You're right fernando1972 this topic has been discussed elsewhere. If you go to the 'Rate this episode' section of The Lady in the Iron Mask you will find that it is not just in the Netherlands that people have been gipped out of having the right music for the chase scene in this episode. We're all mighty cheesed off about it as far as I can tell! You're right in the DVD release the orchestra seems to be playing music without any regard for what is happening on screen! Welcome to the boards. Look forward to reading some more of your posts.

I love the use of 2 opposing styles of music in Dream Sequence.
In Maddie's dream she sings 'Blue Moon' which is wistful and sweet and underscores her perspective where Rita was a good girl who was led astray by Zach. In Maddie's dream, Rita's husband, Jerry is a good man but ineffectual. David's character, Zach may be a wrong'un but he is a force to be reckoned with.
In contrast, in David's dream, Jerry is a brutish pig, Zach is more of a romantic and Rita is as hard boiled as they come. I love the way they had Cybill emulate Rita Hayworth through her song - I Told Ya I Loved Ya (Now Get Out!). I think the lyrics reflect the way Rita treats her men. She uses them and then discards them once their usefulness has passed.
Again an excellent use of music to further character development and heighten our awareness of people's thoughts and hidden agendas.

The Al Jarreau theme song "Moonlighting" gets to me every time I hear it. It's jazzy-blue and makes me think of quiet nighttime with a lot of activity and emotion going on underneath the peaceful cover of midnight and moonlight. The song is lush and dreamy and full of promise that David and Maddie who met by chance are actually destined to be but the path to that 'being' is a little narrow, a little bit of a challenge but all will be well in the end. I love this song! It is so...Moonlighting.

I so agree, jr. This song is so full of promise, but it also makes me sad - guess cause we know how the whole thing turned out. It was interesting to hear Cybill in her "Every Daughter's Father is a Virgin" commentary say that the theme song gets to her as well.

I love the Linda Ronstadt song Ooh, Baby, Baby used in "The Next Murder You Hear".
Very telling of what is to come in later episodes, but I think speaks tons as to David's realization of his feelings for Maddie:
I did you wrong My heart went out to play And in the game I lost you What a price to pay........
Mistakes, I've know I've made a few But I'm only human You've made mistakes too.......
I'm just about at The end of my rope But I can't stop trying I can't give up hope 'Cause I'll be here Someday I'll hold you near Whisper I still love you Until that day is here......

Have to agree Beesnbears (love the monicker!) this is a great song. It is of course a Motown classic and was originally done by Smokey Robinson. Is it actually Linda's version used in this ep?

Yes, Funky!!
And I think the reason they used Ronstadt's voice instead of Smokey's was because of aesthetic purposes, don't you think? I mean, Maddie at home nice and cozy, feeding her fish and in bed......before 9:30!!

I'm not sure why, but one of my most distinct memories of ML was the sequence where David sings "Do Wah Diddy Diddy" in "Gunfight" Over all these years, it's ALWAYS made me think of the show. (Possibly, it was my introduction to the song, and I just liked it...I don't know). But watching the DVDs, and noting how important all the music is, I got to thinking the lyrics are rather apt, considering things to come. (Even though it's a sort of silly song, that is.) But maybe I'm just overthinking it.
There she was just a-walkin' down the street, singin' "Do wah diddy diddy dum diddy do" Snappin' her fingers and shufflin' her feet, singin' "Do wah diddy diddy dum diddy do" She looked good (looked good), she looked fine (looked fine) She looked good, she looked fine and I nearly lost my mind
Before I knew it she was walkin' next to me, singin' "Do wah diddy diddy dum diddy do" Holdin' my hand just as natural as can be, singin' "Do wah diddy diddy dum diddy do" We walked on (walked on) to my door (my door) We walked on to my door, then we kissed a little more
Whoa-oh, I knew we was falling in love Yes I did, and so I told her all the things I'd been dreamin' of
Now we're together nearly every single day, singin' "Do wah diddy diddy dum diddy do" A-we're so happy and that's how we're gonna stay, singin' "Do wah diddy diddy dum diddy do" Well I'm hers (I'm hers), she's mine (she's mine) I'm hers, she's mine, wedding bells are gonna chime
Whoa-oh-oh-oh, oh yeah Do wah diddy diddy dum diddy do, we'll sing it Do wah diddy diddy dum diddy do, oh yeah, oh, oh yeah Do wah diddy diddy dum diddy do

Good point, suzy! Just wish the end of the song had been as prescient as the beginning....

The music choices in Moonlighting was magic in the making. It's what makes the show a classic whether it was David be-bopping or racing the BMW to Hendricks, Maddie daydreaming or getting down with "Nasty Boys", Clausen's piano interludes or Al Jarreau singing "Since I Fell" ......the first dance music....while David stands in the rain. Classic. Classiness.

Oh yeah -- for sure. I've never seen another show where the music was so important/integrated SO well. The rights must have cost a fortune, especially for the dvd release. I've read that a lot of shows either aren't on dvd b/c they can't get the rights, so they etither don't release them at all, or replaced everything with icky generic stuff. SO glad they didn't go down that path. (save for the one or two songs they changed.)

Another show where music was used brilliantly was The Sopranos. But I remember reading where the creator David Chase was influenced by Moonlighting's use of music I listen to my bootleg ML CDs all the time. So many Motown songs fit the David and Maddie love story perfectly.

This is driving me crazy: Can anyone tell me if David comes into Blue Moon singing the Lou Christie song "Lightning Strikes"? And if so, when or which episode? I know he comes in singing "Double Shot of My Baby Love" in "To Heiress Human", beating on top of Agnes's desk, floating on cloud 9 from...well, the night before... But what about "Lightning..."? It popped up on my iPod today and spurred me on! Here's the lyrics: Listen to me, baby, you gotta understand You're old enough to know the makings of a man Listen to me, baby, it's hard to settle down Am I asking too much for you to stick around Every boy wants a girl He can trust to the very end Baby, that's you Won't you wait but 'til then When I see lips beggin' to be kissed (stop) I can't stop (stop) I can't stop myself (Stop, stop) Lightning is striking again Lightning is striking again Nature's takin' over my one-track mind Believe it or not, you're in my heart all the time All the girls are sayin' that you'll end up a fool For the time being, baby, live by my rules When I settle down I want one baby on my mind Forgive and forget And I'll make up for all lost time If she's put together fine And she's readin' my mind (stop) I can't stop (stop) I can't stop myself (Stop, stop) Lightning is striking again Lightning is striking again And again and again and again [Instrumental Interlude] Lightning is striking again Lightning is striking again There's a chapel in the pines Waiting for us around the bend Picture in your mind Love forever, but 'til then If she gives me a sign That she wants to make time (stop) I can't stop (stop) I can't stop myself (Stop, stop) Lightning is striking again Lightning is striking again And again and again and again Lightning is striking again And again and again and again See... Told ya' I was going a leetle crazy on this! Help me ML friends!
