This is the episode where we get to see Maddie's side of this romance triangle and the toll it is having on her emotionally. Up to this point, by not getting her side of the story in the trilogy, we really think that she wants to be with Sam. But boy does this episode open our eyes to what she is feeling and show us Maddie's dilemma. Do you go with the safe, rather conservative but very stable choice or do you take a chance and walk on the wild side and follow your passions?
This is a perfect enactment of every woman's romantic dilemma pick mr. perfect and have a nice, sane but fairly dull life or go for the bad boy and live life on the edge, but maybe to the fullest? It sure doesn't hurt that both men are good looking hunks either.
Poor Maddie! HA! We should all be so lucky!

One of the most telling things Maddie does in this episode is not only go over to Dave's place, but the fact that she does so after Sam has asked her to get married. Her feelings for David are such a strong pull that she will not immediately be able to answer what most people consider the most important question in your life. She's been stopped in her tracks. Although she is not able to bring herself to say this to David, it is just such a powerful implied statement. Even if Maddie herself is not ready to say it in so many words, actions speak louder. Look at the way she practically collapses on Dave's chest when she's crying. Rarely, if ever, has she actually shed tears in front of him, even though some of their fights are pretty darn rough. An adult is generally expected to simply not do these things in public, even if it's tempting. But in that scene where they're on the trunk, she does lose her cool for a minute; she doesn't seem to have a reason to hide, or she can't stop. This is that important. She almost says it, but does not say it: D: "You just left him there, didn't you?" M: "He's perfect for me. But you and me, we... we..." And when she says, "What are we going to do?", I think we all understand she's not just talking about the case. Although her general feelings for him have been suggested before, this is when we know they're about at the point of no return. It's her mirror image of Dave's crisis at the restaurant.

That scene with Dave and Maddie sat on the trunk, is one of the sweetest, most affectionate and the most real they get with each other. Neither is playing games, both admit that there is something between them and Maddie admits how upset she is. The kiss is warm and tender and we can almost believe that something wonderful is about to happen... Darn that running make up!
Can I also say how much I love David in his old t-shirt and sweat pants and mussed up hair? He looks gorgeous. Have I said that 10,000 times before? Oh ok! :-)

One of the things I found most charming about this scene is the fact that although David obviously wishes things would have, ah, turned out differently, he stops with the kiss. When she wanted to get up and leave, that was it. He was cool with her decision even though it was probably driving him crazy. ;D It's just so sweet. He even asks her--twice--if she wants him to get her something to eat. There is no jealousy and anger in this scene. He seems to put aside the tension of his problems with Sam in consideration of the fact that Maddie is going through a lot here. That must have taken some effort. He doesn't press the issue, in spite of that little joke which could be taken seriously or not; doesn't fight, doesn't really make fun of the other man or tell Maddie how bad he thinks the guy is. And he still won't tell her what he really meant to say at the dinner. (Wonder if he was afraid of scaring her off or making her angry.) Part of this could be taken as still being afraid to be honest. Another way to see it is that he's aware of the fact that there are other issues coming to the surface, even though Maddie is now the one keeping secret about one of them, and David is trying to save her from having one more thing to be knocked off her moorings about. An amazing moment, filmed in a very stark and simple setting but one which puts the focus clearly on the different natures of the two characters; it allows us to concentrate on what they have to say, and what happens between them, rather than anything else. There's plenty of time for the madcap things that come after. The scene here is understated, not a lot going on besides two people talking (and that ), and it makes that point even more powerful.

Speaking of starting to show your true feelings! I thought of something. It's been said that David is always overt with his feelings; he's constantly cracking jokes and so forth, always talking in one way or another about what's on his mind. (A hem.) Maddie is far more reserved, at least in the way she acts much of the time; she tends not to let her thoughts be as obvious, though we know they're in the background. There are a few instances where she lets her feelings sneak to the fore, as with her offhand remark, "Just when you think you found someone you can trust...he stomps on your aorta" (I'm paraphrasing) and her technically unnecessary but obviously emotionally motivated trip to New York to support Dave in "Big Man on Mulberry Street." It might possibly be taken that her flirtation with Richard in "Brother..." could have been her actually poking fun at Dave, trying to tweak his nose a little. It's a stretch but it could be there. Okay. Does anybody remember any instances of Maddie actually overtly, um, for lack of a better phrase, hitting on David? (In this case I'm referring primarily to the first three seasons. Years 4 and 5 are obviously another matter entirely. I mean before they finally admit how they feel about each other.) She's quite flabbergasted by the opening gambit in "Symphony"; you can see how happy she is when he gets to the house, and then when they get in the limo. I'm not sure that qualifies, though (it's really a response to what he did). That business in the opening of "Blonde on Blonde" might be seen as her trying to, perhaps even without realizing it herself, challenge him...Still, I was thinking more in terms of occasions when she clearly made the first move and it can't be mistaken for anything else. And none come to mind. Wonder if it could be so. Thanks. ;D (For technical purposes--let's not consider the very obvious example of the infamous case of 'mistaken identity' in "I Am Curious"! ;D It's not fair, she didn't know... )

I vividly remember watching this episode on a Saturday night along with one of my very dear and close friends that I had from early childhood. Re-watching that episode helps me to relieve that Saturday night with my friend that I have not seen for years now.
The scene where Maddie pays a late visit at David's home was hilarious. Maddie took the initiative and went to Dave to show him that she also card for him. Maddie clearly shows to David how much she feels for him. It is obvious that she has strong feelings for him. David is witnessing the fact that Maddie is appreciative of his presence in the last two years in her life.
Then Maddie goes and kind of makes a “but” statement. He is so perfect for me.
I do not know how David can say anything about it. I think he says something in terms of yes (mumbling it). He does not fight for her at that moment. Maybe because he feels that Maddie even though makes a reference about Sam, she is feeling closer to him; she is in his place late that night. Furthermore, they share a tender but brief kiss. Maddie loves David in her own way. David loves Maddie in his own way. The ‘I hate you” lines, they exchange are the most intimate and revealing phrases they say to each other.

Re-watching that episode helps me to relieve that Saturday night with my friend that I have not seen for years now. Hi Dave, I know exactly what you mean. This show brings me back in time. Everytime I watch a particular episode, it instantly takes me back to where I was when I first saw it. Like I am Curious Maddie. I was just about 10 years old ,and we had compnay over for my brother's 1st birthday. Yes, he was born on March 31st. That's how I remember his b-day party from that year. I'll never forget that day. Also, the B/W ep...my friend and I used to dress up and sing like Maddie I always think of that when I see Dream Sequence. Great memories indeed.
