Back to favorite scenes - I love the exchange between David , Maddie and Sonny when Sonny asks them who they are working for..."What for do you want to know who we're working for?" Client confidentiality. "Of course." "Of course." "Of course." Maddie's back and forth between David and Sonny is great.

Ooh, me too, lin212! I've always loved the way Maddie says "Talk to him!" with such exasperation. I can't put my figure on why, but I just love it.

I like how Cybill played Maddie in this too, Lin212. Especially in the office scene where David is offering his, uh, affections, ahem!!
"David, stop now while there is still time!" She could be so funny sometimes and a lot of times people did not notice this because she was basically playing the straight man in screwball comedy.
And yes, there is a softness quality that I wish we could have seen more of!!

Yes, beesnbears! That's the other performance of Cybill's that I love. My favorite line is when she says "Nod if you understand" and he nods obediently. So cute!

jpen, great point about Paul being safe. It brings to mind David's comment about his "business partner having feelings for a dead man".
As for Maddie being naked in the bed - I too took note of that. Interesting decision...

I agree ditzy with your comment about the car scene in the rain. It just makes me squirm. Isn't that amazing that a scene like that can do that to us!! (or me, anyway!)
This was the first time that they hurt each other and unfortunately it will happen again and again. Mis-communications and misunderstandings always plagued them!!

Bees and Ditz - aren't those such great lines? The writing is so amazing and Cybill and Bruce bring every single word to life with perfect delivery!

Hmmm, the naked in bed choice...........another sign of her true loneliness.....kind of reminds me of "Blonde on Blonde". I guess she got these "urges" once a season or so!!

I definitely noticed Maddie's nakedness in bed. How to be delicate...IF the writers were implying what I think they MIGHT have been implying...wow. Rock on with your envelope-pushing selves in 1985! Also, none of these thoughts crossed my mind when I was 12. It reminds me of this scene from That 70s Show: www.youtube.com/watch?v=BIWO0PUkH4QBack on topic: Something else I noticed upon re-watch is how physically comfortable they are with each other so early on in their relationship. Maddie puts her hands on David's shoulders, he grabs her arm, they walk out of the office at the end of the episode with their arms slung affectionately around each other's backs. With the passage of time, people tend to refer to David and Maddie as hating each other, but they really were quite friendly and close in a lot of ways and quite often, even from the beginning.

All of this talk of loneliness has made me realize something.
Are we to feel sorry for Maddie here? I mean, she is an independent woman of the 80's. She had a successful modeling career, even though that crook Sawyer swiped all her money, and now she is in charge of her own detective agency. She is strong-willed, is not really as icy as she tries to appear and she has a classiness all her own.
Then why do I feel bad for her?!? Because all she is missing is companionship. She just doesn't know it yet.........

ditzy, I totally agree with how physically comfortable they are with each other. Right from the beginning we frequently see David holding Maddie's hand. Actually, you see a lot of this in the first 2 seasons, not as much afterward.

Oh my, these comments have left me speechless. I'm having a hard time coming up with my favorite classic ML moment from this episode because there are so many to love. But, I have always loved the "boinking" conversation in the car. Maddie forcing David out of the car is priceless. Boy, he certainly knew the right buttons to push when it came to Maddie Hayes.

bees, I think we feel bad for her here because she seems particularly vulnerable at this point. The cool exterior is peeled away and we are privy to her inner thoughts and feelings.

Interesting thoughts, beesnbears. I feel sorry for her, too. But I think it's more than just not having a man in her life. She doesn't have anybody in her life, it seems. With everything she has going for her, not having a boyfriend or a husband wouldn't be a big deal. It's the fact that, except for her parents who are far away, she doesn't seem to have any love or affection in her life at all. And all the money (even though she doesn't have that anymore!) and things and success doesn't mean much if your life is empty of meaningful relationships with people.
