Man this is a juicy episode, isn't it? Marple, thanks for posting the lyrics to "Big Man..."!! Weird, I was thinking about this song today while playing golf!! I just love thinking that Billy Joel wrote this for Moonlighting with DAvid in mind, don't all of you!! A couple of verses or lines really ring true for him, but I like to think of MAddie dreaming the words as if David is telling his story to her. Did that make sense at all?LOL!! This is what pops out at me: Why can't I lay low Why can't I say what I mean........ .......Now I ain't a bad guy So tell me what am I trying to prove Why can't I cool out Why don't I button my lip Why do I lash out Why is it I always shoot from the hip I cruise for Houston to Canal street A misfit and a rebel I see the winos talking to themselves And I can understand Why is it everytime I go out I always seem to get in trouble I guess I made an impression on somebody North of Hester and south of Grand What else have I got That I'd be trying to hideMaybe a blind spot I haven't seen from the sensitive side I'm so romantic I'm such a passionate manSometimes I panic What if nobody finds out who I am

Was it just me, or during the big dance number, when Dave married the HOT Tess, did he put the ring on the WRONG finger? LOL!! The HOT Tess as opposed to the other "real" not so good looking Tess?!?!! Sorry, I just did not think that she looked like someone David would be with!! I think it was Since who said it best about MAddie's look when she first meets her. It is almost as if Maddie is thinking the same thing and that she is one up on the competition in the looks department!! No, gray, I did not notice the ring finger....good job!!

Just a side note about David's speech in the hotel, when he describes the "two sides" of his brain...here, in a nutshell, we have the personality of David Addison: on the one hand, the good-time, fun-luvvin' guy ("everything's just fiiine, Dave"); and on the other, the traditional guy who takes family values--and the prospects for his future--seriously ("you wanna work in a gas station your whole life?"). This dichotomy is paralleled in the episode as a whole, and throughout the series, and the fact that they would weave it so organically into this situation is yet another example, IMO, of simply brilliant writing.

Sorry for the multi-posts, but one more thing about that David speech, as I was just now rewatching it...
While Maddie makes virtually no eye contact with David during her speech (though the times she does look up are significant), David looks at her throughout his speech--he doesn't seem embarrassed, or ashamed...he really wants her to understand his experience, without any bantering bluff or avoidance. And you can see Maddie's sympathy in the tears that gather in her eyes, and the way she whispers, "I'm sorry."
BTW, do you ever wonder what would've happened if she had gotten off the bed and said her line in closer physical proximity? David's quick exit from the room suggests to me that he is feeling a shade too vulnerable after pouring out his heart (hence the "I told you it wasn't very important"), and also a shade too drawn to this gorgeous woman with her shining eyes, who has just flown 3000 miles to be with him.
The mind reels... ;D

I so agree jpen!! I think GGC has said that he had written that scene sometime before ML and had always wanted to use it. Man, it worked great, didn't it??!! This is why we love David so much. We get to see the wild side and then they turn around and have him emoting about something that melts all the womens hearts!! ....And graycav just sits back and says "rock on Dave my man"!!!! ;D On the otherhand....and slightly off topic....we do not see enough of Maddie's heart throughout the series and this makes her seem icy, cold and b****y at times. In many ways, this is brilliant writing as well!!

He does tell enough though to be certain MAddie understands that the ordeal was a big deal even though he says it wasn't very important. It was important and Maddie senses it!! He had to get out of there while the gettin' was good!! But, I just gotta say, that I sure do wish I had her pj's!! You can't find 'em like that anymore!!

Will you ever forget her little smile/giggle in "Atlas" or the look she gives David on the plane, or when she kisses his cheek in "Lady in the Iron Mask" or... OK, I'll stop. Gee whillickers, I sure am sappy.

As luck would have it, I happened to order this script about 3 weeks ago and it came today! I just read throuh Act 1 and have come across some minor differences. It's amazing how a simple word or two can change the feeling of a scene. I can post some of these, if you like, as I come across them.

10. Maddie and David each experience an unplanned pregnancy. What do their respective reactions reveal about their characters?
It has already been mentioned, but I agree that David wasn't poppin' his buttons over the pregnancy, but was prepared to do the right thing. Tess was a life long friend and he would never shirk his responsibilities. Can't forget to add his Catholic school upbringing into the mix, as well. He was (is) a pretty straight-up traditional guy.
I think that Maddie is more difficult to analyze. I have replayed (in my head) the scene in the car with Dr. Hill after Maddie has gotten the news. She is not upset or freaky. She smiles and says something like, "It's amazing what you can ignore" (not exact quote). I actually think she is thrilled with the news. After the little exchange with her father, she goes right to the phone and calls David. She hangs up when the machine comes on, but she doesn't leave it at that. She calls Agnes right away and tells her the news. Listen to her voice - she seems very happy. Of course, if you believe in conspiracy theories, one might suggest that she planned the whole thing. I think she lied to David in THH when she said that she had everything under control. I don't think she was that concerned about consequences. It was more like "whatever!" She was very comfortable with the pregnancy. It was a future with David that she questioned. I am not sure what that reveals about her character. I guess I have to think a little harder on that one.

OMG, I just got into Act 2 and I can't believe what I am reading. It doesn't make sense with what happens later on, but I don't want to skip ahead. BUT before I get into Act 2, I'll give you a few of the Act 1 differences.
I will pick up after David leaves Maddie's office ("Well, I'm through listening").
THE DOOR ...closing it behind him...
ON MADDIE
...alone...just standing there for a LONG MOMENT...REPLAYING the SOUND of the door CLOSING in her head...and FINALLY...she makes a decision...PICKS up the phone and waits for someone to answer...
MADDIE (into phone): Mrs. Kendrick? This is Madolyn Hayes. I just wanted to apologize for this morning...And I wanted to tell you that if there's any way you'd consider giving us another chance, you have my word we wouldn't let you down.
(lightens; and then) You would?...Tomorrow morning would be fine. I really appreciate this...We'll be there, eight o'clock sharp. Don't worry...Goodbye.
...and she hangs up...and SIGHS...and STARTS out of her office and into...
THE RECEPTION AREA
...as she BURSTS into it...quickly making her way across the hall to...
DAVID'S DOOR
...and she KNOCKS on the door...and there is no answer...
MADDIE (after a moment; calling through the door): David?
...and there still is no answer...and Maddie looks puzzled...and REACHES for the doorknob...
INT. DAVID'S OFFICE
...dark...LIGHTS OFF...all but one set of blinds closed...David SITTING...his back to us...staring off at the CLOUDY CITY THROUGH the one open set of blinds...and Maddie TAKES THIS IN...and then...
AT THIS POINT THE DIALOG BETWEEN MADDIE AND DAVID IS WHAT WE HEARD UNTIL:
DAVID: And I thought I was having a bad day.
ON MADDIE
...she feels helpless...
MADDIE: Is there anything I can do?
DAVID: Yeah. Tell me all the fights to New York are booked.
MADDIE: I don't understand.
DAVID: Long story. Let's just say I'd rather be going to my own funeral.
MADDIE: Oh. (not really understanding) Well...if you feel that strongly about it, do you really have to go?
DAVID: Yes, I'm afraid I do.
MADDIE: When was the last time you saw him?
HERE DAVID EXPLAINS ABOUT THE 9 YEARS AND THE FACT THAT THE GUY WAS MORE THAN HIS FRIEND. BUT AFTER DAVID SAYS, "I was sort of married to his sister" -
ON MADDIE ...who can't believe she heard right... MADDIE: (after a moment) Oh.
OK, I will post this and then come back with Act 2 -
