Here's my ticket: In "Take My Wife" (Season 5), Maddie and David tell each other that each had the other one figured out from the get-go. Rewatching the Pilot, do think that is true? Why or why not?Nope.....I think they had inklings, but neither could understand at that time, the depth of their emotional connections, and the real true people they each were inside. Knowing what we know (the events of the next 4 years), how do you feel when you watch this very first episode?[/b] I know there are many people who have regret for how the series turned out, and sometimes let that regret eat away at what the series really is. I love Moonlighting. I adore the first three seasons as literally the best TV ever made. I appreciate season 4 for handling some difficult situations and still coming up with some pretty good episodes. I guess I tolerate season 5, and grab the little bright spots where they come. But it is what it is.....I don't want it redone or polished up with some crummy movie of the week where David and Maddie collect social security. I love it as it is...and I accept it.....quirks, flaws, faults.......

Let's Party like its 1985! LOL Ok here's my ticket question: What is your fave scene of the whole Pilot episode? HMMMMM Will we all pick the same one or different scenes? I'm gonna be in the minority......the bar scene is wonderful, but my favorite is in the office, when David plays Blue Moon on the harmonica, and Maddie's reaction to it.

Weeellll...no. I think David thinks he has Maddie pegged--icy, self-righteous, self-centered, and clueless about how life in the real world works. But she surprises him--laying him out in her kitchen, climbing up the side of a building, etc. By the end of the episode, I think he's intrigued--he wants her as a partner for her name and face, sure, but also because he wants to figure her out. As for Maddie, she quickly writes David off as a fast-talking good-time guy with no affinity for hard work (or detecting). But she is surprised in her turn--David is tenacious and creative in trying to solve the case, and he's able to keep them both safe from the goons, and he has an in with the police--surely an asset, right?

Here's a couple more Q's: 1. How do you think David and Maddie are characterized in this episode? 2. Do you think we're supposed to identify/root for one more than the other here? 3. In what ways is Moonlighting blazing, right out of the gate, with this episode? In what ways does it have room to improve? I think we were meant to see David as a fast talking, free willing, wise cracking son of a gun, but still able to see through all of that and know somewhere in there was a savy, smart, big-hearted, not to mention very charming man! MAddie, on the otherhand is written for us to feel like she really is a cold-hearted b****, yet we see something soften in her by the end of the Pilot. David's influence already? Maybe a little. I think she had just been handed a huge blow financially and emotionally and she covered up her feelings by being all business with David. Hmmmm....the first sign of her "A" game maybe..... Regardless, I agree with what diane said in that David was just a guy trying to keep his job and found something challenging in trying to get Maddie to change her mind about the agency and then eventually a challenge to him in his world of dating women in the 80's. And Maddie was somewhat intrigued herself. As far as rooting for one over the other, I think working women of the 80's totally identified with Maddie, but fell in love with David! HA!! Right out of the gate the dialogue is steaming hot, though even that improves. That opening scene with David bouncing the basketball..."You're looking a little pale today..." was so different for TV back then and made everyone sit up and listen to what this guy was saying! Improvement came with Bruce getting his groove on with David....and boy did he! Cybill was wonderful from the get go!

Hi Gray! Glad you're back! And very nice avatar, btw! ....Even started shopping for the Maddie colored jackets with shoulder pads, pumps....got my hair styled like hers...had it BAD! I was 25 years old and didn't really look seriously at what I would be doing 25 years later! HA! Can't believe we are here....right now....still talking about the show just like I did with friends and neighbors back then. Well.....maybe not exactly like back then....they were not "essed" friends!! ;D Bees, you just gave me a giggle......I had a tough time finding the polyester copies of Maddie's silks, but even with employee discount, my salary didn't cover the real thing. Also.......there was absolutely NO work ever done on Wednesday mornings.....we were too busy talking about last night's Moonlighting!

Knowing what we know (the events of the next 4 years), how do you feel when you watch this very first episode? A great nostalgic rush! The first thing I think when we see David with the orange basketball is--"Oh my God, he's so young! And look at that hair!" I agree that Bruce hadn't quite grown into the part yet, but he looks like he's having a heckuva good time and he's darned appealing. Cybill is gorgeous--I'm a big fan of the looser hairstyles (LOVE how she looks on the couch). She nails Maddie from "Listen, bub--wipe that high-school locker-room grin off your face..." The little moments between them that are so rich with possibility here do make me retrospectively sad, I guess, when I think how everything ended up. But they also make me believe that, whatever happened in Lunar Eclipse, these two belonged together. They're a great great team, not just for 66 TV episodes, but for all time.

I didn't have silks either, but did have my fair share of pastel suits with padded shoulders. I really get a hoot out of looking at old pictures.

Favorite scene? Well, it's a close one, between Maddie on the couch and the bar scene, but I think the dancing wins out...specifically, that little moment when David leans in and smells her hair. It's such an intimate gesture--makes me kinda swoony, every time! Oh, and the look on Maddie's face when she says "Do you really think I'm cold?" Oh, Maddie-girl, no way, no how...you just need to find the right one to turn on the heat!

Where were you on March 3, 1985? Not only physically but what was going on in your life?
What was your reaction to the pilot......and did you ever imagine that you would still be talking about this show 25 years later?
Let's see, I was working for the Army at a unit in North Philadelphia, at this point a First Lieutenant. I was living in a one bedroom apartment in southern Montgomery County. My rent was $350 a month, my electric bill was $35, my car payment for my 1984 Chevrolet Celebrity was $226.40 and dig this, my CABLE bill was TEN DOLLARS a MONTH! I was young, single, stupid and scraping by, but loving every single moment of it! As for the pilot, it was NOT the first episode I saw, that was the Next Stop Murder, but once I heard the line "Yes, I AM looking up your dress"...I knew this was a show for me! Here is me, circa 1985: (ah, I'm on the LEFT..no idea how to make it bigger) I love Gray's pic......gotta find an 80s pic.....but then I might scare you. My bills were probably fairly similar to Gray's....maybe even a bit less since he lived in the SUBURBS!!! The week after ML premiered, I went out and bought my first VCR.....paid $10 a month for what seemed like forever!

I never thought of that angle...I always thought it meant that you had enough mental sharpness to keep moving--so the flies couldn't land on you! ;D

Two questions for all those who have the script for this ep: Any significant differences from script to show? Anything "extra" in the stage directions or descriptions that add to our understanding of the characters?

When she disparages him, I think he then is challenged, and needs to prove himself to her. And I also think, he sees something in Maddie that makes him want to work to have her stick around. Totally agree, diane. Maddie challenges him more than anyone has (or will)--just look at his face when she calls him a "sissyfighter" (classic!!). She throws the gauntlet down again and again, and David just keeps on pickin' it up. And David spends the rest of the series trying to prove himself to her--professionally and personally. I think you can trace the roots of "Father Knows Last" and even some of the 5th season shows in his reactions to her here. An amazing point, Jen........he does spend the rest of the series that way!
