I don't think that David waited a month to ask her. It was only about 24 hours after they first slept together.

My perspective comes from David being absolutely in love with Maddie. I'm not saying that he would have deliberately tried to make Maddie pregnant, but I don't think he would have gone out of his way to make sure that DIDN'T happen. With his other, well, encounters, I am sure he did everything he thought necessary to prevent any unintended consequences, either from a pregnancy standpoint or catching some unwanted diseases. With Maddie, however, dear old Dave pretty much knew her like a book, as much as anyone else who spent that much time together. Therefore I think he felt pretty confident that she didn't have any medical issues.
So it comes down to protection. I think it would have been reasonable to Dave to think that Maddie was covered in that area, or she would have at least mentioned it. In Dave's mind the outcome of a baby wasn't really all that terrible of an option. I think he already decided that Maddie was the one for him and if their trysts created one, well, that's OK too.
This post rambled and I'm sorry. It is tough for me to explain this and not make Dave out to be a bad guy, but I don't think he was.

I know this posy is old but I had to chime in. I totally agree that David probably wasn't thag concerned about pregnancy. In Heiress I think he was asking her more out of courtesy that actual alarm for actually impregnating her.

Also, I think the writers deliberately put this out there in order to set up for her pregnancy the next season. They were laying the groundwork, so to speak.
