I really do like this episode.
I was watching this morning, and I remembered Glenn Caron telling Cindy and I about Billy Joel approaching him about a song he had that he felt would be perfect for a Moonlighting episode. And how right he was -- when you listen to the words of the song, the mental picture it paints, at least for me is David, David, David!
I do have a small pet peeve about this episode though, and it really is picky. But how the heck did Maddie find the apartment where the after funeral get together was taking place? Addresses are rarely printed in obituaries, for fear the people will be robbed while attending the services. And do we really think Tess was using David's last name nine years later? And even if that were the case, do you know how many Addisons would be in the metropolitan New York phone books? And as we find out at the get together, Maddie didn't even know Tess's first name.
I know it is silly...but it's a puzzlement!

A bigger puzzlement to me is how she got in David's hotel room. I can just imagine the clerk at the front desk: "No, ma'am, out of concern for our guests privacy and security, you can't have the room next door unless Mr. Addison says it's okay, but why don't you go on ahead and wait in his room and you can ask him yourself?"

In the script I have...the first thing Maddie says when David comes in is: "Don't look at me like that. I paid a guy twenty bucks to get into this room..." (which is supposed to be a joke-according to the script) But we know how nervous she is, and if she allready had a conversation with the front desk clerk about the adjoining room - maybe he took pity on her and just let her in. And the whole issue of Maddie finding the apartment. Hmm...I had never thought of that before. In the script, during the "I was looking forward to this funeral" scene David says: "Funeral's at noon. Then there'll probably be something afterwards at somebody's house...I don't know". Ok...I found the answer in the script. Now I'm sure this is stretching reality here, but the scene that is omitted is this. It's 11pm...and she's been waiting all night (I'm leaving out the details of what she's been doing). She looks at the newspaper with the funeral announcement circled. She looks in the phone book and dials the phone. A woman answers, Maddie hesitates and hangs up. She looks at the clock again, grabs the paper and heads out the door. The obit was for Tess' brother Jimmy, and so it was obviously easier to find the name immediately in the phone book ( in tv land, of course) Now that was the scripted version, but in the final cut, she does make a phone call and a woman answers with "Addison residence." So....maybe the obit said it was for Jimmy (?), and then the gathering would be at ? Addison's house afterwards. Who knows....it's one of those, you know 'reality thingys' we're supposed to overlook. Oh, and one more thing...now that I'm really looking at the shots in the phone scene...Maddie has the phone book open to almost the middle of the book, and yet when she calls the woman answers with 'Addison residence'...Boy, there must be a lot of A's the NY phone book to find 'Addison' halfway through it. Ha! My bet is, they changed the ADR dialogue later to better suit the final version. But still is funny if you scrutinize the scene. Ok, I'm done with my crazy logic. We now return you to your regularly scheduled reality....

Hey you guys, I tried to watch this episode after having read your posts, I had to rewind it many many times to take it all in. I had always thought about why they couldn't give Maddie the room next door, but they could let her in to wait?? (It's never that easy when they're on a case, they have to use mr Stickpin or a credit card ) She probably used her softness and charm. ;D The phone book is so funny! i can't think of that many names that could fit in before Addison, but it could be that he had a lot of relatives in New York.. about half of all New Yorkers.

Me thinks I see a whole bunch of continuity and logic issues in this episode and its script.

Oh there are plenty of continuity issues throughout the series-- it could probably sustain a whole new topic-- perhaps entitled: "Huh? " But we weren't watching for continuity were we? And besides continuity doesn't equal greatness.

This is so true, Hazel. Continuity doesn't equal greatness. But it sure helps. I know I sure wasn't watching for the plot back then. Interesting how they omitted showing the clock at 11. I never would have thought the party would be going that long either. I always figured it was around 8 or 9 when Maddie showed up. I think we should start another thread called "Huh? " Great idea! ;D Now that I have more time to watch the eps again, I'll start keeping track. Keep those pencils sharpened kiddies....

Another "Huh?" moment for me in this episode occurs in the beginning when Maddie is chastising David for his irresponsible behavior. I don't remember his exact words, but it is something about being the first time in two years that he stayed out late, overslept, drank too much. etc. My instant reaction is "Huh?" What about The First Murder You Hear, Witness, The Son Also Rises and who knows how many other times we have seen him suffering the effects of his partying? What were the writers thinking?

It's probably best not to expect a water-tight plot for this episode! It's simply not about that!

I think Maddie picked the lock of David's room. Didn't David teach her how to do that in "The Next Murder You Hear" season 1?

Yes, I remember it clearly now. He did teach her and she used her new skill within that same episode and again here. Mystery solved methinks.

I finished rewatching this episode over an hour ago and I still find myself holding my breath and fighting back tears. To me, this episode defined David and Maddie's love for each other. As viewers, if we had any doubt about how they felt for each other or if they would end up together, it was gone by the end of this episode.
What's odd to me now is that it is clear that Maddie is chasing David and he is still unclear about how he feels. In fact the episode starts by giving you the impression that he's spent another wild, single night on the town...and in his bed. Yet, she follows him to NY and then is so drawn to him that she follows him to the wake. Meanwhile, he is referring to her as "another woman at my hotel. " Very interesting...
I must admit that watching this in my 40s as a married woman with five children has put an entirely different spin on everything for me. My "glasses" are different now than when I was in my late teens so I see things differently and catch different things. But the emotions, they are as deep and real for me as if I was watching this for the first time.
I've said it before and I'll say it again, David and Maddie were much more than characters on a screen; they were truly a part of me...and still are. David and Maddie were the only good love that came into my life during those years and I lived for Tuesday nights.
I thank God that he gave Glenn Caron the words, Bruce and Cybill the talent, and me the time to experience it all...over and over again. And, in my mind, whenever I need to get away from my reality, I imagine myself curled up in his arms, sleeping from one coast to the other.
