Not expecting a big discussion but just thought I'd share something that bugs me. When Maddie finally goes fourth wall on us (usually it's just David) in the "flying fig" exchange, I think she should have done it alone. I think Dave's wink is superfluous. There. I've said it. The wink is superfluous! I feel better now. Thanks for listening. Now back to your regularly scheduled programming...

Is this the first time Maddie does the fourth wall thing then? Excellent. I rather liked the wink myself!!

I don't have a problem with David winking at the camera....but it does bother me that Maddie talks to the camera. Acknowledging the camera and that this is a show is David's job...not Maddie's. She is the straight forward, no-horseplay center of gravity of the show. I like her being the voice of reason and authority. David can be the cut up.

Yes, I do agree that it's odd when Maddie breaks the fourth wall... I watched Funeral for a Door Nail last night (on DVD!!!) and thought that the bit where Maddie looks into the camera and says "Say Goodnight, David"... Just seems odd and somehow wrong!

The fourth wall never was my favorite thing. They didn't overdo it too much, and they quickly moved past it, but I could take or leave it. However, they usually did it well (especially David), so it's okay. The first time they did it I remember being quite shocked.

I really liked the 4th wall things, I had never seen this sort of thing on tv before and thought it was so funny. They didn't do it too often and I think that was good, just sort of snuck them in on occasion. I agree it was a David thing, not so much for Maddie but I thought it still worked well with this one.

I was hoping this topic would come up.... I loved it when David broke the 4th wall with his little winks and comments. I also thought it was brilliant when Maddie did it in the "flying fig" scene. However, I do agree that in "Funeral for a Doornail" it seemed inappropriate. And I think they just wanted a cutsey way to end the show - but it didn't really fit. But, and please someone correct me if I'm wrong...the only other character to talk to the camera was Walter Bishop - Maddie's husband. When he walked out of the Blue Moon office, he turned around and said, "Ok, are you happy now?!" I loved that scene, because at the time, everyone was up in arms that Maddie would marry someone out of convenience. Fans were in an uproar, and they got what they wanted - bye bye Walter. ;D

I liked the breaking of the 4th wall anyway, and I don't mind if it's David or Maddie the one to break it. (After all, both talk to the audience in the teasers before some episodes). On the other hand, it's the first time I come across the expression "Flying fig", isn't it a bit artificial? Is she using that because TV censors wouldn't let her say what she reallly meant on prime time? English not being my mother tongue, I am afraid I don't get the joke completely.

There was no way that back in the '80s that someone could curse on broadcast television. (excluding cable and movies of course) At the time, it was a shock to hear someone say "b**ch". And anyways, it much classier for Maddie to say "flying fig" then the f-word. The scene would not be humorous at all, and especially would not have worked in the context of them looking at the camera.

Can somebody please explain the phrase 4th wall and also flying, as I`m not from an english speaking country. I`ve never heard these phrases befor. Thanks 'Fourth wall' is a reference to the front of the t.v. set or a movie screen, meaning that the cast when they 'break it' at some point directly address and/or look at the audience. 'I don't give a flying fig' generally means 'I don't care.' In this scene, 'flying fig' is also a joke as a euphemism for an expression it was considered unacceptable to say on American television. ;D
