4. When Maddie explains the situation to David, why does he jump to the conclusion that Mr. Hayes IS having an affair? Or does he? I don't think David jumps to that conclusion. All he knows is that Maddie's mom is upset about something. When Maddie finally opens up, I believe that David is saying "I'm sorry" regarding the situation--her mother and this supposition she's proposing. It's great when David asks, "Ok, you know your FATHER. But do you know your mother's husband?" It's another opportunity for David to showcase his intelligence, once again challenging Maddie to look at a situation from a different perspective.

Missing scenes...sorry for the delay:
This was omitted from the beginning, Maddie and David in her office:
DAVID: Maddie.......don't worry...I'm not going to embarrass you...
MADDIE: You leaving town?
DAVID (sliding off her desk): I'm leaving your office.
MADDIE(following him): That's a start.....
ON DAVID
....SEEING SOMETHING......stopping SUDDENLY...
DAVID: That's new....
...and he reaches out and grabs.....
THE PICTURE
...off the desk....
ANOTHER ANGLE
....as he STUDIES it for a MOMENT.......Maddie looking on anxiously over his shoulder....
DAVID: Ward and June, I presume.
MADDIE: Alexander and Virginia (and then) Alex and Ginia (and then) Al and Ginny.
DAVID: Hmmmm....I'd say Ward's got the look of someone who listened to E.F. Hutton. And June...she's a fine lookin' wuhmin. I can see where you got dem bones.
MADDIE: You're getting drool on the frame. (and then) Weren't you leaving?
DAVID: Gee...I got the feeling you wanted me to stay.
MADDIE (Taking the picture; turning him towards the door): That wasn't a feeling...it was a hallucination.
FOLLOWING THEM
....as they make their way towards the door....David in front....Maddie gently guiding him.....
DAVID: Yes....well....I'm coming out of it now.
MADDIE: My office or your hallucination?
DAVID (as they go through the door; over his shoulder): You're getting good at this...aren't you?
INT RECEPTION AREA
...as Maddie and David come through her office door......
MADDIE (as she walks): I don't suppose you brought another suit?
DAVID: Absolutely. It's at the court of appeals. My lawyer thinks we can sew it up there....
(turning to her)
DAVID: Go...."Bah-dump-bum"

One tiny omission, after David has met Maddie's parents.....
ON DAVID AND MR. HAYES
...as they TURN and walk off TOWARDS the sunset...or in this case, David's office....
MR HAYES: You see that......they think just cause they're prettier and smarter and better people than us they can tell us what to do.
ON MADDIE AND HER MOTHER
...standing there...watching the two men go........
MADDIE (after a moment; as much to fill the silence as anything else): Would you....like to see my office?

