Ok....my other observations....some silly, maybe....... Bruce is really very good in this episode.. The observation about his face aging when he sees Gillian is spot on. In fact, there are several shots in this episode in which Bruce looks a heck of a lot like he does today...over 20 years later. I have thought the same thing. Some of his mannerisms that I noticed this time around are still with him. It's those green eyes......that's what it is!! ;D

8. I'm projecting forward into the show’s future for this question: Gillian’s treatment of David was quite awful. Why does she not evoke the fan emotion…dare I say, hatred….that Annie does? Oh boy.....I am going to be unpopular for this one. I feel that Gillian is by far the more evil villain. She deliberately sought David out to use him for her own ulterior motives, and hurt him in the process.I can see your point. I have never really considered Annie evil.....I guess because her character was almost a "had to be". Yes, she was unfeeling towards Maddie, but I think that the fact that David's full intent to use her as a way to get back and Maddie, and perhaps to wake her the hell up has to be considered. Honestly, in my opinion, David is the villain in the "Annie" arc. OK.....I can take it...get your slings and arrows ready! Annie is evil, the betrayal is deafening! I would have knocked my cousin's teeth down her throat for doing what Annie did. That whole situation was too casual for me, like it's an everyday occurrence. David was wrong, no doubt... but as a viewer of all he had undergone; there was a bit of understanding for him because he was acting out of confusion and pain. For Annie to have grown up with Maddie, Annie should have known that David was a "hands off!" situation. (Daggon writers!)

7. The rose…. Should he have or should he not have left it? Why didn’t he?
Of course he should have....but that would have eliminated a whole lot of "is he is or is he ain't"
As much as I would have loved to have seen it, I think it was the right move for both the writers and David. This whole issue with Gillian had to be a traumatizing experience....one which you just don't get over real quickly.
There are two things about this I adore....one, that David smiles so sweetly as he is writing/saying the word "love". And secondly, the expression on his face as he crumbles the note, picks up the rose and departs......I bet he was saying.."I AM an idiot" to himself. diane I have been thinking about this more today while out and about. I don't think the timing was really right at this point in the show for David to have left a note admitting basically that he was snowed over by Gillian and signing it with "Love D". He did tell her he was sorry at the end of the chase, although short and sweet. But, if he were to have left that note, even without the rose, it would have shown a little piece of him that he is not ready to show MAddie. The cool thing is----WE get to see it!!! The writers did it to us again, didn't they!!?? One thing I like in regards to the smile on his face at the end is that, as Diane said, his experience with Gillian, both earlier and at the present time, was not a very pleasant one and yet he bounces back like it has not effected him. I think this experience plays an important part into his character growth and is partially to blame for the reason he can't leave the rose on Maddie's desk or lay his cards on the table about his true feelings for Maddie later on in the series. There is that fear factor of being hurt again.

