Oh, I definitely agree that Fillion is a cutie full of charm. But, Bruce? Well....sorry but Nathan loses that one! ;D
In contemplating how an 80's show could stand up in reruns now, I think about I Love Lucy and The Dick Van Dyke show. I watched these two when I was a teenager and they were already "old". But, I loved Laura and Rob Petrie (still do, actually) and the dynamic between them. And Lucy and Ricky, well they didn't show a whole lot of romance between them, but you knew Ricky loved Lucy, antics and all. I will still watch these shows when I come across them, albeit accidentally, but my 17yr. old will scroll the TV guide to find them sometimes. She'll occasionally make comments about hair styles and fashion and at times can get distracted by it, and she will laugh when Rob and Laura are shown sleeping in separate twin beds like Ricky and Lucy. But, she surprises me sometimes when she finds a life lesson or moral to the story in old shows like these, just when I thought she was only looking at Laura Petrie's slim, skinny legs.
I do agree that kids often look for instant gratification in TV, movies, games, or even technology. There are a lot of shows out there now that are geared for that, Glee, I think, being one of them lately, where the shock factor is there for the kids to devour. I do know that the teen aged sense of humor is VERY different from back in the day...something I have to remind my husband of often! But, just when I think the world has gone to the dark side with some of the shows that are out there lately and taken our kids with them the youngins' will surprise me. They do occasionally look for substance and value and can appreciate it.
Which brings me back to ML.....my kids know how obsessed I am with it! They have watched a few episodes, but not enough to really understand my obsession. They laugh at Maddie's hair and shoulder pads and roll there eyes at me when David says something funny...but they laugh, too! They are aware of the attraction and chemistry between them and can see why I love the show.
I don't think our show would be for everyone in this day and age (gasp!) and if it were on our TV every night there would be some that would flip the channel(gasp!). But, I think it would gather a following, young and old. Kids surprise me everyday...