The next missing scene is between David and Mr. Hayes driving, and the scenes we see in the woman's hotel.
These take place in Beverly Hills.
MR. HAYES
....making his way down a downtown Beverly Hills sidewalk.....
ON A STREET CORNER
....as David makes his way AROUND IT.....his eyes GLUED TO....
ALEXANDER
...well in the LEAD.....David VISIBLE some distance BACK.....
ANOTHER ANGLE
....as Alexander STOPS in front of......
A RESTAURANT
....CHECKING his watch......GLANCING around......
ON DAVID
....as he QUICKLY JUMPS BACK into a SHOP DOORWAY.....
DAVID'S P.O.V.
.....as Alexander stands on the sidewalk.....attractive women exiting cabs and cars....making their way past him into this restaurant......
ON DAVID
....still standing behind the shop window....watching Mr. Hayes through the window glass......
VOICE (off camera): Can I help you?
DAVID (without turning back): I'm just looking.
VOICE: I can see that. Something I can help you with?
DAVID (his eyes still glued to the street): I'll tell you....I don't think you'd have my size.
VOICE: You'd be amazed.
...and David TURNS....to SEE....
THE SHOP WINDOW
....and in it are all kinds of FOUNDATION GARMENTS for OLDER WOMEN.....
ON DAVID.....
...suddenly realizing...and we can't help but notice the blush rising in his cheeks.....as he TURNS and LOOKS at......
DAVID: Ooooops.
THE SHOPKEEPER
....a BIG WOMAN....she could have been a piano teacher...she could have been a librarian......but instead she decided to sell women's foundation garments....
SHOPKEEPER (not amused): Ooops.
ANOTHER ANGLE
....as David SLOWLY MAKES HIS WAY out of the doorway...and looks down the street.....
DAVID'S P.O.V.
....Mr. Hayes is gone.....
ON DAVID
...as he hurries up the STREET....then stops and GLANCES in a RESTAURANT WINDOW.....searching for ALEXANDER...
ANOTHER ANGLE
....as the COUPLE eating by the WINDOW stop and GLARE at him....
ON DAVID
...as he flashes them an apologetic SMILE....then moves on to.....
ANOTHER WINDOW
....again peering in....
DAVID'S P.O.V.
...a GORGEOUS WOMAN sits alone.....spots SOMEONE...and SMILES....
ON DAVID
.....FROWNING......
DAVID: Don't do it, Mr. Hayes....
DAVID'S P.O.V.
...as a MIDDLE-AGED MAN...but not ALEXANDER...comes over to the WOMAN and sits down.....
ON DAVID
...relieved....and from SOMEWHERE unseen we hear the SOUND of someone rapping on GLASS.....and David LOOKS UP to SEE....
THE MAITRE D'
...on the other side of the glass.....SHOOING him away impatiently......
ANOTHER ANGLE
...as DAVID moves to the next WINDOW.....and PEERS IN....
DAVID'S P.O.V.
......ALEXANDER sitting at a TABLE by himself.....SUDDENLY SEEING SOMEONE.....and RISING.....
ON DAVID
....holding his breath.....
DAVID (to himself): Uh-oh. Zero hour.
DAVID'S P.O.V.
...as SUDDENLY the MAITRE D' reappears in his window...gesturing furiously for him to move on...
ON DAVID
....IGNORING HIM....trying to CRANE HIS NECK and finally seeing....
ALEXANDER
...greeting another MAN with a warm handshake and they both sit down together....
ON DAVID
.....SMILING to himself....and then sticking his tongue out at the ANGRY MAITRE D'
DAVID (turning from the restaurant): Alright, Mr. Hayes.....Alright......
The next scene continues back in the car, and arriving at the hotel......

so, as long as I am on a roll, guess I should answer my own questions:
1. The bumper at the beginning of the episode is, believe it or not, in the script -- although it is billed as "Special Opening" (This is an episode for which I have a very late script.....dated 2/14 for a 2/18 airing).
Soooooo....how did you like this opening?
I love this bumper.....it is such a total teaser for the fans.....and I am sure that Glenn and the writers loved yanking our chains.
I also like the MacMahon headband.....leave it to ML to get into the controversial current events of the day. Bruce's headband was one of many worn that day as a tribute to MacMahon, who made a set visit that day.
Everybody visited...and wanted to be on Moonlighting!

2. Why is Maddie so nervous? Does this say something about her relationship with her parents, or just generalize the relationships between parents and children?
I see both sides.....first I think it is a very typical reaction of a child to want to show their accomplishments to his/her parents.....
In Maddie's case, this was the first opportunity to show her parents her new career. Maddie took Blue Moon very seriously, and wanted the visit to go well.....to prove to her parents that she was doing well, in a business capacity.

3. What is your first impression about the relationship between Maddie and her parents, and specifically her father? Can you project forward to the season 4 episodes with them, and do those impressions hold true?
I think she has a very warm and loving relationship with her parents. I would think that they would have weekly phone calls and holiday visits, and all the things that parents and children can share when living in different cities.
I think they had a wonderful family life as Maddie grew, which continued into her adulthood.

4. When Maddie explains the situation to David, why does he jump to the conclusion that Mr. Hayes IS having an affair? Or does he?
I do believe that David's first gut response is that Maddie's father is having an affair. Whether it comes from his own family history (which we really don't know enough about), or his experiences with his men friends.....I think he would assume it was true. Once he listens to Maddie, not only does he consider the possibility that it might not be true....he roots for a happy ending, if only to make her happy!

5. There is great chemistry in the scene when David offers to be Maddie's detective....and then he breaks it by cracking wise about the photos. Was he just being David or did he changing the mood intentionally?
I adore this scene......David knows exactly what he is doing here......it was getting far too intense.....
And I love that Maddie says "You just couldn't let it be nice".....when the exact opposite is true....it's just too early for Maddie to see it!
