I can't tell ya how much I luv this episode.... BUT.... this has been buggin' me for 20 years!! The scene right after Richard and Maddie dance....Davey and Richie are sitting together talking about her. David trying to act very cool - asking his big brother for $37,000. They are both staring at Maddie sitting across the room, at the bar, talking on the phone, and laughing. Ok, I know this was done for the plot. But it's always bugged me....who would she be on the phone with in the middle of the night from a bar! Did they call her, did she call them... Who is making her laugh like that?! She has no real friends. Who is this person?! Sorry, just my little rant. I'm not mad, I'm just oppressed, or obsessed, or one of those "s" words. HA! ~blue moon girl

We'll never know, we'll never know. I am guessing that it is some friend, like a college friend, or a relative, or something. Certainly no one exciting. Who knows, who knows.

hahaha. I always wondered that too. The only people you ever see her talking on the phone with really are David and her mother! Everyone knows she doens't really have any friends outside of work!

Yes it must be her mother or father... I remember how shocked I was to find out that she even had a friend when Sam turned up...
Can I come out from behind the sofa now? Steph and I are getting tired of hiding!!! ;-)

Ok everyone you can come out now.... Good call, Stephanie. Wouldn't it be funny, after Maddie got a few drinks in her, for her to call her cousin, and gloat that she was on a "date" with two men at once. Brothers no less....and when we see her laugh it's because Annie makes a bawdy comment. *teehee* ~blue moon girl P.S. I just love this scene...such angst! Gets me everytime.

I watched that episode when was started here in 2004(but I don't have it record it). I even say my option, now I just watch the pictures fom Stephanie, and I think Maddie was talking to her cousin Annie. I have no more ideas, since Maddie and her cousin are close to each other. How about you? Sakura_Star1

OK, wild guess here and could be wrong, but here goes: Agnes? Or, an old pal from her modeling days? I'm guessing just as much as anyone, but there's a chance. We don't get shown, in the course of the series, all that much about Maddie's background as far as friendships. By default we are left to infer that she is very reserved or even a 'loner' ("I'd bet you're in bed by 9:30 every night!"), but we don't know for sure that she 'has no friends.'' She does go on dates sometimes, as we see elsewhere. One of the things that bothered me a bit about the way her character was shown is precisely that it takes an awful long time for them to explain anything about who she is and what she's like. She may very well know somebody here and there she could call up. Who knows. Then again, it could have been a joke set up by her to gently kid the two guys and make fun of their conflict and jealousy. If it's a fake phone call, she could have been trying to get them to lighten up a little...or she was enjoying having their attention. A sense of people competing over you can be flattering!... Maybe she does know how to have a little fun, more than she's usually given credit for.

Why would anyone talk about something funny on the phone in a bar?! I thought calls made at a bar would be pretty important, not fun...
I have always assumed she was talking to her mother, though. Dave&Richie probably knew who it was, therefore it could not have been Sam (they would not be happy about that). Annie is a possibility. They sure seemed to have a lot of fun in the 5th season. These are just my thoughts.

Good point. I'd never voluntarily talk to my mum from a bar!

Me either Gem! Not a great idea... I like the idea of her calling Annie to tell her that she's out with two men. Thinking about it, Maddie did have another friend - in Money Talks, Maddie Walks, she realised the man who was about the jump out of the window was an old friend Charles, who knew her well enough to refer to her as "You know, Mad.."

You guys are a hoot! I don't think I have EVER watched this episode without blurting out..."who the hell is she talking to? She has no friends!!" I had actually never considered that she might have been a little worse for the liquor -- I would hate to admit to some of the phone calls I've made when I was in that state! I vote that she called the weather......and pretended to be having a goodtime talking to the monotone voice on the other end!
