BTW, do you ever wonder what would've happened if she had gotten off the bed and said her line in closer physical proximity? David's quick exit from the room suggests to me that he is feeling a shade too vulnerable after pouring out his heart (hence the "I told you it wasn't very important"), and also a shade too drawn to this gorgeous woman with her shining eyes, who has just flown 3000 miles to be with him. The mind reels... ;D LOL yes the mind does reel I wonder if it would have been good to have them have their first time here, it does have the perfect setting, hotel and all but then it makes you think about IACM and how perfect it was all hot and passionate and well hot LOL But maybe Maddie could have hugged David and then they could have leaned in and then kissed like in MTTC, very sweet and innocent . AHHHH to dream

ACT TWO
THE SCENE OPENS AS WE SEE IT - MADDIE AT HER DESK WITH THE PEN IN HER HAND AND AGNES KNOCKS ON HER DOOR
AGNES: Miss Hayes? You haven't been out of your office all day. Would you like me to get you a sandwich or something?
MADDIE: (finally looking up) No. That's okay...I'm fine.
AGNES: You are?
MADDIE: Yes. (and then) No. (and then; the truth) I don't know.
AGNES: Oh. (and then) I'm a little confused.
MADDIE: You think you know a person. You think a person is your friend. You think there's nothing anyone could tell you about that person that would come as a shock...
AGNES: (hunting) Mr. Addison?
MADDIE: Mr. Addison.
AGNES: Oh. (and then) What? (and then) You don't have to tell me. (and then) He's gay...isn't he?
ON MADDIE ...and she just LOOKS at Ms. Dipesto...
MADDIE: Mr. Addison?
AGNES: Well...that's why you should tell me.
MADDIE: (a long moment; and then, simply) Mr. Addison's been married.
AGNES: (shocked) Has he?
...and MADDIE nods...
HERE IS THE SAME DIALOG ABOUT MRS. MR. ADDISON AND THEN THE MAD DASH INTO DAVID'S OFFICE TO LOOK FOR THE WEDDING PICTURES
THEIR P.O.V. - THE DRAWER'S CONTENTS
...filled to the brim with an odd assortmentof junk...toys...games, old issues of Playboy, etc...
ANOTHER ANGLE
...as they both sink to their knees to begin their search...
AGNES: (picking up a rubber chicken) This may take a while...
ON MADDIE
...she starts PICKING UP articles...a DART GUN...a COONSKIN CAP...a BASEBALL MITT...(with a baseball inside it, with rubber bands around it...he's working in the pocket)...from the look on Maddie's face, she could be sorting through a hamper of dirty diapers...
MADDIE: This man doesn't need an office. He needs a playpen.
...and Maddie PICKS UP a stack of magazines...and DiPesto sees them...
AGNES: (trying to reassure Maddie) Don't worry...he only buys those for the articles.
MADDIE: (picking up a magnifying glass) And this is for the fine print, I suppose.
...Maddie puts the stuff back in the drawer...she's losing hope...
MADDIE: (closing the drawer) We're wasting our time. There's nothing in here but junk and smut. Besides, who cares what she looks like?
AGNES: (spotting something) Here's a picture!
MADDIE: (quickly) Where?
...DiPesto REACHES into the bottom of her drawer and PULLS OUT a slightly crumbled 5X7...LOOKS at it...her EYES WIDEN...
AGNES: Hubba, hubba!
...and MaddieTAKES the photo...and LOOKS at it...and LOOKS at DiPesto...
MADDIE: Agnes, I don't think David was married to Miss Bikini California. (and then) He said he met her while he was living in New York. (and then) He was tending bar at some place in the Village. She walked in. It was more than ten years ago...I feel stupid just talking about it. I almost got married a couple of times. Everybody gets married,...or almost married.
ON AGNES
...and she clears her throat...
MADDIE: Your day will come.
AGNES: I know. (and then) What else?
MADDIE: That's all I know.
AGNES: Aren't you dying of curiosity?
MADDIE: Dying? I wouldn't say dying. I'm a little curious, maybe...but only because it's sort of...amusing...to think that David Addison put on a tuxedo, walked down an aisle and promised to spend the rest of his life with someone...I mean I have trouble with the concept of David promising to spend the rest of a night with someone...
(and then pulling herself up from the floor)
It's late. We really should go home.
ANOTHER ANGLE
...as DiPesto does the same...and the two women look at each other...
AGNES: Miss Hayes, if you don't mind my saying so, you're taking this very well.
MADDIE: (amused) Taking what very well, Ms. DiPesto? It's not going to make a difference in my life.
AGNES: It's not?
MADDIE: Of course not. (turning, starting out of the office) So David used to be married. A lot of people used to be married. (and then) Your day for that will come too.
INT. RECEPTION AREA
...Maddie making her way through it...DiPesto following...
MADDIE: So he's going to see her for the first time in nine years? So? What possible impact could that have on my life?
AGNES: None...I guess.
MADDIE: (amuse) You guess?
AGNES: I mean...none. Absolutely.
MADDIE: Absolutely positively. (and there doesn't seem to be any more to say) Well... (and then) See you in the morning.
...and she TURNS and STARTS for the door...
ON AGNES
...it has to be said...
AGNES: (quietly) Unless they got back together.
ON MADDIE'S BACK
...as she STOPS IN HER TRACKS...
MADDIE: (after a long moment; without turning around) What was that?
ON AGNES
...deeply regretting having said something...
AGNES: Nothing. I just said...how about this weather?
ANOTHER ANGLE
...as Maddie SLOWLY TURNS...
MADDIE: You said "unless they got back together".
AGNES: (in an apologetic burst) I know. I know I did, but I didn't mean to! I just opened my mouth and out it came!
MADDIE: And what possible impact could that have on my life?
ON AGNES
...and...as if afraid of giving the wrong answer...she says NOTHING
ON MADDIE
...tired of waiting..
MADDIE: None. It would have none, Agnes. (and then; turning once more) Goodnight, Ms. DiPesto.
...and she is through the door...and a moment later...she is gone...
ON AGNES
...standing there...staring at the EMPTY SPACE where Maddie stood..,and we HOLD for a LONG MOMENT...and then...
DISSOLVE TO: CANDLES ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Well, kids, how about that twist? It sure does change some things - specifically, why Maddie would dream of David meeting Tess in a bar in her dream. I am so curious about the hotel scene now - the story of how David and Tess met doesn't fit with this explanation. Stay tuned.

