of a painting!" "What are you doing...and is it supposed to hurt?" and in terms of risque......here's one that didn't make it past the censors -- VOICE: Where's the Dutchess? (spelling as in script) DAVID (to Maddie): You didn't tell me you were living with anybody. HARRY: (ignoring that): Where's the Dutchess? DAVID: A Dutchess too. You're a much more progressive girl than I would have imagined.

I agree, lin. I love how Maddie doesn't hesitate to fly into David's arms when she realizes they're "in the black." She treats him in this scene very much as an equal partner (and that "smoky look"--well said--implies even more!). It's not until David gets sarcastic about her vanity (in a zinger of a line) that she gets back on her "it's my company, my money" high horse.

The first date noted on the script is September 30, 1985 and the final date is October 29.

I just laughed out loud in a very quiet library reading all those quotes--dang, this really is a funny episode! But I think my favorite line has to be "You're so beautiful when you get fiscal." The expression on David's face...makes me a little swoony, every time.

Gray, I had absolutely no issue with Maddie taking and spending the money any way she chose, for all the reasons you've listed. My issue was the self absorption......and the seeming "romance" of it all. I appreciate her giving the painting away...even if it seems a lot like doing the right thing for the wrong reason. I guess, not being someone known for extraordinary beauty, that I find it hard to wrap my head around the mindset that thinks that anyone could get even a small ego boost from someone dying for you......maybe I am just being too literal. I have got to tell you, I own a vanity much like the one in the episode (think it was a standard piece in the deluxe bedroom suite of the 20's), and admittedly, spent a little time sitting in front of it, contemplating this episode, when it originally aired.

Well, I definitely think David gets a little open window here...as gray said, the Ice Queen reveals a very definite romantic side--though the object of her romanticism is a little ridiculous to him. To me, Maddie's vision of Philip Wright as a prieux chevalier, pining away for love of her, is another example of her naivete about relationships--she constructs this castle-in-the-sky scenario that ends up bearing little relation to the truth (we see this again in "Yours, Very Deadly," when she wants Mrs. Woodley to allow Macy to keep writing). David, being more earthbound (not to mention, earthy!) and having been scorched more than once, takes a more cynical view.
