Time to answer question 2! Even if I think you already talked out the matter. Your thoughts are amazing! I believe Maddie has a strong ethical code. I think her brain works this way: things in column A have to be done, things in column B can be done, things in column C are forbidden. Well, mixing heat up with love is for sure listed under column C! Maddie grows acrimonious when David says: " Love, heat, what's the difference?...etc. " She gets mad because the people surrounding her don't have that code, therefore they act spontaneously. No one would deny it: spontaneity may very well get you into trouble!! Well, Maddie isn't exactly a daring person. Spontaneity is under column C. That's why she plays it safe. She imposes this attitude on herself, she always has. But underneath her controlled way to deal with things... there's an impetuous soul burning with passion. Yes, maybe she envies David, MacGillicudy and most of the people on this Planet, because it's easier for them to express their feelings. They're free. She's not. Maddie knows she's different, but when nobody remembers it to her, she's fine with it, she can stand it. Well...That's exactly what David did! David hits a nerve. The one that hurts the most. That's why Maddie is so angry with him. Maddie simply explodes. Once again she has to face the truth about herself, her rigidity toward life... I'm sure she doesn't like being rigid, it's just a habit. I happened to observe that people who may seem a little unfeeling or uncaring at first sight loosen up at the double when they hang around with crazy, loud people!! ;D (BTW, I'm always in the loud group... ) Maddie goes through the same thing: she overreacts, gets mad, loses control... and finally, she loses her inhibitions: she slaps David. And it's therapeutic, because after that... she changes. That scene is a twist in the plot, and a very important one, because thanks to David (a crazy, loud, over-the-top guy) she shakes some of her restraints off her gentle soul.

Another great episode! I only wished that later (after IACM) Maddie remembered her change of mind, her admitting that weighing pros and cons may be some kind of avoiding decisions, avoiding life! Of course, she's not completely wrong with her thinking about rationality, but - as nearly always - she's exaggerating a bit. Methinks too that's because she's afraid of life - of real life. I don't know if her various physical assaults of David, of her Dad, are rooted in spontaneity; I think it's more losing control which has nothing to do with spontaneity. More with passion, I think. And there are occasions when even our queen of rationality loses control to passion we've all seen that - if she's driven far enough. And we know who's the best man for this job, don't we? ;D I think that what David told her in the scene which lead to the slap was on the one hand exactly what he thought in that moment - wore his heart on his sleeve again - on the other hand maybe, just maybe he wanted to provoke her to commit such a violent act, don't you think? To make her understand a trifle the situation that lead Bower to hitting Melissa. And it worked, didn't it? BTW, did anybody notice that in that scene Maddie wore exact the same heavy bracelet she had put on in "I Am Curious... Maddie" when she slapped him?? I'm sure it was the same! Kinda connection between slaps? If that was on purpose, and I tend to think so, they were even cleverer than I thought so far! I liked very much the scene when she showed up at Bower's "spontaneously"; I take this as her apology to David, and obviously he does, too. His smile shows that he has understood and that he accepts her apology. No need for words. The kisses... what can I say? Super hot of course - I liked David's better, because I always like it when he just grabs her, period. ;D ;D As this is a quite serious, deep-going ep, it has not so many funny lines, my favs are: M: "David, what are you doing down there?" D: "If you have to ask, I must not be doing it right!" D: "Let's rock!" M: "What do we say?" D: "Mother, may I please rock?" I dunno why, but this one cracks me so up!! And - anybody noticed that the "dirty" ones are getting dirtier so far in season 3?? (Not that I wanna complain about it, though... ) Remember Maddie's "You'll need a bigger gun" from "The Son also rises"? Here I found this one: D: "Everybody have a nice weekend? Guys, let's see those bloodshot eyes... Ladies, any rug-burned backs? Liars!" Well, well, well... if the following eps continue like this, I'll not just be fine with it, but delighted! Does that make me a bad girl? ;D

Super hot of course - I liked David's better, because I always like it when he just grabs her, period. ;D ;D Yeah - David's kisses are the best as they're usually more frantic :-) However - both are hot. I remember watching this for the first time and I just stopped breathing when the first one happened - I thought wow, she kissed him! Then obviously I realised it was in their minds ha ha.

His smile shows that he has understood and that he accepts her apology. No need for words. I liked this too - she is good at speaking with actions (sometimes) - and you know she's thought really hard about it. Cute. They are so in tune with each other here :-)

Round Three, here we go... These are the questions I've come up with. Please feel free to add any of your own! 1. Maddie is often characterized as being cold, but she seems genuinely excited for MacGillicudy when she first hears of his marriage and even hugs him. How would you describe Maddie’s relationship with the employees? 2. Why do you think Maddie is so angry with David throughout much of this episode? It seems to go beyond simple philosophical differences that, by now, she should be fairly accustomed to. What do you think is behind it? 3. In the scene in Maddie’s office that ends with her slapping David, what do you think is David’s motivation when he says such mean things about the “crap” underneath her “attractive” exterior? 4. The kisses at the end of the episode mark the second time that David and Maddie have dreamt or fantasized vividly about kissing each other (the first, of course, being during The Dream Sequence Always Rings Twice). How would you describe the differences between the two sets of fantasies, and to what would you attribute those differences? 5. The interactions between David and Maddie in this episode cover a wide spectrum of emotions. Which interaction, or scene, do you like the best, or find to be the most significant? Rhetorical Questions: 1. What kind of a dentist asks a patient if they’ve been brushing? Flossing, I understand. But brushing? Who doesn’t brush? 2. Is Jim Brower seriously cracked, or what?

A lot has already been said but....
Maddie really wants her employees to like her and is genuinely happy for MacGillicudy. She believes a great deal in tradition and the institution of marriage and takes it very VERY seriously. For Maddie, marriage is SACRED and something never to be entered into lightly. This is why, when she finds out the whirlwind nature of Mac's marriage, she gets mad: he entered into it lightly in her opinion and she takes great exception to this. At the same time Maddie is jealous of MacGillicuddy being able to find someone just like that when she can't. And, I concur that the root of Maddie's anger with David is that David has exposed the fact that Maddie may be missing out on something because she can't let herself go, be spontaneous (i.e. lose control). I am less sure exactly why David is so mad at her so quickly, but if I were to hazard a guess, I think he is mad because he is afraid that she will never lose control with him. Her "crap" is really what's getting in the way of their relationship progressing. The poor guy is frustrated (literally)! And the theme of what's on the outside (physical form) vs. what's on the inside (character, loyalty, love and integrity) of a person is a motif that pervades the entire series.
Question 4 is easy: the kisses in Dream Sequence Always Rings Twice originated in the characters' subconscious minds (they were asleep and dreamed about it). In this episode, they are both very much awake, and these fantasies arose from their conscious minds. They both are getting closer to actually realizing that they feel something for one another on a much deeper level.
About the music from this episode, "Waiting for a Girl Like You" I think was chosen for the exact reason that the person who posted the lyrics suggested: the words describe exactly how they are feeling about each other. However, I think if feels a little jarring because it is stylistically different from any other music used in the show. It is pop and popular in the mid 80s - it is neither classic ("Since I Fell for You") nor 60s Motown which is what virtually every other song chosen for the series is.
I just love rewatching this and seeing so MUCH MORE to it than I saw when I was younger!

Love your comments, Maud! Especially your answer about the kisses. I'm also kind of glad they didn't really kiss! I know, I know....but I just love how we are left to think about which fantasy is which. And it's just really hot to me!! This is one of my all time favorite episodes.