AHHHH to dream You are so right, Rose...sounds like there could be a fanfic in there somewhere! But seriously, it is so perfect as-is, but the current between them is so strong in this scene--Maddie's "I'm sorry" seems almost like a kiss, doesn't it?

ACT THREE
The stage direction at the end of the scene in Maddie's bedroom before she heads off to dream land is interesting.
...her eyelids START TO DROOP...she's tired, even though she's upset...she finally CLOSES HER EYES to try to sleep...and we PAN AWAY from Maddie to...
THE WINE GLASS
...almost empty...lipstick marks around the rim...a lonely, depressing momento of a lonely, depressing night...we HOLD ON the wine glass for a moment...then...
SLOWLY DISSOLVE --------------------------------------------------------------- There is nearly a page describing the dance sequence - a little different from the final version. Maddie waking up and calling the airline is the same, as is the scene in the bar with Dave and his buddies. One teeny difference when David calls Maddie and leaves the message on her answering machine. After he says, "...if you need anything...call me at the hotel...", the stage direction is:
...he FACES the wall...trying to get a little more privacy...there's a noticeable change in his tone...
DAVID: (and then) Where the hell are you this hour of the night?
...and he QUICKLY HANGS UP...and SIGHS...and we...
SHOCK CUT TO: DAVID WALKING DOWN THE HOTEL CORRIDOR -------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Which line do you like better? "Where the hell are you this hour of the night?" or the filmed version, "What are you doing out this late?" Do you think they convey the same feeling? Don't worry, I'm pondering the answer too.

Thanks for posting parts of the script lin!! Which line do you like better? "Where the hell are you this hour of the night?" or the filmed version, "What are you doing out this late?" Do you think they convey the same feeling? Don't worry, I'm pondering the answer too."Where the hell..." I guess could sound angry? Or could be a better lead in for the next scene. "What are you doing..." Just the way Bruce says this conveys more of his concern for her safety and the fact that he knows it is very unusual for her not to be home at that hour. Maybe a very small way of showing just how well he knows her, yet Maddie does not know what happened 9 yrs. ago. Or...I could just be making stuff up!!

I agree, the "where the hell..." sounds almost angry and very...proprietary, as though she would owe him an explanation. Now of course, she would only owe him an explanation if they were a couple (or if she was his kid )--so it's an interesting choice, but I can see why they would tone it down to "What are you doing..." I think the way he says it shows concern for her, but also a teensy bit of concern about her...as in, who is she with? Is she out on a date? Is there something he doesn't know? There's just a little shade of jealousy there (BW does it so, so well), I think... And watching his face later, at the hotel--there's definitely shock there, but also a little relief (as in, at least I know where she is!) Hey, lin--thanks so much for taking the time to post all this--fascinating stuff!

