This is episode I hate the most because I think it is stupid. David is totally bipolar, character wise. Sort of ruins fives years of hard work by the writers.
David was always maddie's protector, confindant ect. In the bedroom speech when she says that they had been "enemies", I don't think that was true until this episode. David doesn't hate her but i think he hates what has come of them. I also think he BLAMES HIMSELF more than he does MAttie. His actions with Annie are out of frustration not malice. (IMHO of course)
THe writers had so many chances to write the wrongs. Maybe after the cops storm trooper MAddies house David could have come around and realized that no matter how hard he tries he still cares about her welfare. He's been hurting her. He's sorry. Although also out of character for David to appologize for anything. I would have been okay with "en light of your house being blown up, maybe Annie should cut her visit short and head home to her husband." Just something to show he still has a shred of compassion left for this woman and that he still had some grey matter left in his skull.
I am not sure

I always wondered about her speech too in his bedroom about them being enemies. You are probably right, at that point maybe i would say enemies but before Annie? I think that it wasn't really enemies just not being happy with the other person and what that person did to other person. There is hate for what has become of them up to that point like you said. Hate of each other? When good ole A**ie enters picture , it seems David hates Maddie all of a sudden. I also hated end of EKNM when after Maddie's house is destryoyed , David leaves her! UGH! They could have had that story wrapped up differently. He shoudln't have left her. I always felt bad Maddie was thrown out of her house in a way and alone in a hotel and David didnt care. Ah these are great discussions!

IMO, David did not know what the hell he was doing............ he reacted to yet again another rejection from Maddie on the dance floor and her little lecture at her house about behaving. Did he ever really misbehave with her at anytime? The poor guy keeps putting himself out there and keeps getting his heart stomped on!! While I am disappointed in his actions because I think it is totally out of character for him, I am really saddened that the writers were so "bipolarish" with there relationship the entire S5. Why would Maddie have said no to David's last offer of going out more and hitting the dance floor? When in just 2 or 3 episodes earlier we see her thanking David for the string of pearls with a kiss on her desk, an almost kiss in PFL and David stating she is drop dead gorgeous inside and out. And in Shirts and Skins she makes him a partner with what seems like a very suspicious written agreement to the terms after which he throws a wrench in the sexual harassment case and is concerned that Maddie thinks of him in the same light. Maddie says something like so and so was coming on to someone who did not want them too......... David did not know what the hell he was doing because the writers didn't know what the hell they were doing!!! OK, can anyone tell I just finished S5 and have once again become one of those "essed" people twice and three times over?!?!?! It's time for S6 again on Virtual Moonlighting............whew, thanks for letting me vent!! Oh, and as far as who was more deperate.......DUH, that would be the writers!!

