This just came to mind a while ago, but it's something I've wondered about for some time. When Virginia tells David that she and Alex talk all the time, it's just she's not always awake to hear it, he tells her a joke about the ventriloquist who talked in his sleep: his wife had to go in the next room to hear anything. My question is, "Huh?" I feel like a complete moron, but perhaps someone can 'splain it to me.

Has to do with the concept of a ventriloquist "throwing" his voice so it doesn't sound like it's coming from him. If the wife wanted to hear what he was saying in his sleep, she had to go into the next room.

And didn't you just love Virginia's reaction to the joke? I know I did.
