Inspired by Babyhayes comment that she was supporting England in the World Cup I had to respond with my own enthusiasm for the event. This is the first time since 1974 that Australia have even qualified and now we're through to the next round! It is so exciting! My commiserations to anyone on these boards whose team has already been eliminated (Sweden and the USA were knocked out most recently). I am envious of anyone who is in the northern hemisphere as we are getting the games at an ungodly hour here in Oz -try 1:00a.m.
If Australia get knocked out I will be supporting the hosts - Germany (sorry Babyhayes!) My husband on the other hand is going for Portugal, you'll be happy to know Sakura.

What great thread, if only it had come up before yesterday (Sweden lost, and lost good, against Germany about 16 hours ago). Of course I'm supporting England now, since the coach is Swedish!

Well England are still going... Personally I don't like football/soccer but you have to support your country

We beat Equador 1-0 yeah!. Now on to the quarter-finals. I must admit i am not a football fan by a long shot but there is such a frenzy over here in the UK at the moment that you can`t help but be drawn into it. :)Plus i have a husband and 2 sons that are footie mad!.

I am SO with you Sakura - SO pleased the Dutch are out. Arjen Robben is a cheat, a diver, a whinger...ooooh i could go on and on!! I also don't mind England losing to the Portuguese (lets face it, we haven't looked inspiring so I fear the end is in sight ) Thanks for this thread Funkycat - I am supporting Oz too as they have the wonderful Harry Kewell and I think it would do football the world of good down this end of the world. Who else do I like? oooh Spain!! Xabi Alonso and Luis Garcia - lovely! Just watching the Portugal v Holland match at the moment - lots of fights and red cards, drama!! Looking forward to Germany v Argentina as it means one team I dislike will be out. Oh my month of bliss, World Cup, Wimbledon, my birthday all accompanied by the occasional Moonlighting episode!

Ok I agree with you about Robben, I hate him, but I thought those pics where cool even if Robben is in it. Totally supporting Australia right now, cuz they have Guus Hiddink as coach

I'm watching almost every game that's on these days. And I'm really sorry about Australia.. :(I rooted for the underdogs down under. That was just lucky for Italy. At the very last minute/second. I do NOT like Germany! And the people running around on the field throwing red and yellow cards around them to anyone playing against Germany, because they don't wanna offend the host country (I don't know which language I'm writing in, I'm just upset ).