No i like the version done on tv much better too, i agree with the other posts about this that the What the Hell is kinda angry and David has no reason to be ANGRY at her , But yeah i do love the way BW said those words too. AMAZING small scene showed so much corncern and caring and heck yeah jealousy And LIN thanks again for transcribing this great great stuff from your script! So awesome to read more stuff on an awesome ML episode! Hope we get to find out some more things on other really great great episodes too

Which line do you like better? "Where the hell are you this hour of the night?" or the filmed version, "What are you doing out this late?" Do you think they convey the same feeling? Don't worry, I'm pondering the answer too. I think the edited version contains more emotion...more admittance of David's passion about Maddie. Bruce could have depicted this line adequately conveying his shock and concern; yet we'd feel the great intentions and passion. IMO, this version would have been premature...especially with the next scene being so pivotal to their traveling uncharted territory. The aired version, because of this, is what I prefer. Do they convey the same feeling...to me, yes...one is just more commanding, the other very subtle.

Just a side note about David's speech in the hotel, when he describes the "two sides" of his brain...here, in a nutshell, we have the personality of David Addison: on the one hand, the good-time, fun-luvvin' guy ("everything's just fiiine, Dave"); and on the other, the traditional guy who takes family values--and the prospects for his future--seriously ("you wanna work in a gas station your whole life?"). This dichotomy is paralleled in the episode as a whole, and throughout the series, and the fact that they would weave it so organically into this situation is yet another example, IMO, of simply brilliant writing. Yes, jpen! And it also explains the look on Maddie's face, I think. Like she finally sees that even though this man drives her nuts there is a side to him that has been seriously revealed to her. That of the "responsible" David Addison. Suddenly all of those things she berated him about in the office....drinking too much...being late for appts........limbo contests.....they have become an attraction, albeit still irritating!! And this leads me to something else I have been thinking about and that is Maddie's dream. Have any of you watched the expressions on David's face when the "hot" Tess tries to seduce him in the bar? It's as if he is a man not looking for that type of woman and he tries to ignore her. BTW, I like the towel in the dance!! It's like it represents Maddie seeing David's heart being snatched away!!. Anyway, it is another revealing factor, I think, into Maddie's heart. She sees him as a man who may appear to be a womanizing slug on the outside, but he is very capable of having a serious relationship.....hmmm! And then when Maddie enters the bar, David looks like he is through with women who come around dancing in bars, but then he gives her that look that has always been reserved for Maddie. It happens pretty quickly before she lays that big smooch on him, but it is there none the less!! Well if it were ME there instead of Dave....we'd have never made the funeral either. gray LOL!! Gray, you just simply crack me up!!!

He said he thought everything would be done around 5pm!! Even if that was not right, he could have paid his respects and left to take Maddie out for a nice dinner in NYC!! Gray would have!! LOL!! ;D But, it was great writing to have him spill his boozy heart to a non-english speaking taxi driver!!

Wow.......I just toddled back into town, and I have got to say -- you guys upheld the great Wobblie tradition........what a fantastic job on the Qs and the answers both.
I am gonna jump in with a few comments, if it's not too late, but that will have to be a bit later. I just wanted to point out something related to some points you all have raised.
Cindy and I interviewed Glenn Caron in NYC on September 10, 2002, and remained in the city the next day, the first anniversary of the terrorist attacks. In spite of the fact that we were overjoyed to be meeting the creator of our favorite all time show, there was a pall that hung over the city those several days. During the interview, Glenn mentioned that Phil Ramone had contacted him and offered him a song that Billy Joel had written with the show in mind, "Big Man on Mulberry Street".
The first time I watched the episode after the interview, I was startled by the images of the Towers....I am not sure I had ever really SEEN them when watching the episode before.
Forever in my mind, BMOMS is intertwined with that time in New York for me, and again reminds me to honor the bravery and valor of those Real "Big Men" of New York who gave their lives.

10. David and Maddie each experience an unplanned pregnancy. What do their respective reactions reveal about their characters? I think it's been said here already by you all but heres my 2cents They definitely reacted differantly and kinda the same too maybe. David stepped up right away to take responsibility for his part with the baby and Tess, got married and everything, true he wasnt overjoyed at what was it about 17 years old ? And when He found our Maddie got pregnant he did the same and stepped up to take responsibility even if he here wasnt 100% sure the baby was his he wanted to marry Maddie and rasie this baby with her. I think he was very happy about this baby with Maddie cause well for one he was/is so madly in love with her and well he isnt a teenager anymore., he's a grown adult who is ready and able to help care for a child now. Kinda sad to think he suffered losing 2 of his own babies. Maddie seems to run from her problems ad well i think she may have known before she found out and was scared i think cause she wasnt married and i think Maddie beleived thats how it should be done, marriage first then kids. She hid for 4 1/2 months from David so it wasnt like she was overjoyed to share this experience with him it seemed, maybe it was due to the fact that she wasnt sure who the father was and didnt want to tie David down in case the baby wasnt his. But i think Maddie grew very happy about the situation. Too bad she couldnt have had it, babires could have been off camera but around , like a nanny or something. oh well
