OK......rewatched, read the script, and listened to the commentary.
I'll drop a few Qs here, and then chime in with a few more.
1. The bumper at the beginning of the episode is, believe it or not, in the script -- although it is billed as "Special Opening" (This is an episode for which I have a very late script.....dated 2/14 for a 2/18 airing).
Soooooo....how did you like this opening?
2. Why is Maddie so nervous? Does this say something about her relationship with her parents, or just generalize the relationships between parents and children?
3. What is your first impression about the relationship between Maddie and her parents, and specifically her father? Can you project forward to the season 4 episodes with them, and do those impressions hold true?
4. When Maddie explains the situation to David, why does he jump to the conclusion that Mr. Hayes IS having an affair? Or does he?

5. There is great chemistry in the scene when David offers to be Maddie's detective....and then he breaks it by cracking wise about the photos. Was he just being David or did he changing the mood intentionally?
6. In the commentary, Glenn comments on the amount of time without dialogue in this episode. Do you feel it enhances or detracts from the story?
7. Any thoughts of why Maddie took out her anger on her father physically? Do you feel it was true to her character?
8. In my opinion, Cybill is absolutely amazing in this episode. What's your favorite scene and why?
9. This is a question specifically for Gray, but I think we might all like to jump in on it:
Listening to Cybill on the commentary, and exploring my own feelings about this episode, leads me to believe this is more of a woman's episode. Gray, can you give us the guy's perspective on this one? And does anyone agree or disagree with my view?
That's all for now....... please add more if you've got 'em.
Also, the script, because it was so close to air, doesn't have many changes...but there are a few omitted scenes that I'll post later.....

Oooops....now my quirky observations:
Is it a sign of the times that Alexander Hayes would be in a hotel room, hear a knock, and yell, "Come in, it's open"? Now we think....knock knock, who's there, axe murderer.....
Funniest thing in the commentary.......when discussing the wardrobe, GGC says "It was the Superbowl every day." Made me laugh out loud.
And I loved Cybill in the commentary.....much more than the long awaited season 3 reunion of the big 3.......I think she was much more relaxed, and genuine. And I love that she did her homework -- how very Maddie-like of her.

Soooooo....how did you like this opening? Loved it. I loved most of these last minute fillers. They allowed the characters to play, well, CHARACTERS out of their normal situation...a wonderfully unique and innovative concept that has obviously been copied by many others since...but this was the first show to do it with pizzaz!

Oh, I think that most kids, especially of our generation, wanted to impress our parents. I remember hearing from both my mom and dad, time and time again, that all they wanted was for their kids to have it better than they did. I suppose that most of us with parents who lived through the depression heard that repeatedly.
Maddie didn't want to disappoint. Of course they knew of her stellar modeling career, and I suppose of her financial issues that followed. I suspect she wanted to show even mom and dad that she was more than a "pretty face".
One telling thing was where Mrs. Hayes mentioned that she heard alot about David, obviously from Maddie. Hmmm.

I LOVED it. Only on Moonlighting could you have people stay in character and talk about "the show", the script, next season, etc. Also, they both look fantastic and the little glances are awesome. I especially love the look on Maddie's face at the very end when David tells everyone to keep those cards and letters coming in. OUTstanding!

I think this was PERFECT casting, as we have seen so much in this series. I actually 100% believed that Robert and Eva Marie WERE Maddie's parents from the first flickers on the tube.
So, with Maddie growing up in the 50's and early 60's, I suspect Mrs. Hayes ran the homestead while the Mister developed his practice. Alexander gives off the vibe that he works hard and expect results and I think that rubbed off on his daughter. She wasn't satisfied just getting a few gigs at the local department store fashion show...she went to the very top of her profession. Alex appreciates fine things...cars, suits, champagne, and this was obviously passed down to his daughter.
I think Mrs. Hayes knew that she was living in a house with two strong personalities, and did what she could to keep the place on an even keel. She let Maddie vent by slamming doors and seemed to intercede whenever tension arose between father and offspring.
I don't recall this affair ever being referred to in later episodes, so I suppose Mrs. Hayes, true to form, forgave her husband much as Maddie did. As to them being true to character in Season 4...yeah, I think they maintained that quite well.

I believe that most children seek the approval of their parents and do not want to disappoint. Maddie is no different. Add to that the fact that she adores her parents and admires them. I think she really has them up on a pedestal and idealizes their relationship. She really wants to show them that she is doing well at her new career and as a business owner.

She's baaaaack!! ....we need a dancing emoticon...or not....... Hope you are feeling better diane! I LOVE this opener. It reflects Bruce getting into the whole McMahon controversy at the time while he plays David, so you are left to think or feel that Bruce and David are one and the same....does this even make sense?! And then I get the feeling Cybill is playing herself, yet Maddie is peeking out! Anyway, just really like it! Gray, that looks so real it's scary!! LOL!

4. When Maddie explains the situation to David, why does he jump to the conclusion that Mr. Hayes IS having an affair? Or does he?
I don't think he really DOES. My impression was that David was trying to feel out Maddie (ah, don't take that the wrong way....ah hell go ahead) with regards to what her impressions were, and what her reaction would be if it were indeed true. He tried to have Maddie see this objectively, as a man and woman case, not her parents, which she could obviously NOT do...no human being could be that objective.
I don't think Dave himself is convinced until he finds out Mr. Hayes is a registered guest at the other hotel...the actual meeting of Alex's girlfriend at the door is just the bitter icing on the cake.

I just want to jump in and say that this episode is way up there in my favorites. It has humor, banter and a lot of heart. Cybill and Bruce are amazing. Cybill really delivers on this one and I just love Bruce as the priest bopping down the hall, when he is following Mr. Hayes and in the doorway. Great work. Aside = has anyone else ever wondered how David and Mr. Hayes suddenly have raincoats on??

Deliberate act. Maddie was wound and he needed to let her uncoil a bit. Plus, he didn't want to use this particular issue as a way to score points on the Luv-O-Meter. Cybill's portrayal in this scene is one of many in this episode that are some of the most genuine in the entire series.

Both. I think a lot of people, especially in their mid-thirties, still seek parental approval much like when they were younger. Only at this age, it has more to do with careers, raising children, etc.. Mr. Hayes was a very successful businessman and Maddie only wants to make him proud. I suppose she is nervous because she is anxious to show both Mom and Dad that even though she had to declare personal bankruptcy after a very successful modeling career, she has managed to start a new business and make it successful.
