...was when Maddie finally came back from Chicago after he had been waiting for almost 5 months and preparing to be a father to the baby whether it was his or not. Bruce played that scene wonderfully portraying David's almost manic dark humor blazing out all over the place. It's a chilling scene but I love it. I've never seen so much anger and hurt from him before in my opinion - not even when he would break things. What do you think?

You are right MAJR. I remember when I first saw that scene how I kept telling myself he is going to go nuts when he leaves Maddie's office. It was a really sad, scary, and emotionally raw scene that was played very well.
But, I think the most emotion shown by Addison was in 2 scenes. First, where he totally trashes his office, hockey stick and all.......and we did not actually see it, but we were shown the aftermath through Maddie's eyes. Second, when he totals the BMW with Jimmy Hendricks blaring on the radio.
Good stuff from Bruce, imo!
I also have to add that there were times when David was completely silent, but VERY intense. Like in MTTC (I think) where he finds out from Sam's visit that he asked Maddie to marry him. Maddie tries to get him to "Speak now...." It is still a hard scene to take in......20 years later!!

Another scene that I overlook (because I am not really fond of the episode) is in All Creatures Great and Not So Great........David is really intensely angry with Maddie (and with the priest) and intensely communicates his feelings on the morality lapses in the whole situation. Bruce does a good job of some snarly, kind of over the top anger. He would have scared me!
I've spent a little time rewatching season 3 recently, so I may be contributing some random new thoughts.......amazing after twenty plus years, huh? What a show!

How about in "The Murder's in the Mail" when Agnes and David are talking about the bank accounts and David snaps at Agnes. He was pretty angry then. But, I really like Agnes' speech the next time she talked to him. She really let David have it! That scene is so wonderful.

genmaximus110, I think that episode was "Brother, Can You Spare A Blonde?" And it was a great scene.

Well, as much as I hate to refer to anything in Season 5 (since in my mind it didn't happen), I think he was pretty raw, furious and helpless in Between A Yuk and a Hard Place. He clearly scared Maddie as he was destructing the musak version of "You Must Have Been A Beautiful Baby" in the elevator. He killed me in Take A Left At the Alter too. I could really feel his hurt and anguish. Unfortunately, Bruce has not had the opportunity to explore this type of complex acting since Season 4. I am not so sure he could outsisde the David Addison character.

Unfortunately, Bruce has not had the opportunity to explore this type of complex acting since Season 4. I am not so sure he could outsisde the David Addison character. Bruce hasn't played a character like David Addison, period! Maybe glimpses of that persona in a few films since ML. However, I do think he has played a huge variety of complex characters since the show ended. To name a few: Emmitt Smith "In Country" James Urbanski "Mortal Thoughts" James Cole "Twelve Monkeys" The Jackal "The Jackal" Malcolm Crowe "Sixth Sense" Col. McNamara "Hart's War" Butch "Pulp Fiction" Sonny Truelove "Alpha Dog" Would I like to see him play another David Addison type? Yep. But, I certainly think he is capable of complex characters outside of David Addison. I'd really like to see him sink his teeth into something compelling sometime soon. Not that I haven't enjoyed his last few films. ...and I will be the first to admit that, in my eyes, the man can do no wrong!! ;D

Yes he has done some fantastic work. I think my expectations are really high for him because of the emotions he evoked in Moonlighting. My favorite work he has done on the big screen was Sixth Sense, Nobody's Fool and Unbreakable. It's interesting to me that the critics are always pretty hard on him with his movie work but he always got wonderful reviews as David. I would love to see him win an Oscar, he's perfectly capable.

I would love to see him win an Oscar, he's perfectly capable. I'd love to see him win an Oscar as well! It is strange, that he doesn't have one. He is a huge talent and deserves it more than some of those who won it. I personally would give him and Cybill an Oscar for their Maddie and David parts. Has the world ever seen a pair more sizzling, hot and funny than this one?! Nope.

I think "The Tracks of My Tears" episode is Bruce's greatest performance and that is saying something on a show where he gave many great performances. First, he practically runs the gamut of emotions in that final scene which is great in itself. But then when Maddie finallly drops the big bomb on him, he is nothing short of brilliant. What a tightrope he has to walk, playing David's pretense that Maddie's marriage is just a big joke to him, while at same time revealing the anger and pain he can't really conceal. My favorite part is when he mentions what an "action-packed" few days it must have been that led up to the marriage. After all those months trying to be patient and then this. It's as if just thinking about his Maddie in another man's bed pushes him right to the edge. He smiles, still trying madly to be jocular David, but his eyes reveal how he is seething inside. It's a bit scary because he looks deranged at that point. This is David's blackest moment--not smashing the BMW in the garage or destroying his office in "Curious". He was more frustrated with himself and his own inability to take control. But here I think he is so enraged with HER -- a bit scary!

Oh, I agree notuagain!! Bruce is fabulous in that whole episode! There are many other instances where his work is terrific and several scenes in this ep takes the cake! He scares me, too.....but it's a good scared!

He got upset quite a lot, didn't he? It's funny, because when anyone mentions "David Addison", I always think of the limbo-type scenes, the man who finds a joke even when tied up and threatened with an imminent face barbecue. But there are scenes of him losing it in bathrooms ('Brother...' and 'The Son Also Rises'), trashing his office (okay, that was off-screen, but it still counts), that famous scene where he trashes the BMW, through to his tearful confession to Maddie in 'Witness...', which I remember being quite taken aback by when I saw it the first time around. He brooded a lot more than I remember too. S4 was one prolonged brood and I don't think he ever came back from it. The bitter and nasty David of S5 seems pretty inevitable now, although that's not what any of us wanted to see. The strange thing is that I think we got to know Maddie more as time went by, but with David, I think the reverse is true.

Would you mind joining us on moonlightingstrangers.com to delve into this further? We started a discussion topic there, where I think these kind of ponderings would fit beautifully.

I think I signed up for that about a month ago, Sandra, but I haven't been on there yet, other than to take a look around. I'll check that out, thanks.
