4. Maddie's conversation with Preston Holt: Diane, I am so glad you asked this question!! I didn't remember this scene at all before I rewatched, but I found it totally arresting this time. Her softness, and above all, her sense of humor about herself are so wonderful and so rare...I found myself wishing so hard that David were in Preston's place!! (My first thought, actually, was "I wonder if she ever told David that story?")
I definitely don't think it was in character for her to open up to a stranger, and was most likely a case of the writers still getting a feel for what worked and what didn't. Alternatively, though, you could view it as a very strategic ploy on Maddie's part to soften Holt up so he would tell her what she wanted to know....

3. Maddie's physical assaults on David never bothered me. It always seemed to show how much he could get her worked up. I know it is so politically incorrect, but somehow I just find it hysterical. He could push her buttons right from the git-go.

Okey dokey...thanks for your patience, folks. Glad you all had fun boosting your post counts! I've gotta mention, the first time I saw this episode, I was majorly excited because a main character who had been on one of my soaps played Vivian. I was very impressed that she had made it to the ML "big time". OK... the Qs: 1. What do you think about the male/female stereotypes in this episode? It is clear that Vivian is suffering in the family business...but what do you think about David's approach to Maddie in this episode? 2. This is a silly question, I know, but let's face it folks, this is not one of the best episodes, and it is certainly not full of deep topics to discuss.....so I move to MADDIE'S HAIR RETROSPECTIVE...who thinks they were auditioning hairdressers in this episode? 3. This episode continues the trend of Maddie continuing to physically assault David. Do you react to her kicks, pushes, punches, etc as a good thing? Is it really too early in their relationship for her to be that physical with him? 4. Maddie's conversation with Preston Holt has her revealing personal info about her modelling days. Is Maddie opening up to a stranger something you might expect, or possibly just a writer's viewpoint without knowing her longterm character? 5. In spite of the fact that I think the storyline of this episode is weak, it's got to be one of the most quotable episodes. (I think the writer, Joe Gannon, must have switched to stand-up with so many good one liners). What's your favorite quotable quote...or two...from this episode? OK...shall we start with these? diane OK, I have homework due in 2 hours and I'm totally busy but I'll do my best to give my view of the questions. 1. Stereotypes...although Vivian's dilemma is deeper, David still views Maddie as this beauty with no depth to discover the truth...as a man, he knows best but I love when David tells her "I believe in you" too sweet! 2. Hairstyles....I love the hair, curly up do and all, she's beautiful, I don't care, she look great to me! 3. Physical assaults on David... I remember as kids when a boy likes you, he usually hit you because he didn't understand his feelings towards you (viewed as a girl but this is vice versa)... Maddie touching him physically is the best way she knows how because she doesn't understand her need to touch him, so she strikes him. 4. Maddie opening up...I think she is just speaking what she knows and therefore it inadvertently reveals a part of her character. 5. My favorite quote is Maddie saying "So, you believe me?" and David saying "NO, but I believe IN YOU" fabulous and sweet! P.S. The wet look is definitely David and Maddie!!! ;D

ML started out with a lot of slapstick from the beginning, especially with MAddie throwing punches and biting legs!! I think it is funny and does not take away from her glamour look at all. It shows her strong willed nature and her ability to take care of herself.
Having said that, I have always cringed when she slaps him after they first meet in the pilot, in MWCW and in IAC....M. But, maybe that is what the writers wanted me to do.......it certainly raised the heat in the room!

4. Totally agree with jpen on this one. It really was not in Maddie's character to share intimate moments of her past with a stranger. This is probably the only time we see this side of Maddie and it is nice. Even when she enters the restaurant, the maitre d' recognizes and welcomes her. Even though there are so many references to Maddie's fame in the series, there are very few instances where her celebrity is obvious.

I think that was...modern! Odd...But nice! Innovative! It is kinda ironic, though, that in this ep, her hair is most "fussy" when she herself is showing her softer side... There. That's all the "deep meaning" I can get out of it. I tried! ;D That's exactly what I was trying to convey! Agree 300%, jpen! I always thought of Maddie's hairstyle as a symbol of her iciness. Boy, how I love that uncombed hair in the roof scene! And Dave is right: wet do becomes her! Ah, I love that messy look! She looks more human indeed!

5. Many great quotes in this episode. The first one that comes to mind? "Guy to girl, outie to innie" - LOL

I agree with jpen. I really like how she opens up about herself with Holt.
This may be the only time we hear her speak of her modeling days. It obviously impacted her life in good and bad ways. She seems to have learned from that life she had before, possibly explaining her way of doing things at Blue Moon and her Avoidance of certain feelings and emotions later. Is it out of character for her? I don't think so. If David and Maddie were ever presented the chance to actually sit and talk quietly I think Maddie would have talked about her modeling days. This was never an option for those two!! Part of the charm of the show though!!
I agree, she also uses her story to get to Holt as she compliments him on his looks and business smarts.
She enjoys the attention he is giving her, though! But, she immediately gets turned off from him when he offers to stay and pay her to do so. She was actually glad to see Papa Bear at the door, I think!!

I give a thumbs up for the side swoop thing, but we never see it again - nor do we see her hair straighter again like during the stakeout or "The Dream Sequence..." The 80's hairstyles bother me sometimes.
I loved Maddie's little monologue during her dinner with Preston Holt because it did give us more insight about her. I liked her attitude about not looking back.
Btw, I also loved it when David ("Medicate me" lol) and Maddie had to strip and jump into the pool far below. They are so cute together!

I always liked Maddie's hair when it was down and more natural.
OK, she isn't a dog with her mop all tied up, but somehow her All-American good looks (no offense to our International Audience) goes better with the hair about her shoulders.
I just prefer that to the piled up hair seen in the casino scene, in this restaurant scene, in Atomic Shakespear, etc. (Is there an E on the end of Shakespear???)

3. As a dude, the physicality of Maddie in dealing with Dave doesn't bug me all that much. I suppose it reminds me of the scuffles all young boys get into....I mean, if you had a disagreement, you settled it with a short bout of fisticuffs...and then you got back to playing. Nobody ever really got hurt and nobody held a grudge. This may sound odd, but I'd much rather get a kick in the shins than the (non-physical) kick in the gut that "grown up" girls can use to such great effect later in life. I think the same, graycav. David's tone is jokey, he didn't mean to hurt Maddie's feelings! They're just skirmishing! But that gal is unable to take jokes!