OK, kids, my work day is over and it's time to get down to the business at hand - ACT TWO.
ACT Two begins with Maddie coming into the office and David asking her to visit Harlan Armstrong. We get to the following exchange:
DAVID: They're separated. According to Gillian...the guy's not taking it too well...
MADDIE (dubious): So you think he took the locket?
DAVID (a shrug): He might have. What I do know is...he's leaning on her. Having her watched. Harrassing her. I figure...one of us dropping by will let the worm know he's being watched. Get him to back off a bit. Give the lady some room.
MADDIE (pointed): She the only one looking for some room?
ON DAVID ...the meaning of that not lost on him...stopping...stealing a look to Maddie...
ON MADDIE ...realizing that was the wrong thing to say...avoiding his gaze...
MADDIE (pulling herself out of her chair): Sorry, Listen...why don't you visit the worm yourself? ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The scene with Maddie in Harlan's office is longer. It actually shows Maddie arriving at his office, walking up to his secretary and asking her if it would be possible to see Mr. Harlan. It continues:
SECRETARY: Do you have an appointment?
MADDIE: It's about his wife.
ON THE SECRETARY ...now she looks up...Maddie having said the right thing...
SECRETARY: Let me check with Mr. Armstrong.
ANOTHER ANGLE
...as Maddie stands there...and the secretary moves to her boss's door...and just before going in...turns back to Maddie...
SECRETARY: Excuse me, but didn't you used to be somebody?
ON MADDIE ...a small smile...
MADDIE: No. I've always been somebody.
INT. HARLAN ARMSTRONG'S OFFICE
...as Maddie comes through the door...even more impressive than the lobby... -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
In the hospital scene where David is telling Maddie about the incident on the terrace, the railing giving way, five stories up, "if I hadn't been there...(a shrug)...Now today her belly gets a hosing with a Hoover. I see a pattern".
What's with the Hoover? ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The scene in the park - Gillian is not in a convertible. The dialogue is the same, but the stage directions are very interesting. Diane alluded to this earlier:
On GILLIAN ...as she turns to go...and from out of the frame...
DAVID ...takes her wrist and pulls her back to him...
ON THE TWO OF THEM ...just standing there...
DAVID (simply; damn near a whisper): C'mere...
ON GILLIAN ...as slowly...her head falls to his shoulder...
ON DAVID ...his arms still at his sides...feeling her head pressing to his shoulder...
ANOTHER ANGLE ...to reveal the two of them...bathes in the light of David's high beams...not dancing...just standing there...her head on his shoulder...no other parts of their bodies touching...the only sound...the sound of the music...and slowly...we watch as his... ARMS...come up to her sides...achingly slow...measured...and even in the night and the darkness...we can make out the hint of tremble in his hands...as slowly...they find their way to her waist...
ANOTHER ANGLE ...and despite how quickly the music races...the two of them move slowly...achingly slow...as though this were their first dance ever...
ON GILLIAN ...her hands still at her sides...and we can't help but make out the tears...beginning to make their way down her face...as slowly her arms rise as well...
ON DAVID ...feeling her holding him...
ON GILLIAN ...suddenly sensing something..and slowly looking up...
GILLIAN (half to herself; a whisper): Harlan...
ON DAVID ...lost in a dream somewhere...
DAVID (only half consciously):Huh?
ANOTHER ANGLE ...and as the music continues...Gillian moving back from David...wiping her eyes with the back of her arm...and...
GILLIAN (pointing off): That's Harlan's car...
The scene then continues as we see it. So, as diane said, there is no kiss in the script, just a pretty intense interlude between David and Gillian.
That wraps up ACT Two. What do you think?

Thanks for posting the script, Lin!! I like that office scene where Maddie makes that comment about a room. Kinda shows she was jealous at that point instead of later at the hospital or the police station.
And the park scene is so descriptive!! David is completely lost...poor guy! LOL!!

The other part of the script you posted really describes more of how he felt about her. Obviously he really liked her! Did he love her? Possibly. When you put the script information together and the way Bruce played it in what we see.....I think David was a smitten man!
But, I don't think his feelings for her have the same depth of passion that he develops for Maddie

Thanks for all the anniversary wishes gang, so for a VERY limited time, I threw in a serious avatar.
Linda and I around the time of Moonlighting...taken in one of those tiny booths at that mall. The photo makes her hair look reddish, but it is pretty much the same color as Maddie's.
Yup, me and my own blondie blonde married 20 years ago today (1 April).
Scary thing is she doesn't look a day older. Me on the other hand....well you folks see my avatars week in and week out.
Again, thanks! See you in about 10 days!

