When David leans in for a kiss (you all know what part I'm talking about)-- was Maddie being coy, or did she really not want David to kiss her? I guess this question leads to the larger question of: when did Maddie begin to be attracted to David?

oooh good question! I think that, knowing the character of Maddie, she is perhaps quite shy about it, and maybe wants to protect herself from doing anything with David. After winning money in the casino I guess she might think emotions are running a bit high (fuelled by alcohol? that thing has got SO much to answer for!) and she can't believe David has just travelled all that way to help her, so possibly doesn't want to feel overwhelmed by it all. Oh that's a long sentence, I need to work on my punctuation! As to when Maddie is first attracted to David, I don't know. I like to think she is attracted to him from their first meeting in the Pilot - she just doesn't know it yet. Knowing Maddie, she probably wouldn't like to admit to herself that she is attracted to someone like David. Oh it's all so confusing...

Oh yeah, she was definitely attracted to him from the start. You know she had feelings for him in "Brother, Can You Spare a Blonde?" because she was revving up to break it off with Richard, citing "David . . . " She knew that something was going on with him and her. The chemistry was there all along. She's just trying to be careful about it. And enjoying teasing (or tormenting) him a little, I think.

I definitely think she was attracted to him early on (how could you not be!), and it's obvious by the look on her face in this episode that she is letting him down gently rather than being annoyed or insulted that he even tried. She is warm and caring to him here, maybe letting her guard down more than usual, which later on angers her when the poker game goes wrong!
Maybe they should have got drunk together more often if this is the result!!!

I also think that Maddie was attracted to David fairly early on in the series ,i think it`s just that because they are business partners and she is his boss ,it wouldn`t be very professional to get get involved with someone you work with and Maddie is every bit the professional and even though her heart was saying go for it her head was saying no you can`t do this it wouldn`t be right ( just yet!) Also bare in mind how long they had been in business together at that particular point in time , she was still trying to get the agency off the ground. But hey thats just my opinion.

They definitely developed a attraction in the Pilot. But when Maddie stays in character she doesn´t throw herself into things. If they had kissed in this ep, it would not have felt natural to me, anyway. It was supposed to be worth waiting for. "Witness" is the right place!

I think in that scene she didn't want him to, that it was a little much and she thought he might be caught up in the moment, but she was a little surprised so she decided to be funny about it.
As for the other question, that's very interesting, I'll have to think about it.

What struck me is how naturally and easily David leans in for the kiss....I mean, it could have happened right there! Haven't seen this episode in a while and that left me a little breathless!! I also think that Maddie barely kept it platonic there, that she barely kept her head about her. The writers were brilliant, though, to take the focus off the one-step-forward in their relationship and to bring it "two-steps-back" with how the poker game ended with her furious at David! Just kept fanning the flames!

This is a favorite scene of mine! David so wanted to plant one on her at that moment.....just like him to bare his emotions and be so ready to show them and yet would never force the issue to protect the old ego!! Maddie on the other hand, as we all know, is attracted to him, but can resist at this point.
Did she want him to?.........sure she did!!
The whole essence of ML was to be teased every Tuesday night so you would come back for more!!

Funny, I never saw that as David leaning in for a , so much as just leaning in close. When he gets a little too close for Maddie, she puts her hand on the side of his face. But it's still accepting of his advance in a way because she could have pushed him on his chest, shoulder, etc. No, this was an intimate moment for them, she touches his face, he kisses her hand. All 3 moves are sexy as all hell imo. And, Maddie's been attracted to David since the pilot. That's one of the main reasons she agreed to run the agency with him!

I agree -- Maddie was attracted to David in the pilot -- I think she realizes it when they go back to the office at night, and he gets her the blanket, then goes into the other room, and starts playing that wonderful bluesy rendition of "Blue Moon" on his harmonica. The look on her face when it cuts back to her is so wonderful.

Methinks he is indeed leaning in for a kiss - just a teasing, a light one IMO, but a kiss. I've always seen it the same way, although I'm willing to concede that if the move WAS intended as a kiss, it would have been a simple-yet-speaks-volumes, return-the-favor-from-the-previous-episode sensual kiss on the cheek, back by her ear.
