I know what "Belched" means, but what does the title all together mean? What is its relation to the episode? Is there any cultural reference behind?

I think the title comes from a novel titled 'Atlas Shrugged.' But I have never actually understood the title here either. Hopefully someone else can explain.

Nope, never understood what it meant either.... I guess it meant something to Glenn Caron at least who may have known what the book was about..
Atlas was the bloke who held the world on his shoulder in mythology wasn't he? Maybe it's about earth-shaking changes or the earth moving?! :-)

maybe the rolodex stood for the world? David could call anyone with that thing.
(this is the episode with the rolodex right?)

I don't quite understand it either. But "belched" seems to me to express crudeness, rudeness, lack of tact or good taste, lack of decorum. I think there is a reason that this particular word was chosen.

"Why does he fight his battle, not against his enemies, but against those who need him most? Why does he fight his hardest battle against the woman he loves?"
Ok just found this is a thing on Atlas Shrugged about the main character, I'm sure i'm taking it all too literally but the battles with the woman he loves rings a bell....
Anyway, i'm pretty sure it's all a bit deeper and more profound than that, it's just that it might involve me using my brain and doing a degree-level analysis of a book when actually I'd rather be analysing another ML episode. Now which one shall I choose....?

Well, that's quite insightful. Thanks for doing that research babyhayes. I guess that's why they chose that book to base it on, how sweet. I still don't get the 'belched' reference though.

Nah me neither, haven't a clue really. Maybe we can borrow the rolodex and give GGC a ring?

My interpretation:
Atlas helded up the world, right? He kept it in balance, so to speak. Well, a belch is sort of like a hiccup... kind of. The world doesn't tumble completely when Atlas belches, but it does shake and get distorted for a while.
Well, David's world, as well as Maddie's, was shaken up when she sold the company. Everything they had known was about to change. But, in the end, they get the company back and the world goes back into balance. Atlas is still holding the world up.
Just my thoughts. I just watched the episode tonight. I'm re-watching Season 1 and 2. Next episode is the Christmas episode. Just in time, 'eh? ;D

I watched this episode just last night, and in Spanish the title was "the theft". Plain and simple.

That's interesting - I guess if we don't actually know what Atlas Belched means, it might be very difficult to translate! I'm still trying to think of intelligent suggestions as to what the title means but me and intelligence go together like oil and water.

Atlas Shugged is a book written by Ayn Rand, a famous believer in the philosophy of objectivism.
The title of her book comes from the following passage contained in the novel....
""Mr. Rearden," said Francisco, his voice solemnly calm, "if you saw Atlas, the giant who holds the world on his shoulders, if you saw that he stood, blood running down his chest, his knees buckling, his arms trembling but still trying to hold the world aloft with the last of this strength, and the greater his effort the heavier the world bore down on his shoulders – what would you tell him to do?"
"I … don't know. What … could he do? What would you tell him?"
"To shrug."
One of the major themes of the novel is the consequences if the persons (the main characters, but Atlas in the allegory) who provided all the world's support, decided to stop doing so.
I think that Maddie is the "Atlas" in Atlas Belched......and that her decision was almost like a belch, or a little hiccup. She decided to divest herself of the agency and all the people she felt she was supporting, but when she tried to do so, she realized that those very people were the ones supporting her.
It is a complex and very interesting novel......and I think Atlas Belched does the title proud. In my opinion, this is the most underrated Moonlighting episode, with lots more depth than it receives credit for.....and with some of the best chemistry scenes between the characters.
