I'm almost two years late to this discussion, but I'll jump in anyway. But I hope you don't mind if I don't tackle the Qs but just ramble on.
Hmmm, 1987 - I'm not sure if I agree with you about Maddie's motivation. You could be right and surely the script draws one's attention more to the topic of jealousy. But had I not read the passage, I'd think her motivation to follow him was more her concern about him and maybe curiosity - she wanted to know more about the former Mrs. Mr. Addison, more about the story of the marriage (both of which she'd get).
The initial scene showing us a completely irresponsible David (yes, Maddie was absolutely right in that situation to be mad at him!) was meant to underline the contrast to the "marriage story". Beautiful to see how fast Maddie can get down from her "moral superior high horse" - she came after David in the middle of the night (a
very spontaneous move, BTW) without paying a second thought to her appointment with the client the next morning (I wonder if she sent somebody else to deliver the pictures?!).
The bar scene: yes, David wanted to let Maddie know he was allright, but more I think he wanted the comfort of hearing her voice, feeling her near in a moment of need. And then she's not home! And when he walked down that hotel corridor, it almost broke my heart.
I can see strong parallels between the two here in this ep - when it's about really important matters of life, David is the most dependable person in the world (and deep, deep down she knows that - that's why she sees him not as responsible for the break-up). And when it's about really important things in life, Maddie is the most feeling, emphatic person in the world and doesn't give a flying fig about obeying rules, weighing pros and cons and such a crap.
Another parallel: in Maddie's speech we all (with her) longed for David saying something when her words lingered between them
"It's not like we're..."But I also went like
Come ON!! when afterward he came to her room and said in that amazed tone
"You came all the way over here, why did you do that?" and she just answered, almost carelessly,
"I don't know." Guys, you both have a looooooooooooong way ahead of you to go! Yes, a little comes a long way...
Both performances are superb here, Maddie's speech is greatly delivered and shows us a Maddie we'd love to see more often; David's silence... what can I say, he's great when he talks, but often even greater when he doesn't. Maddie doesn't understand at first, and his silence makes her indeed feel awkward.
And later, David's tale... it seems so genuine and so sweet when he tells Maddie about his first love - in spite of what he says ("it wasn't important") I think it
was important to him, and not only because of the result. It was very special, kind of like he was under a spell.I love it so much when he says
"I felt so safe!" I think that's why Maddie isn't bothered by no means and appreciates he shares his memory with her; she's touched by this revelation of his softness and by the baring of his soul (I think that's what touches the viewer so much about this scene, at least me).
Maddie's silence is a comforting one; she not trying to analyze this makes him feel comfortable and willing to tell her (almost) everything. Why didn't he tell the entire truth? Frankly, I don't know, and I think it doesn't matter that much - as he himself puts it "Another person in bed with your wife is another person in bed with your wife; the gender's not the main issue" (I'm paraphrasing). And I think Maddie sees it the same way, therefore she doesn't tell him in the end she found out the truth. If it's okay for him, it's okay for her.
Of course I would have loved to see a kiss, but I'm okay with the writer's choice here; maybe a kiss would have been too... I don't know the right word to express it, maybe too much? Maybe it would have distracted too much from the great and important evolution of characters and relationship in this ep and the subtlety with which it was delivered.
I must say, this ep left me completely touched and just like... wow (Or, as Agnes would have said
"boy!") Of course, the dance performance was great, and I must say I don't agree with what Cybill said in her book about this ep that she felt the dream sequence seemed to be more like what David's fantasy would have been (instead of Maddie's). I think the sequence made totally sense as Maddie's dream.
The final scene is priceless; I love David's look when she offers half the blanket and he replies
"I thought we'd figure that out when we get to your place" He definitely thinks it's time for a bit of lightness again! Such a tender moment, gotta love it.
I hope you don't think it's to profane here, fellas, but I feel my post about an ep is not complete without listing a few quotes.
A: "Are you in trouble?"
D: "Me? In trouble? Trouble's my middle name. I laugh at trouble. I tickle trouble under the chin!"
A: "Miss Hayes seemed a little upset."
D: "Miss Hayes is always a little upset."
M: "I used to wear hot pink to funerals, but I always felt guilty about weaking up the dead!"
But the cracker came from one of David's pals in the bar scene:
"What the hell happened to your hair?!" ;D