ACT THREE begins at the police station. The dialogue is the same except for a few short lines. I think that the description of Gillian as she comes out of the interrogation room is different from how she appears in the episode:
...and there stands...all the way at the other end of the hall...eyes swollen...make-up running...Gillian...clearly just having stepped from a room off the hall. And she just stands there...
I don't remember that she looked that way - eyes swollen, make-up running. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Here is where an entire scene was deleted. Parts of it may seem kinda familiar. The scene picks up the next day when David never shows up to work. Maddie tries calling with no success. Agnes comes into Maddie's office and tells her it's 6:03 and that eveyone has gone home. Then we have Agnes' "guess so", "guess not" responses to Maddie.
ON MADDIE ...rising from her desk...clearly disturbed...but working like hell not to let it show...
MADDIE: Well...
DIPESTO (suddenly): You want to get wrecked?
MADDIE: Excuse me?
DIPESTO: Bombed? Pickled? Polluted?
ON MADDIE ...clearly baffled by this offer...
ON MS. DIPESTO
...an explanation...
DIPESTO: I couldn't help but notice that you didn't seem quite yourself today...
ON MADDIE ...just looking at her...
ON DIPESTO ...with a shrug...
DIPESTO: All the boy detectives do it.
ON MADDIE ...as she considers that...and we...
SHOCK CUT TO: A BAR
...long and sleek...a bullpen for people waiting to have power lunches and power dinners. And in the distance...we can just make out the door to this restaurant opening and...
CLOSER ON MADDIE AND DIPESTO ...as they step inside...
DIPESTO (looking around): Wow...
MADDIE (filled with second thoughts): Ms. Dipesto...this is not me.
DIPESTO: Too fancy?
MADDIE: I don't do this. I don't come to bars. I don't drink away my problems. The truth is...I don't know how to get bombed. I don't know how to get pickled. I don't know how to get wrecked.
DIPESTO: But Miss Hayes...it's easy!
MADDIE: You sound like you've done this before.
DIPESTO (pleased): I do? (and then) I haven't. (and then) But there's a first time for everything... (on another subject) ...at least I hope there is... (and then) Let's just give it a try.
ON MADDIE ...dubious...
ON DIPESTO ..."please" written all over her face...
ANOTHER ANGLE ...as Maddie sighs a sigh of resignation...and the two women make their way to... THE BAR ...as the two of them sit down...
DIPESTO: Trust me, Miss Hayes...there's no better cure for the blues than an evening at the neighborhood bar...
MADDIE (filled with suspicion): If you say so.
DIPESTO: I say so. Believe me...I've thought of everything.
MADDIE: Everything?
DIPESTO: Everything. (and then) I reserved a taxi to take us home...(and then digging into her purse)...Breath mints to mask the embarrassment of over-indulgence...(and then) Quarters for the juke box...
MADDIE (kind of impressed): Not bad, Agnes.
DIPESTO (pleasedwith herself): I've always been an excellent planner.
MADDIE: Really...
DIPESTO (a shrug): Y'know what my favorite thing in the world is?
MADDIE: What?
DIPESTO: Cleaning out drawers. (nodding; and then; realizing) I don't think I've ever admitted that to anyone else before. Must be the alcohol.
MADDIE: We haven't had anything to drink yet.
DIPESTO: Really? (and then looking down at the bar; it's true; there's nothing there) Wow. This is going to be one helluva night.
ANOTHER ANGLE
...as a bartender makes his way over...
BARTENDER: Ladies...something I can get for you?
DIPESTO: What's good if you want to get polluted?
BARTENDER: Wrap your lips around an exhaust pipe and suck wind.
ON DIPESTO ...that wasn't the answer she was expecting...
DIPESTO (simply): Oh...
ANOTHER ANGLE ...as Maddie turns to the bartender...
MADDIE: My friend and I will each have a glass of white wine. Hold the humor...
ON THE BARTENDER
...a polite smile...the meaning of this not lost on him...
ON MADDIE AND DIPESTO ...as the two of them sit there...
DIPESTO: White wine, huh? I don't know if that has quite the octane we need to really get to the root of what's depressing you.
MADDIE: Agnes,...I don't need a stiff drink to lift my depression. Y'know what lifts my depression? The thought of you...getting a taxi for us...buying breath mints...filling your change purse with quarters. You did all that because you thought I was depressed?
DIPESTO: I didn't think you were depressed. I knew you were depressed.
MADDIE (intrigued): Oh yeah? How?
DIPESTO: Well...Mr. Addison not coming in...Mr. Addison not calling...Mr. Addison spending all that time with that Gillian woman...
ANOTHER ANGLE ...as the bartender returns with two glasses of wine...and as he sets Maddie's down in front of her...
MADDIE (never taking her eyes off Dipesto; just as the bartender sets the drink down): Take this back and bring me a bourbon. Straight up. Water back. (to Dipesto) What makes you think any of that matters to me?
