The last three episodes of this cycle are introduced by ‘newsmagazine’ segments that send up the long delay between new air dates and remind us of the plot developments.
“Sam and Dave”: “Like many of you, I was disappointed. No, make that fed up. No, on third thought, make that enraged…” (Jeff Jarvis, People magazine) If you do not fall off your chair laughing at this point, there may be something wrong with you. Jarvis recaps “the good parts” out of “Blonde on Blonde.”
“Maddie’s Turn to Cry” opens with the man-on-the-street interviews: “Did you watch Moonlighting last week?” “No, it was a repeat.” “No, I have a class on Tuesday night…” This sets up the fans’ summary of “Sam and Dave.”
“I Am Curious…Maddie”: It's a voice-over in the style of wartime newsreels. “While fans settled into easy chairs, hoping to see another new episode…” Cue stock footage of trains, escape artists, all sorts of weirdness going on. “With nothing else to do Tuesday nights, frustration mounts…”
The announcer gives us a recap of all the previous arc episodes, until even he can't take it. “Oh, hell, you can read the card.”
And that march music! ;D
I absolutely love these little intro bits. They whet your appetite even more. They show that the people behind the show had a good sense of humor about themselves, and it’s a warm response to the fan support. By the time the final installment of the story rolled around, it had almost driven you nuts.
Those of you who have never before seen Yr. 3 are in for a real treat. (16 days, two weeks from Tuesday!)
