Great observations! One of the things that made fall for them as a couple was seeing David holding Maddie's hand from the very beginning. He reached out to hold her hand even when there was no need for that...and then it all went away, replaced by the closeness you described. Another thing that gave me comfort was that in their last scene together they were holding hands...I just love that.

Sure, it was nice they were holding hands in the end, but I kinda saw it as Bruce and Cybill, not Maddie and David -- problem was, somewhere along the line (after Maddie returned from Chicago) when Maddie and David touched there was no spark and I just didn't believe it anymore.
The screen used to smolder when the two of them were on it, then in later seasons they just stood side-by-side looking like...well, old....Pals. Yuk! Even during the kiss at the end of "Take My Wife For Example" there was no heat, they weren't feeling it, I wasn't feeling it, I just look at that kiss and think....STOP!
When it's obvious the actors aren't believing it, everyone stops believing it - and the magic is over...and sadly it was over...all over!