ON DIPESTO ...realizing she may have said too much...
DIPESTO: Well... (never taking her eyes off Maddie; to the bartender): Make that two.
ANOTHER ANGLE ...as the bartender takes away the two glasses of white wine...
MADDIE: There are entire days I forget there is a David Addison...
DIPESTO (nodding): Of course. I believe that.
...and from out of frame...the bartender returns...placing two rocks glasses with bourbon in front of Dipesto and two rocks glasses of water in front of Maddie...
BARTENDER (as he steps away): Ladies...
MADDIE (paying him no mind; looking; picking up one of the waters and belting it back): I don't like to brag...but you are looking at someone who has never...ever...had a problem with men. Any men. Ever.
ON DIPESTO ...and having just seen Maddie do it...she picks up a rocks glass of bourbon...and belts it back...
DIPESTO (wiping her lips): Not ever?
ON MADDIE ...shaking her head...
MADDIE: Not ever. And I certainly don't have a problem with David Addison.
ANOTHER ANGLE
...as Maddie takes the second glass of water and belts it back too...
DIPESTO (impressed with what she's just heard) Wow.
MADDIE (finishing her drink; slapping the bar with her glass; to the bartender) Another please.
DIPESTO (slamming back the other bourbon; and then): Make that two!
MADDIE (suddenly): That's a lie.
DIPESTO (the booze starting to kick in): It is?
...and from out of frame...the bartender steps in...and sets down two more waters in front of Maddie...and two more bourbons in front of Dipesto...
MADDIE (without thinking; picking up a water and starting to sip it; half to herself): The "men" part...not the "David" part. (and then) People think just because you're beautiful...
DIPESTO (picking up one of the bourbons; starting to sip it): It's true. I always thought that.
MADDIE: People don't understand how depressing it is. Men always at your beck and call. Men always heeling on command. Who wants that?
DIPESTO: Who wants that?
MADDIE: You look like this...and men...men change. They stop being themselves.
DIPESTO: I hate that.
MADDIE (a long pull on her drink; and then): And then along comes someone who stands when you say "sit"...who rolls over when you say "stand"..and you can't help but... (searching for the right word) ...wonder...
DIPESTO (suddenly looking off): I wonder how they get the room to spin?
MADDIE (quickly): Not that I ever expect someone like that to come along...
DIPESTO (no longer among us): Y'know what I once dreamed?...
MADDIE: ...people like that never come into my life...
DIPESTO: I met this guy...
MADDIE: ...and when they do...
DIPESTO: ...with this really long tongue...
MADDIE: ...things happen...
DIPESTO: ...who could breathe through his ears...
MADDIE:...and they don't stick around long.
DIPESTO: I never understood what that dream meant.
MADDIE: Maybe that's the price you pay for being so pretty. (and then suddenly) Agnes...I think I want to go home.
...and with that she bangs back the last glass of water...
DIPESTO (realizing what is going on): Oh...
...and with that she reaches over and bangs back the last glass of bourbon...
MADDIE (after a moment; filled with melancholy):Well...
DIPESTO (a moment of her own): Well...
...and Maddie pushes herself off of her barstool...turns and starts for the door...and Dipesto pushes herself off of her barstool...and promptly crashes to the floor and out of frame...and as an oblivious Maddie continues out of the bar...we....
SHOCK CUT TO: A PAIR OF ELEVATOR DOORS
...as they open...and a pair of beautiful legs in beautiful shoes step out...and make their way down...
INT. THE CORRIDOR
...as Maddie heads towards...
INT. BLUE MOON DETECTIVE AGENCY
...as Maddie comes through the door...closing it behind her...and as she does...we hear...
VOICE (filled with pain): AAAAHHHHHH!
...and Maddie turns to discover...Dipesto wearing sunglasses and cotton in her ears and an ice pack on the top of her head...which she now holds in her hands as though her skull was going to break in two...
ANOTHER ANGLE
...as Maddie tip toes over to Ms. Dipesto...
MADDIE: Morning, Ms. Dipesto...
DIPESTO (barely able to speak; pulling off her sunglasses to reveal bloodshot eyes): Morning...
MADDIE: Agnes...your eyes! They look awful!
DIPESTO: You oughta see them from my side. (and then) Guess who's in today?
MADDIE (not understanding the question): Guess who's what!
DIPESTO: Mr. Addison!
ON MADDIE ...caught by surprise...
MADDIE: Oh (and then quickly recovering; grabbing her purse off the counter; starting for her office): Really? Today payday?
ANOTHER ANGLE
...as she turns and starts towards...
MADDIE (to Dipesto): He's in his office?
DIPESTO: Yes, Miss Hayes...
MADDIE: Wipe that smirk off your face...
DIPESTO: Yes, Miss Hayes...
INT. DAVID'S OFFICE -----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The script then goes into the overlapping dialogue as Maddie walks into the office. Would you like to have seen the "missing" scene?

