Ok...I got a chance to sneak some time in. I'll go back to Witness next.
I hadn't had a chance to watch this one in a long time....and I was surprised how much I liked it.
The script only has a few missing lines of dialogue that are not that memorable.....think they were censor cuts. There is one scene between David and Toby when they are discussing the "hit" on him that I will give you all later......BUT the big news is the ending of the script is totally different than what aired......a full 6 pages additional are in the script! How about we get the discussions going and I will try to add them tonight or tomorrow....with the anticipated 18 - 24 inches of snow, nobody's going anywhere around here!!!
Here are a few questions to start us out:
1. This is the next episode after "Witness". What do you think about the continuity from that episode to this? Could the argument in the office be spurred by a little residual feelings or backlash from the previous episode?
2. Maddie says" It did occur to me that you've never solved a case." How does that really make David feel?
3. Toby enters the office after Maddie has left. How would Maddie have handled the case had Toby given her the information?
4. There are significant conversations where Agnes is the sounding board for both David and Maddie. Is this the episode that definitively establishes Agnes as the series confidant?
5. How is David different than the David of previous episodes? Clearly he is doing this to prove himself to Maddie. Would his reaction have been the same before this?
6. What in your opinion makes the scene where Maddie apologizes to David so effective?
7. There are tons of 80s references and images in this episode. Got a favorite?
87. And my usual....in another episode of favorite lines.....what is your favorite?

I'm going first gang!! Gotta make it an early night tonight. Diane...you are such a tease with that script of yours!
1. This is the next episode after "Witness". What do you think about the continuity from that episode to this? Could the argument in the office be spurred by a little residual feelings or backlash from the previous episode?
I have been wondering if they put these two episodes back to back on purpose; almost as if the writers were very much aware of character growth and the growing relationship of Maddie and David. This sounds silly….but that thought is comforting considering where the writing took the show later.
I absolutely believe there are residual feelings from “Witness…”. Both are a little unsure or insecure as to where they stand in each other’s lives.
2. Maddie says" It did occur to me that you've never solved a case." How does that really make David feel?
David feels as if he is under appreciated and maybe even feels as though Maddie thinks he has no brains or wherewithal to be a detective. “She thinks I’m steeoowpid” is what I can hear him saying!

3. Toby enters the office after Maddie has left. How would Maddie have handled the case had Toby given her the information? Probably refer her to the LAPD! Anyone wish Maddie could have been a fly on the wall each time David visits Toby? 7. What in your opinion makes the scene where Maddie apologizes to David so effective? The lighting, for one, and the fact that she is very, very sincere in her apology. Also, the way David tries to keep her from apologizing. Before he wanted her to beg for forgiveness, not accepting the raise she was willing to give him, rub her nose in it, so to speak! But, I keep going back to “Witness…” where she was dying to have him back at Blue Moon and here she is willing to let him go. Sounds like love to me!

Maddies clothes strikes a chord with me and the 80’s. Love her jackets and dresses as well as the colors. Also, any of you ladies notice that her jewelry she is wearing is very much back in fashion?
The music at the nightclub, too! Gotta love it!
8. And my usual....in another episode of favorite lines.....what is your favorite?
David spinning in his chair singing Happy Anniversary Madelyn Hayes. Eat dirt and die. Sounds like something he would say to Richie!
“I’m not mad. I’m livid!” POW!! ;D
“I’m not down, as long as she’s happy.”

Awesome questions Diane! I am crazy here right now, got 2 crabby boys still up who need baths LOL I'll try to check in when done. We also are getting more snow but not as much as poor Diane. Maybe 4-8 inches.

4. There are significant conversations where Agnes is the sounding board for both David and Maddie. Is this the episode that definitively establishes Agnes as the series confidant? I suppose it is, though I can't help but think about later down the road when she tells David that the both of them have more holes in them than one of Bert's socks. (From the yuckie "Between a Yuk..." ) Dear sweet Agnes...we could have been BFF's!! ;D Sorry to hear about your travel woes Gray. Glad you are home safe now and that we have an avatar to look forward to!! Rose...sorry your boys are crabby.... ...you two need more Moonlighting!!

I didn't get that feeling. While it doesn't appear that Witness did NOT take place, I think this scene just recaps the entire program to this point.

2. Maddie says" It did occur to me that you've never solved a case." How does that really make David feel?
It was a kick to the, er, groinical region. David considers himself a real detective. Regardless of the method or the lack thereof, they have been somewhat successful in the past year. Maddie's statement there was quite sharp, and I felt, somewhat uncalled for. Of course, comments like this from Maddie float up from time to time, so perhaps she doesn't fully think them out before she fires away.

3. Toby enters the office after Maddie has left. How would Maddie have handled the case had Toby given her the information?
I agrees with the Bees there, but I'm unsure if Toby would have had the same forthcoming nature with Maddie. I mean, she pretty much knew it was her on the elevator, yet she didn't say anything to her, and continued to find David. That was odd to me as she was specifically looking for Maddie Hayes' agency, yet did not engage her. Hmm.

Umm, while she served an important purpose in this episode, primarily by allowing we viewers to find out what both Maddie and David were thinking, THROUGH Agnes...I'm not sure I can point to this particular episode as her being pivotal to keeping D&M rolling along. I think that came later when she got more "in your face" with them.

Hmm, by this question you are putting a lot of emphasis on Witness, where I, as mentioned, don't see it as a major factor here. But then again, I am a dolt.
Regardless, David has been trying to prove to Maddie that he is a true Dick...Private type, ever since they met. The anniversary scene is evidence that he thinks that he has checked that block, a belief that is shattered by the following salary dispute. Once again, Dave just doesn't understand that Maddie still looks at their (obviously complicated) relationship primarily as one of employer/employee, where Dave thinks it is more of a partnership...hopefully in more ways than one.
