Aside: I wonder who is in the photo on Maddie’s desk? SHE obviously didn’t bring it, so Dave put it there. Looks like Ted Danson to me! gray LOL!! I tried to figure this out too!! I thought maybe it was a relative of Cybill's? Mother or Grandmother? Welcome back Diane!! I know, I looked really hard...I thought it may be a picture of Cybill's father at a young age. That's what I came up with but maybe it is Howard Hawks (I think that's his name) Ok, here's a link to a clear picture with a little profile to it. What do you think, can it be? upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/2/24/HowardHawks.jpgVery possible, since!! Cybill liked his work.

I'm confused. Maybe I should go back and watch again.... The "killer" we first meet is the little chubby guy in the hospital that dumps Tim Robbins down the bio-hazard chute and later has dinner with Maddie. His name is Farley or Tate? Both! His fake name, the one given to David and Maddie is Farley Wrye. His real name, well at least his "other" name, is Franklin Tate.

Added Question for Bonus Points: We know that Tate BS'd the story about looking for his kid. Do you think his tales about his past that he spun for Maddie in the restaurant were true or bogus as well? I will withold my opinion for a few minutes. Tick....tick....tick.... I'm quoting myself. A bit pretentious, no? Actually I think Tate was truthfull with Maddie. His story about being an OSS agent in France (OSS was Office of Strategic Services - precurser to today's CIA) was pretty accurate. I also liked his tale of being a piano player. The dude was a charmer, even if he did kill people. Going from spy to contract killer really wasn't much of a stretch when you think about it. Especially when he was trained by Uncle Sam to be an assassin and take out high ranking SS officers...not really the easiest targets.

3. Why does David oppose Maddie going into the bar and what do you think the real reason is why he waits in his car while she has dinner with Farley? David opposes Maddie going into the bar because he knows she'll be a dead give away; like fitting a glamor peg in a ghetto hole! There is concern for her safety because David knows (or thinks ) Maddie is a girlie girl; she has no street sense and would be intimidated. When David is laying in beer and peanuts, then Maddie begins to talk with David's transportation to this spot; David is perplexed and asks her why is she talking to this guy who just launched him across the room (paraphrasing of course)...like he's saying "aren't you afraid to deal with this guy?" Also David is in full K.S.A.M. (Knight in Shining Armor Mode) by this time; he's already attached, already in love...he just desires to be around her as much as he can. His mission to be Maddie's everything begins here!

So far, these are the characteristics that we see in Maddie
Idealistic, innocent, romantic, sympathetic heart, determined, strong-willed....and this is just the first episode!
Another question: Do we see any of these characteristics in the Pilot?

6. What would Maddie’s moral of the case story be? And David’s? Even though Maddie suffered at the hands of Ron Sawyer, I think she believes that people are basically good. David, on the other hand, would be thinking "take the money and run - fast".

Another question: Do we see any of these characteristics in the Pilot? Yes, but in the pilot we see more of her strong will and seeming aloofness. As she warms up to David, we see the softer side though.

I agree with Gray. I thought "Farley/Tate" was telling the truth, only romanticizing a bit for Maddie's sake!! She definitely was soaking it all in!!

In another post, I believe someone referenced Maddie's subtle eye shots to David's mouth, like "she wanted to kiss him so hard, her face hurt". (Cybill show fans will understand) Maddie exudes admiration for David...Maddie's willingness to listen and play the game accordingly to ensure success with their first case is genuine; she also desires to prove herself to David or at least match his zeal. Since, I've really got to disagree.....I think that Maddie is determined to make the best of a bad situation in order to make this agency work.....but the only thing I see her exuding is disdain. There is the basic concern there that anyone would have for another human being, especially a coworker, but I don't think the spark has yet been lit......at least on Maddie's part. I do agree that she is determined to make good, and to show this guy she is up to the task, and I believe she is proving to him that she will not wither up and blow away at the first sign of adversity.. I hear ya Diane yet that mind game in the alley (the first of many for our dear Maddie) when she says forget the whole thing and walks away because he won't let her try. IMO, the whine in her voice is symbolic of "let me try, I can do it" like she has something to prove...maybe it's just to herself...maybe it's the excitement but it's more than "let's make this work because I don't have any other choice". PS~Your presence was definitely missed! ;D

4. What is revealed as to Maddie’s character as she wakes up, enters Blue Moon for the first time as its CEO, works the Farley case and solves their first mystery? Maddie excitement about doing something new and her work ethic is revealed.

6. What would Maddie’s moral of the case story be? And David’s? Maddie's moral of the story would be don't judge a book by its cover in regard to Tate. David's is the same regarding Maddie as well as risk is opportunity misspelled~

Another "out there" question - has anyone else noticed how Maddie appears to stare at David's mouth in the scene where David offers to wait for her during her dinner with Farley? She does it in a few other episodes - Symphony is one of them. Don't mind me... You did it again, gray! Those avatars keep getting better and better! Oh yes!! I absolutely noticed this!! ....and so did David, don't ya' think??!! Good job on that avatar gray!!! A++ I love it! Especially the two scenes in one, alley and x-ray specs...so creative~

Hey everybody! Great Qs, bees, and awesome avatar, Gray--the hits just keep on comin'! I am watching from the sidelines tonight because I got caught out of town without my copy of "Gunfight" (let this be a lesson to me: whither I goest, so go my ML DVDs!!), but just wanted to say I'm learning lots about this early ep from your insightful analysis...and I can't wait to get home and watch to see whether it's really Howard Hawks on Maddie's desk!! ;D Have fun!
