In response to Turbogrom's book, Steph this would have been its original title as Balzac wrote in French. My French is a little rusty but I think the title in English would be The Woman of Thirty (or something like that!)

I just started reading Wicked. It's really good so far! Love Gem I'd heard it gives a more sympathethic view of the Wicked Witch in "The Wizard of Oz". Is The Witch portrayed in a more "heroic" light in Wicked?

I FINALLY finished The Speed of Light! Well, not today, but a month or two ago (already) haha!
The new book of Simone v/d Vlugt is in the stores. Now I only need money to buy it. I just bought 5 books of The X-Files and started to read one which is even scarier than the episodes (probably my good imagination) And I started to read the Bible. Yeah, you read it right, the Bible. I was reading a book for my study in Theology (which you get when you study Journalism at a Christian College), I was so fascinated by the story on how God created the earth and let two people live on it etc etc that I asked my mom where she had her Bible. So now I'm reading it haha! Just because I want to know it from that point of view. I wasn't raised with a religion.

Stephanie, you most likely did read Ernest Hemingway's name here on this board. One of his more famous novels was "The Sun Also Rises". Of course, that is the name of the first episode of season three (with a slight spelling adjustment and therefore change of meaning) - The Son Also Rises. I just found out we have this book, The Sun Also Rises! I put down the Bible again. In fact, I never read a single bit of it after I wrote down here that I was reading it. Same counts for the X-Files books. Right now I'm reading 'Break no Bones' by Kathy Reichs. It's very different from the series based on it (Bones ) but it's still a good read. ;D

I have read "The Road" by Cormac McCarthy recently. I highly recommend it. It is a little gloomy at times, but it is beautifully written. It will be out as a movie this fall, I think.
Right now I am reading "Beach Music" by Pat Conroy. It is also a beautifully written piece of work and so far ranks up there as one of my all time favorites. I can't put it down!!

If you have not read Beach Music......run, don't walk to the closest bookstore and get it!! I know this site loves character development in story lines and this book has it! It is a very moving story about family, friendship, marriage and love. I am usually ready to pick up another book fairly quickly after finishing one, but Beach Music was so compelling for me that I can't focus on another book yet! Anyway, happy reading!

I am a huge fan of Pat Conroy's books. Beach Music is a wonderful narrative.
If you haven't read "The Prince of Tides"......even if you have seen the movie, try the book. And don't forget "The Great Santini".
Pat Conroy tells a story beautifully, and makes even the unpleasant subject matter enjoyable. His descriptions of the South.......well, they just defy description!
Jump in and read!!

I'm a big reader of the romance novels, I love the Harelquin/Silloutte series. It's a FUN escape from my busy life when i can get the chance to read them. Anyone else read them?

I have been on a Pat Conroy kick and on Diane's recommendation read Prince of Tides. It is a wonderful story. A few years after the movie came out I saw only a very short part of a very disturbing scene and I guess since then I have overlooked Conroy's work. He is really a great storyteller and writes beautifully. Now I am reading The Great Santini. It is also turning out to be a page turner as well! Beach Music though is still my favorite! Happy reading!

Glad you liked the suggestions.....Conroy is one of my favorite authors.
For those of you who expressed interest in some light romance, I will shamefully confess my addiction to anything by Debbie Macomber. Her books hang on the edge of Harlequin romances, with the kinda "Boy and girl meet and hate each other, grow attracted to each other, fight over a major/minor issue, break up and then get back together" plot in almost every book. She does write in groups or series, so it is fun to find her characters repeating in other stories. Her books are like guilty pleasures.......read them while eating Klondike caramel pretzel ice cream bars........hahaha!
I am currently waiting by the mailbox every day for Amazon to deliver "Shameless Exploitation in Pursuit of the Common Good: The Madcap Business Adventure by the Truly Oddest Couple " which is a story of Paul Newman and partner building the Newman's Own empire, and starting the "Hole in the Wall" camps. With all the sad news rumors around about his health, I wanted to read about this vital man and his major contributions outside the entertainment field. He is one of my favorites.

I started reading the Twilight series by Stephanie Meyers this week. It's really good so far. I got it from a friend after she read it (actually Julie who is writing the new ML fan fics). It is said to be for teens but i'm 38 and feel it's for adults too especially if you like the vampire thing , and me being a huge Buffy /Angel fan i figured i would enjoy it