Hi, Ifm new here. First of all, I really appreciate this board. Itfs been always helpful and enjoyment to read for me. Thank you for all your insightful analyses. Ifm not sure if this thread is the right place for my following thought, please let me know if I was wrong.
I watched Season 5th last week, It was the first time since the original aired. Itfs painful to watch, almost horrible. However, I wondered how David's mind had worked through the last three episodes? He throughout said this was nothing to do with Maddie at all. They looked awfully hated each other. But I got this impression that as often as he was irritated by argument with Maddie, he became more and more involved with Annie as if she was a painkiller. He even showed Annie his anger at Maddie though he denied it. And one thing I thought this was important was he looked sad and disturbed when Annie talked to him about Maddie twice (in the car, in his apartment). In each scene it was only for a moment but I felt that was the expression of his complicatedly layered deep feelings toward Maddie and he looked so painful. I came to think he was not over with Maddie yet. He couldn't deal with it because he instinctively knew Maddie still loved him, so did he, and he also knew their fights meant "the only two people at war in this menage" as Annie pointed it out. He went to Maddie's house to give her the file of Anselmo case, I don't know what he actually went there for, just seeing how Maddie was or talking with her if possible? But Maddie rejected him strongly, mocking him "Desperate women do desperate things". It must have sounded to him that she was giving up on him. He was shocked at her then left, he might have sensed a little that he was crossing over the line. But David didn't change his mind, he needed to be with Annie at that point. Driving home helplessly, he happened to know Maddie's life was in danger. He convinced her and protected her. He said to her he was glad she was okay giving a kiss on her cheek. Is this just the restoration of partnership? I don't know, but I saw in his face clear contentment and constancy that was different from his spoony smile to Annie. He meaningfully looked into her eyes, that I think he realized he could never let Maddie go. David continued living with Annie innocently. (I think this scene was too much! Not necessary.) He was not ready to be with her for life. When her husband came to the town and she got serious about leaving her husband, David quickly broke up with Annie. When she left his apartment, he looked sad. Annie got back to her husband, seeing them he looked sad again. Ifm afraid but I come to think that the last trilogy was about David in his short sentimental story, not Maddie. She was treated like an outsider, an unfeeling, careless old woman. But we know it was not true. On the other hand Annie was portrayed as an innocent babe. What an unfair mistake! This always depresses me so much. If the storyline could have developed Anniefs opportunism (surely David didnft like it) and especially M&Dfs emotional interaction, the things would have been different. At the same time I felt David would never shine in his uncaring attitude toward Maddie, it was totally out of character for him. Therefore I think that Moonlighting series shouldn't have finished at that point in time. Fortunately we have Virtual Moonlighting! I agree with beesnbears, I am really thankful to the writers too, theyfve given us the real David and Maddie and such great great episodes, that all I wanted to see more on the television.

Hi Marple! I enjoyed reading your post. It's been a long time since I got up the nerve to watch season 5, full episodes at least. I know it will just anger me again If only the writers of virtual ML could have been in charge of season 5 ;D Anyway just wanted to say welcome to the boards Marple!

Hi ryangie97! Thank you for the warm response and welcome!
I think I should have greeted everyone on the Member Talk thread first, sorry about that. In my country Season 5 DVD was finally released about 10 days ago. I jumped at it and then I got crushed again. Unfortunately there is no one around me to talk about it. So I appreciate this board, but if I made someone uncomfortable by my post, I apologize. I became the ML obsession again last April. And I think if I hadn't found this site, I couldn't have had tons of fun about Moonlighting.
And ryangie97, I always enjoy your Music Videos. They are terrific! Thanks, again.

I didn't have anyone around to talk about ML with either, so I know what you mean Marple. I was so excited to find this board when I did. Thanks for the compliment on my vids. Glad you enjoy them

It's a shame that the writers of series 5 couldn't have revealed their plans for the way it should have ended before it got cancelled. Then we could all have some closure - instead of that dreadful excuse of an episode LE. I still find it so disappointing watching this finale. :-(

Hello! U=I'm also new. Just signed up but I've been reading these amazing posts for a while now. Such an awesome site! Watched the whole series last month. Was invited over here by another one of your members. Remember when David tried to teach Maddie to be more spontaneous? We all know what happen there (Walter). I'm really confused too about David. I can see where some would say that he was desperate but whatever it was I think he took a page out of the Maddie Hayes book. Where David taught Maddie to be more spontaneous Maddie taught David to be more vindictive. After 5 years together a little bit of each other is bound to rub off. I so want to blame the writers too and that this was so not an in character David but if we don't blame the writers one could say these two try to show up the other with characteristics they think the other displays but take it way out of proportion. Who is the desperate one? I think you could say they're both desperate. Just in their own individual ways. David going completely coo coo and doesn't know what he's doing and Maddie trying to play it cool but on the inside she's screaming. Also, though I've never experienced loosing a child I'm sure it takes a long time to get over such pain. David should have read books about that subject like he did with the baby books and maybe he would've been there for Maddie. Season 5 could be seen as how to NOT deal with the loss of a child.

YAY! davemaycare, you found us!!!!!!!! *jumps happily* You're going to love it here - we are ton's of fun! Great thoughts on the subject btw... I absolutely agree about Season 5. I never understood why the loss of the baby was completely 'ignored' by all. Not only by our duo, but by the writers at the first place. Both were desperate. And both were in desperate need of each other...