I love the Maddie/Agnes girl talk!! We kinda saw this in IAC, right?
DIPESTO (no longer among us): Y'know what I once dreamed?...
LMAO!!! ;D
I would have loved to have seen all of this, but it seems they were making decisions based on the status or progress of David and Maddie's relationship. They don't want to blow the "is he/she ain't he/she thing...making us wait!!

Lin, thanks so much for taking the time to do this! Wow--that omitted scene--obviously, they used the beginning of it for IACM...but the rest is pretty revealing. In fact, I'd hazard a guess that that's why it wasn't used: it gives a little too much away about Maddie's feelings for David, too early on. I actually like the subtlety of the episode the way it is, although seeing Agnes with her quarters and breath mints would've been a hoot! I agree, bees. Between Gillian and Tess, the man's been through the wringer, and it's really no wonder that he's not in a hurry to reveal his feelings for Maddie, especially when she is so cagey about her own. And on that note, with reference to the scene Lin posted: the other element that I would have liked to see discussed somewhere in Season 2 is the reference to Maddie's romantic past. We get quite a bit of information about David's experiences in this ep and "Big Man," but almost nothing about Maddie's until the advent of Sam. It would've been nice to know how her previous relationships impacted her treatment of David; it might have even made some of the S4 choices more plausible.

Hey everyone, I have just spent a very interesting 1/2 hour reading through your posts - excellent observations and great insights with the extra bits of script that were not used. Four little points I would like to make - re: the bar scene with Agnes and Maddie. Obviously the first part is recycled in IACM, just thought I'd share with you that the comment Agnes makes about her dream with a guy with a long tongue - that line is given to Whoopi Goldberg in the Camille episode and I still don't know how it got past the censors at the time! Point 2 - love everyone's comments re the scene when David and G meet up in the park. That scene has my all time favourite song "This Old Heart of Mine" (see elsewhere on this forum ) There is a very appropriate line in it 'Always with half a kiss, you remind me of what I miss. Though I try to control myself, like a fool I start grinning cause my head starts spinning'. Very accurate description of what is happening on screen IMHO. Third - Given that Maddie taking over City of Angels detective agency and changing the name to Blue Moon would have made the papers (see The Pilot), I am 100% certain that Gillian has everything planned before she walked through the door. My final observation is to do with David and his conversations with police officers - at the station before he rejoins Gillian he tells the cop that he will have to get back to him about the name of the Jetson's maid! What have they been discussing before this scene starts?
