So what did you all think of the introduction of the Viola charactor. Good move or bad? Did it add a new spark to the show? etc etc.

Probably because Viola does not arrive on the scene until the fourth episode of season 3....and since only seasons 1 & 2 have been released on DVD so far....many fans will probably wait to comment on Bert.
Bert is a fun character though. He starts out really shy and kinda nerdy...but as time goes on, he certainly comes out of his shell and becomes Mr. Talkative. Later, they can barely shut him up.
I do like him with Miss Dipesto. A really cute, quirkly couple.

I really like Bert! I didn't much care for the Bert and Agnes episodes, but I thought he was really funny. And I liked the way that Burt and Agnes' relationship mirrored Maddie and David's.

I think that the funniest moment he starred was in Maddie's office, telling her all about the mission he had the night before, nervous, moving left and right in a crazy way 'cos he had try stimulants (in spanish version he says he had taken anphetamines, dunno in the original version...) It's weird how world has changed from the 80's, huh?

I love the part in And The Flesh Was Made Word at the end when they have some time left over and they get Bert to sing. That's really funny and I always forget that bit is there.

At first, I resent his appearance on the show. After all, it's David and Maddie's show! He was perfect for a love interest for Agnes, though. After a while, he kind of grew on me. But, I still missed the heat between David and Maddie.

I didn't like Bert much when the show first aired, but now watching them again, I think he's a great partner for Agnes and a great foil for David... I think people equated him with the demise of the show years ago, but watching him and Agnes was one of the few reasons for me to watch season 5!! Curtis Armstrong is a great comic actor and added to the programme immeasurably..
Wow, two long words in one post!!

The same for me. When the showed first aired I didn`t like him at all. Agnes-and-Bert-scenes just were no-David-and-Maddie-scenes for me and that was what I wanted to see. But when I watch the DVDs now and my 15 year old video tapes from S4/S5 then I really like his character on the show. Agnes and Bert are a great couple and he is some real good support for David as long as Maddie is gone to Chicago.

I have always hated him (sorry to anyone that likes him)
When the show ended (and even now) I put the blame firmly on his shoulders! I was really surprised when I listened to the commentarys on the Season 3 DVD's and they were all raving about him!

When the show ended (and even now) I put the blame firmly on his shoulders! Without character development outside of David and Maddie, the show would have ended before it did. Armstrong is hilarious! If anything is to blame for ML ending after 5 seasons, it is Shepherd and Willis commitment to it, certainly not Armstrong's commitment.

I enjoy Herbert Viola in most every scene he is in. He is a marvel in the 4th season when he really had to step up to the plate and play the comic relief for the depressed David (and the fans, I might add).
I think he is hilarious in Sam and Dave and in Maddie's Turn to Cry when he gets excited he can go on the surveillance, during the surveillance and the morning after. I love him and those binoculars and tape recorder doing the surveillance....he manages to bridge the emotional gap between what is happening in the case and what is happening in David's head very nicely.
And in Cool Hand Dave when he spills the beans on the baby....he is just great there.
No one can deny Curtis's talent and professionalism. He was the guy to go to when things were strained both in the storyline and in the behind the scenes.

He was the guy to go to when things were strained both in the storyline and in the behind the scenes. I couldn`t agree more. Iv`e always enjoyed the Bert and Agnes scenes but in a different way to David and Maddie`s scenes. I suppose that we as the viewer tuned in expecting to see David and Maddie in anticipation of what was going to happen next in their relationship so when ever we had a Bert and Agnes episode maybe we felt a bit cheated. Allyce and Curtis were and still are great actors but in regards to professionalism we can`t really measure them with the same yard stick as Cybill and Bruce because it was obvious that Curtis and Allyce didn`t have no where near as many lines to learn as Bruce and Cybill so therefore wouldn`t have been under the same amount of pressure as them. I reckon though that if there had been a spinoff with Bert and Agnes it could have been very entertaining and i for one would have enjoyed watching them because having their own show we could have just had fun watching them two and kept our interests in David and Maddies goings on seperate. But...... having said all of that i do think that having David and Maddie to play off of made Bert and Agnes`s characters more fun to watch and i don`t think they woudv`e been quite the same without them. But hey that`s just my opp!

I love Bert Viola! He is definitely hil-ar-ious. He really 'saved' the fourth season for me. And one of his very best frantic frenetic scenes was in a generally hated episode in season 5 which will remain nameless. (Here's a hint. It's about a collision.)

I'm one of those who loves Bert, especially in Season 4. When he showed up in Season 3, no one had any idea how much he would be needed in Season 4, with Cybill being out of commission, so to speak. For me, certain scenes really stand out- telling David that he knocked up the boss, "quenching and wenching" with David in "A Tale in Two Cities", bringing David the beepers in "Take a Left at the Altar" - to name a few.
As much as I love and Agnes and Bert, I am not a fan of the Agnes and Bert episodes. For me, they were just a wasted opportunity to see more of David and Maddie. I particularly do not like when the writers have Agnes and Bert emulating the mannerisms or dialogue of David and Maddie. Example - Agnes and Bert arguing in Los Dos Dipestos, talking at the same time and even using "Good, Good, Fine, Fine" line. Grates on my nerves.
