It's cool isn't it!!! I'm so glad that Bruce said in that interview that he DID say 'he' loved Maddie in that scene, otherwise we could have missed it!!
It's pretty typical of David's insecurity that he would only admit to loving Maddie when they were in bed together and not before....

This is, of course what he had been struggling to say to her since the beginning of the saga, and most likely in fact ever since he knew her. How fitting that it completes David's longing to say the right words, which had caused him such pain since the beginning of Blonde on Blonde. If you remember the opening of the story, his actual words to her in the late-night office scene verge on the heart of the matter. Think of when he knelt in front of the couch and took her hand, and tells her things that are so momentous, I'm surprised she didn't stop and ask him more about what he meant. (In fact for a long time I thought it was rude of her not to do so, until it becomes apparent she's also in her own little world. That's a big part of why things get so difficult for both of them until the end of the arc.) He was so close he might have blurted the truth right there, if she hadn't gotten up and started her screed on repression.
Toward the end of the first of the four episodes, Joan tells him what he needs to say, but of course he is soon prevented from doing so. He spends the rest of the story cycle alternating between being so angry that he tries to cover up his feelings with something else, as in the fight at the office before she tells him to go on the surveillance trip, and very nearly having a chance to tell the truth again--as when Maddie stops at his place.
At last he gets it right.

I often wonder if the film of that scene exists without the music. I think that would be a perfect "extra" to include in a DVD set - to hear David actually say those words!

I'm sure it does, lin212. They wouldn't have shot it without micking him for sound, and the music would have been put over the original sound later. Someone has it, I'm sure of it!

I can't remeber that episode very good (but I KNOW that I've seen it !!!!), cause it's been years ago, since they have been aired in Germany (nearly) completly !!! (4 episodes have never been syncronisiced !!!!!!!), but I found a clip with that scene, and if I didn't read an interview with Bruce, where he swears that he said "I love you", I think I wouldn't have realised it, cause of Cyb's hand.... By the way: great forum !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

When exactly David says the words? To me it could be right before Maddie smiles to him, right?

Just before the last kiss before the freeze frame. It's easier to see on DVD but you still need to be watching as Maddie is sort of squishing David's face! It is when Maddie smiles at him!

Question for someone with a script (mine is tucked away in the garage at the moment). I cannot for the life of me remember if the "I love you" is scripted. Anyone?

I was so stunned when I read this thread yesterday, I couldn't wait to re-watch the episode! What a revelation! It's like seeing the episode for the first time! So wonderful! Mulberry wrote: It's cool isn't it!!! I'm so glad that Bruce said in that interview that he DID say 'he' loved Maddie in that scene, otherwise we could have missed it!! Can anyone tell me where I can find this interview? I'm dying to read it/hear it!

The interview was in US magazine, October 2, 1989, and you can link to Bruce's quote here: davidandmaddie.com/doit-cast.htm#USI know I have the whole article stowed away somewhere. If anybody wants the whole thing, I will see if I can pull it out and post it. PS......We may start a whole new conversation here, but I have always thought what he says is...... "I love you, Maddie".
