I agree with all of your post, rose! I'm glad we knew, but I'm still mad to this day that David didn't know. I don't know why he couldn't just talk her into a simple blood test. He deserves to know for sure. I'm not an expert so correct me if I am wrong, but back in 1987, was it so easy as a simple blood test in utero? Sounds funny but my only frame of reference is all the people on soaps who got pregnant and didn't know who the father was seemed to have to wait until after the baby was born. I know that is not the cae now, but was it then? Dont know about before tests inutero too Diane back then but i meant after baby was born test should have been done, never in a show back then would it have been plausable to say lets get tested now before baby born especially if they couldnt do that back then too, but if i was David he should have said well lets find out for sure after babys born, would Maddie have said no?hmmm? But yeah for Maddie to assume its wasnt Davids from being off by most 2 days is kinda ridiculous! And maybe just a big mistake of the writers not knowing so many of us would be looking at time table going um 24-48 hours only between time she slept with 2 men? COuld have gone either way! and i m sure she didnt go 3 rounds with Sam like she did with David thier first night together It would have been better for story to say who know who father is and played it like that. But oh well........JMO

1987, I've spent way too much time thinking about this! You are not alone! I'm still to this day. Did he or didn't he? It's driving me nuts. If they couldn't have their own baby live, then I would be happy at least knowing that David KNEW he was the father.

Of course they knew later instinctively, if not positively, and David knew it all along, I'm sure. 1987, their remarks in the hospital could also have been due to the fact that both were at the point of having decided that they were to raise the kid together as theirs, no matter who the biological father was.

Yes Sandra i do agree with you on this point, i always have felt the same way it was just a given that David accepted to MAddies face he wasnt father but told her he would help her in everyway to raise the baby together. Even though deep down he believed the baby was his.

To determine the paternity of a fetus in utero it requires a CVS (chorionic villi sampling) testing or an amniocentesis. There are risks involved to the mother and fetus in both methods so performing them is not desirable. I'm not sure the CVS method was even available in 1987. I'm sure most paternity tests were done after the baby is born - and still are today. Having said that though, I seem to be the only one who has always thought that Maddie and David knew that he was the father. Their conversation in the hospital room at the end of WWAV always seemed to me like they had learned this after the miscarriage. His line "Me, a father." And hers, "You would have made a terrific father'" indicated to me that they had been told. It wasn't until I got on this board and saw so many people posting that it was such a shame that the audience knew but not them that I became really confused. I wondered what I had missed. I just assumed Maddie was wrong and it was determined through the size of a stillborn Baby Hayes that he was smaller and so it was David's. Maybe I just interpreted it differently. Maybe I have spent way too much time thinking about a topic so sad and one we shouldn't have had to analyze anyway. UGH just lost my post to this one! Ok lets see if i rmemeber what i wrote! I alwasy thought it was just a gievn thing the David was going to raise babys as his with Maddie cause he tells her he has obligation to her, he to Maddies face told her he would be a father even if inside he believed he really was ya know? I also wondered cause we know us fans think to much that would the Drs have given Maddie that information back then after baby died? Would they have told her baby was less along then they thoughy so it would have proved it was Davids with out a test because Sam was long gone by 2 weeks by then? It is sad subject we have to discuss no? but hey the show put it in here and i think it was wrong. After build of of baby they took easy way out and killed off baby i thonk cause they felt oh show got to serious lets get it back to comedy and you cant do that with a baby and then 1 episode later baby was forgotten. JMO But we are left to assume alot i guess. But i always beleive with my whole heart David knew it was his.

David's quite a guy, isn't he? Aww, the perfect man in my opinion. I hope one day I find a David!

Yes, I have spent way too much time thinking about this.
The key to the whole thing is what Maddie told the "lawn doctor" (can't remember his name).
And first diagnosis and determination about a due date would have been made using the information that Maddie provided. Now people run to the drugstore and get a pregnancy test -- then it wasn't so advanced.
I have always thought that Maddie lied...and I am not sure that I have changed my opinion. I just think I have become a little more understanding of the "lie". I think she gave the doctor partial information. Once the doctor gave her a due date....that became her truth....and a way to justify to herself that David wasn't the father. That worked for her, because it was the easiest way -- less fraught with emotional peril.
For me, that explains why she can't meet his eyes when she says, "It's not yours"...but also makes sense later, when she says she wishes the baby inside her was his.
Anyway, that's my story and I am sticking to it.

Interesting theory Diane, would explain a lot! But why do you think - if it is so - she lied to the doc (Dr. Hill, I believe) in the first place?

Again....the word "lie" may be relative.
This was the 80s.......pretty sure Maddie would have been a little embarassed to admit she had multiple sexual partners in such a short span of time.
I think she chose a date, and stuck with it. I think she was so confused during this time, everything was a bit murky for her.

Thanks Diane... yes, I can surely picture that. Embarrassed and confused were most likely two of the dominating feelings she had during this time...

Quite an intriguing discussion, folks. Since you all had the paternity issue covered, my earlier post had more to do with continuity: I just don't think Maddie slept with Sam and David on consecutive nights. Continuity problems, especially during the Sam arc, shuffled my brain deck. "Last time I checked my watch, it was 36 hours since I asked you what I asked you." Uhh, space man...we're on EARTH time here. Check it again.

How long do you think Sam was in town? How long do you think it was between David and Sam. I was under the impression Sam was in for only a few days.

Yes, definitely only a few days, I think. A week maybe, not more. Between Sam and David? I always thought like 48 hours. But no proof of that, of course.

I doubt that back in the 80's the medical technology was advanced enough to be able to determine the conception of a baby within 48 hours or even a week. I still think Sam was only in town for a few days. OK Let me make a timeline (my opinion) Blonde on Blonde - Sam was in town...day one (night actually) Sam and Dave - Maddie went out with Sam for dinner the next night (David crashed the dinner)...day 2(M and Sam have sex) Maddie's Turn to Cry: Sam asks her to marry him,. She sneaks out to David during the night..the whole bowling alley chase scene etc. (maybe 2 days tops...days 3 and 4) I'm Curious Maddie: David finds out that Sam asked Maddie to marry him..he wrecks the office Maddie and Ms. Dipesto go out for drinks .M goes home to Sam. (one day???) Maddie and David have Sex...correct me if I am wrong....all in all Sam is in town 5 days and it is maybe 3 days between that and sex with David)

Am I the only one who thinks that Maddie did sleep with Sam the night she sneaked out? Why am I so convinced? When Sam wakes up next morning and doesn't find Maddie - I mean he is in her bed and from the way he looks like one can say - obviously, they didn't read books in it.... What do you think?
