Does Maddie own a dog? Does Sam? In the little moment after Sam and Maddie have the conversation about “See you later…work out the alimony later?...” Sam walks up to the door of Maddie’s house and lets himself in, and I swear to Crimony Pete either a dog or a weird-looking cat runs up and makes a noise. I am not kidding. Check from the 30:11-30:16 mark of the episode. (Not counting commercials.) I’ll swear on a stack of something pretty darn stackable that there’s a dog, which appears to run across the doorway, and Sam pets him. There’s a shadow of a dog’s tail or whatever that is as Sam is briefly seen walking in. Someone else please see this and tell me I’m not insane…not on this point, anyway… To my knowledge in the story, neither one of them had ever made reference to a dog before. Where the heck did that come from? Belonged to someone working on the set? They forgot to edit it out? It’s just really weird. I’m not kidding. Look. Also, I think there's a small error in the argument scene—the lamp is already on when David walks into the living room. It was dark when Maddie walked in, and I'm pretty sure neither one of them had been downstairs since! Unless David switches it on right as soon as he walks in the living room, before he turns around to yell at Maddie--and if he does this, it's so quick that I don't even see it. Sure made me scratch my head.

Never noticed it before, so I watched it last night.. You mean that there is something inside the house, right? To me, it could have been a dog or a cat, but it could also have been the light (street light, or from the car) that created the "tail" we see. I can´t see Sam petting the dog/cat/light, sorry.
And the lit lamp... there´s no time for David to switch it on, since we see him entering the living room. Unless there´s a switch for it above the stairs, but that would seem unlikely. It really was dark when Maddie entered. I´m scratching my head along with you...

Okay. ;D I still think I saw what I saw. While it could be a car passing by, I don't think we see anybody else going by on the street at about the same time. There are other houses on the street, but they're big homes, it's not an average residential street with apartments or something and a ton of people coming and going at any hour. Maddie sure isn't moving her car at that second, not until after that anyway. (Even though she is waiting right there and I think the lights are still on.) Plus--if Maddie's car is lined up along the curb, the headlights would be pointing away down the street, while the light I meant is in one place behind half the door. If someone were driving, the lights would be going sideways. I am pretty sure the white light or shape I saw came from behind the door, which would make it from something indoors. I got the impression because just as Sam walks into the foyer (we see him open the door and it closes behind him), there's a whitish light or figure moving across the inside of the doorway, and then some sort of a yipping sound, and I swear Sam appears to very quickly lean down the way you would to pet a dog that comes to the door to greet you. I have a dog, I'd know. The thing with the lamp really flummoxed me because you can see, from the strong impact of that brief little scene where Maddie looks all the way across the house to the empty living room which is bathed in blue light, that the director clearly wants you to know the room is empty[/i] and something very different is about to happen. The lamp is not on in that establishing shot. There's only the blue shade coming in through the window. It's the photo-negative image of the cute little breakfast scene Sam had staged that morning in his last little bout of hope before the day kind of went to heck in a handbasket. So when David is headed back toward the living room, you can already see that the lamp is on again before he's done walking into the room, even though neither of them had been back downstairs since between the time Maddie walked up and when the argument breaks out. I thought this was a smile-worthy but noticeable little continuity problem. Could be wrong, but I did try to check carefully and it seems jarring. I mean, they made such a point with the earlier blue light scene, and then before David even first crosses into the room, the lamp is somehow on. Heh heh... It'd be pretty odd if there were a timer and that's the moment it chose to switch on! ;D I think it's just a continuity skip.

Ok, I'm responding to this without having gone back to look at the ep, but...from experience, here's some possible explanations. The shadow was most likely a crew person. There have been instances where a crew member has cast a shadow or made a noise in a scene where it wasn't caught or just wasn't edited out. And they were rushing to get these eps. out - not that they weren't always doing that. So errors were made and left in the finished product. Sometimes on purpose for the viewer to catch. For instance, in this episode, and most definately in To Heiress Human, during the filming of the bedroom scenes, the whole crew turned out to watch. Just a tad crowded in and around Maddie's bedroom. And in the opening cuts of To Heiress Human, when Maddie wakes up, we see several angles where she is sitting in bed talking to him with the bedroom door in frame. In the first two angles we see shadows moving on the wall in the hallway. The next couple of cuts, the framing is cropped closer to not show the doorway. The lighting issue was most likely a continuity error on the part of the DP and possibly the script person who keeps extremely diligent notes on the script for each take. Like I mentioned, these particular eps. were done at lightning speed so there were bound to be mistakes like this - even for this show.

I have watched really carefully during the weekend And you´re right, it sure could have been a dog. I showed it to my sister, and she thought it was hilarious. She´s not as open for the possibility of a dog beeing there as I am.. We´re both sure that there was a light. We could not hear any sound except from the door closing. And he probably bends down to leave the keys on the table or the floor. But you´re right, he could be petting a dog. And the reflection in the door-window could be a dog´s tail. I love to look for mistakes, I think it makes the story more interesting to watch.

Tomorrow, I'm going to check it. Wonder if they've edited it out, or if it's still there.
21 hours! ;D

I checked. It's still there. The information mark on the DVD read 31:29-31:33 (guess the timing's a little different), and I even used the "zoom in" function. Didn't get any closer to figuring out the precise shape of the image, because the door panel is that blurry glass, but it's still there, along with the sound. Still looks like he's petting a dog to me. *** I looked at the lamp business, and it holds up. Here's the first shot, when Maddie walks in and looks across the room: And here's where Dave is walking into the living room, before he even gets there: ;D Found another continuity error, in David's fight with Sam, compared with later, when he talks about it at Maddie's house: Although it's hard to see Dave clearly in most of the fight with Sam standing in one side of the frame, at the end it appears that Dave's right shoulder goes into the wall first... But it's his left that he taps when he's talking about the 'pain pills.' Tried to get a .jpg (moving) of the door shadow, but it didn't come out so good. (shrug) Oh well.

If we're talking about mistakes, when Agnes and Maddie are at the bar, we see the barman put down their drinks and then when we cut to the next shot, he is shown putting Maddie's drink down again.

That's hilarious! Good find. Never noticed that one before. Just checked and it's true. First I thought maybe it's happy hour, you get two-for-one drinks...but no, only one glass per person is seen on the counter when the camera goes back to the original angle.
;D

Getting back to the dog issue... I just looked at the shot. When Sam opens the door, the 'thing' you see is a reflection of a low stage light from camera left reflecting in the bottom of the glass on the door. As Sam walks through the door - he barely walks in the door and closes it. His shadow is thrown on the opposite door by a high set light on camera right in the interior of the set. This makes it look like his shadow is bending down to the left when actually it is just being cast at an odd angle. Mystery solved

Wow I'm impressed! Also kind of disappointed. Well, at least it was something wrong (looks like something they should have trick-edited out of there), so I don't feel completely silly. Thanks.

Well...I have to look at stuff like this all day long...so I tend to pick up on things like that quicker. Glad to solve the dog mystery.
