Hello I am new here so I really hope I'm not going to start with a question that's been asked loads of times before... I've been watching Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip (on DVD) and I am wondering if there is any significance in the fact that one of the lead characters has the name Harriet Hayes and they play in the Addison theatre? If so this would be really interesting because Moonlighting was doing the talking and walking down corridors thing a decade before Aaron Sorkin & Thomas Schlamme did it in the West Wing and then Sunset Strip. Has Sorkin ever cited Moonlighting as an influence? (I haven't seen anything to say that he has.) More specifically the character Harriet Hayes is a fundamentalist Christian whose main dramatic difficulties come about because of this (particularly in her romance with a non-believer.) I wondered if Sorkin might possibly have had an interest in Moonlighting and known that Cybill Shepherd said in her autobiography that she knew her character would be unpopular and unsympathetic for saying she didn't believe in God. If so it might be a subtle tribute from Sorkin to have, two decades later, a character with the same name who comes off unpopular and unsympathetic because she does believe in God? Should I go and lie down in a dark room because this is all the product of my fevered imagination? Does anybody have any thoughts?

Hi stayedinmostly,
I really don't know enough about Studio 60 to speak as an expert. What I resurrect from my brain is that I remember hearing that much of the show was very autobiographical for Aaron Sorkin, and that Harriet Hayes is a character inspired by Sorkin's real life former relationship with actress Kristin Chenowith.
Can't speculate other than that. I do know that as a long time Moonlighting fan, I marvel at the number of times I stumble across the names "Hayes" and Addison" in my daily life.

What an interesting post. When it comes to Moonlighting I don't believe in coincidences. You may very well have made a connection, although I know nothing about Studio 60. That would be interesting to hear from Sorkin about his views on Moonlighting.
(I'm still trying to get to the bottom of the coincidence of the Maddie Addison character who lives in Chicago in the novel Good Family by Terry Gamble.)
I have to end with this: you have come up with the BEST user name ever! Welcome!

I have to end with this: you have come up with the BEST user name ever! Welcome! Oooh I shall have to track down that novel! How could that be a coincidence? It's good to know I'm not the only person wondering about these things! Thanks for the welcome. The user name pretty much sums up what happened once I discovered Moonlighting: stayed in and watched it over and over again until some of the dialogue was so deeply embedded in my brain that it won't come out. I love it here, by the way. Where were you all when I was 18 and desperately trying to find 'Palookaville' on the map?

I have to agree with 1987 and say that your username is one of the great-greats. Once that embedded dialogue begins to emerge in your daily life--and if you're here long enough I'm certain it will--please visit the "Random, Everyday ML Things" thread under Member Talk (General Section) to share your stories.

Welcome stayedinmostly! Love your screen name...makes the mind whirl.... Not familiar with Studio 60, but I always think Moonlighting influenced many shows after it's run.
