Hey Gray
What is your take on DAvid talking to Maddie about motherhood?

Bees: I thought that was a wonderful scene that allowed us to get to know both characters a bit more. The subject of children, while mentioned in an earlier post, is normally not brought up in casual conversation, IS something that usually comes up as relationships grow. Some people say you can tell how nice a person is by how they treat kids, old people and animals. I'm not sure that is a perfect corrolation, but I suppose there may be something to it. David, to this point, hasn't seen Maddie either been in a situation with children or discussed the subject with Dave before, so this seemed like a good time to bring it up. And for the record...I would have helped as well.

You know, Maddie may have had it up to HERE with being asked about having kids. I mean, she is by now 35 or so, and you know how it goes. "Maddie, you are so pretty, when are you going to settle down and have children?"
Of course, she never had to deal with dear old Dave asking the same thing, eh?
And with that, it's off to dreamland kiddes. Here's to visions of sugarplums dancing in your heads....whatever kind of sick image THAT brings.
Outtahere!!!

One thing I picked up on listening to the commentary (which was really good by the way) was how they acknowledged the fact that they created a world where people would actually want to inhabit. Now me, personally I would rather be a Private Investigator living on a private estate on Oahu driving the owner's Ferrari, but that gig was taken. I suppose a job in a fancy office in Century City comes in a close second. Actually, I DO believe I inhabit Century City, 1985/89!! My house's at Pooh Corner....... I'm much shorter than Larry Hendersen, though.............Thinner......And less hairy, too............ Night, jpen!!! Night, bees! ;D Thanks for the GREAT GREAT questions!!

"Maddie, you are so pretty, when are you going to settle down and have children?" You are probably absolutely right about that, especially in the 80's!! My oldest daughter is 23 and is graduating this month from college. Many relatives always ask her about boyfriends, if she found a husband, etc.. She is like, omg mom!! She has plans to enter grad school in a doctorate program and wants to be a clinical psychologist. A husband right now is not her priority!! Much like MAddie! On a side note, I have told her that psycho mumbo-jumbo won't work on me.....but she may need to analyze all of us one day!! ;D

My relatives ask me the same things, too! BTW, clinical psychology is a fascinating field! Would she pencil me in for a little session in the foreseeable future? P.S. Psycho mumbo-jumbo, LOL!!! ;D ;D That's what I like of this place: I learn something new everyday......

I think the definition of happiness for David at least, was well established in his mind before this episode. I believe that it has its basis in his childhood. I see Dave's childhood as similar to mine with buddies to hang out with, a traditional family, playing ball, riding bikes....the simple pleasures of lower middle class American upbringing. We weren't poor, but now looking back at it, we didn't really have much in the way of possessions. We MADE happy, by doing things, by enjoying others company...we didn't PURCHASE happy. I get the feeling that Maddie's upbringing, while obviously comfortable due to her father's income, was less, well, warm. During the entire run of the series we see little of Maddie's friends, either from childhood or from her career, and two we DO get to meet (Sam and Annie) don't appear to be the most likeable sorts. So, I suppose David equates childhood with happiness, and Maddie doesn't get the link, at least not in the beginning. Graycav, just wanted to tell you how brilliant this remark is!! I think you're absolutely right: Maddie has been kept under a bell jar most of her life, IMO. Her parents are upper class people. It's hard to find genuine friends when you're rich. Then her career as a model put her on a pedestal............It's lonely up there. Just like she said in "Those Lips, Those Lies", if you're a well-known face people tend to see you as if you were a piece of meat behind a counter. Sure, she made good money, but, IMO, she never really bonded with anybody.... She never found that special someone who could help her FEEL. Until David, of course! GREAT posts, graycav! I'm glad you were able to join us! I told ya we'd wait for ya!!

hey all! I finally am able to write alittle about this episode. Life is just has been crazy for me, my mom has somethings going on, so i'm here but alittle late 1. *Everyone has really said all about this episode again but the time i show up But Maddies happiness was money i think before she met David. She was too busy modeling and making all that money and taking her crusies(see Pilot) and living in her big house all alone. Weird she bought a big house to live all alone in huh? David may be wild and carefree but deep down he seems to be a family type man. David i guess felt at some point he would settle down and have kids so i guess he figures maddie would too or should even. We know deep down David loves Maddie and maybe he see her as the one to have a family with. Maddie didnt realy coo over the baby and most people do so it alarmed David. So he figured i better go in for the kill and ask her how she felt about kids. ld you say teaches Maddie to open her heart to the Christmas spirit? 2: I think everyone played a part in this episode to show Maddie a different view of life. David. Agnes, the baby are all part of the puzzle. David is the last to really hit the mark i think with with maddie during their talks in the car. 3: Again David knows Maddie best, like Maddie knows David best. Its a given at this point already. 4. Agness may be cooky but we see shes a person who feels for life like babies so she must want one down the road and i'm sure she and herbert had one once the show ended LOL Just for fun: 1. How badly do you wish David could have seen Maddie with Agnes and the baby under the tree? A D/M scene with baby under the tree would have been so divine! SO heavenly really, like a wish for the future for them! 2. What is the one prop that shows up in just about every scene?!?! WOW i so did not notice that! Must go back and watch again! This is a very sweet episode! I love when shows do holiday episodes! The beginning isnt very sweet obviously but most of the shows beginnings werent due to it being about detectives and solving cases but really was this show ever about cases? LOL I really love the end with them coming out of character. More shows i wish did this and i think ML is rare is this case. I loved seeing the closeness between the actors. It sure seemed real and all the rest of the crew is like given a chance to shine in front of the camera too which is so nice for them too great episode to watch this time of year always!

Sorry to have missed last week's Christmas party. I really liked this episode (and again everyone's comments on it), so I'll just make a few quick notes on both.
This was a pleasant episode, with the most significant moments (by my call anyway) being 1) the somewhat foretelling baby conversation between Maddie & David in the car and 2) the influence David, Agnes and Blue Moon's cases & clients have on Maddie. I am really taken with Gray's observation about the made v earned happiness and it's a perfect reflection of the fundamental character elements of each David and Maddie.
In addition to that, I do agree with jpen about the violent beginning being in contrast to the rest of the episode - had a hard time reconciling the brutes that hurled "Joseph" off that balcony with the stooges that later allowed themselves to be assaulted with children's toys (then again, they did fire very serious bullets through a sofa at a baby, two women and San-tee Claus).
Lastly, the biblical parallels & David's disappointment with the child's name were so funny & clever and enjoyed the closing of this episode with the cast & crew. The only thing that could've made this one better (to the want else would you have liked to have seen end) would've been a bit more of a D&M closing...perhaps them exchanging some non-material gifts of some sort and/or bidding a sweet farewell to the baby, with either scenario highlighting the shift in Maddie's thinking.
