Bees said:The only way I can justify Maddie saying this is that what she was trying to tell David was she knows him like the back and front of her hand as well and not only are they in some kind of relationship that she can't really define, she also sees him as her best friend......that is not necessarily a bad thing! But like Agnes said...it does make it sound over.
It's a testament to how awful the PALS speech was how uber excited I got about the "we're on this ladder, and I don't see a way off" line. Somehow I just guessed that was as close as the two of them would ever be - right at that moment.
I totally get that just because you know a person that well, doesn't mean you must or should have a romantic/sexual relationship. Defining the intimacy level of their relationship to me, wasn't a positive sign for them. I read it as over-complicating something that need not be so complex. Oh...Maddie!

Actually, at this stage of my life I have many chick friends that I'm not boinking, or thinking of boinking. However in my single years, I was not so.....enlightened. Sorry. Men are pigs. And yes, the Calder Cup DOES look nice here in Hershey where it belongs. Heh heh.

Hi all, without delving into every question, I was and still am so confused with Maddies behaviour, she changes like the wind. But I think she proves in the end, when she talks about them being such a great team, etc. etc. and then proceeds to be an expert pool player, that he still doesn't know her as well as he thinks he does. We women have to keep some secrets, cause as gray says men are pigs! David was no angel, the women, the drinking. I think Maddie was maybe protecting herself. BTW, just in case you all missed my other thread, don't forget to check out sexy BW on Wmagazine.com and let me know what you think. Luv u all, Phyll.

While I agree it probably wasn't a positive sign, it may not have been a negative one either. Maddie may have indeed complicated things by running away to Chicago and then not coming home a little sooner once she found out she was pregnant, marrying Walter, etc., but I could understand her questioning what type of relationship she and David had at this point. I think we did get a little peek at her heart with the ladder speech. Both of them seemed afraid to put themselves out there again, especially David. And you can't really blame him. MAddie just wants to be certain that if she does the chasing there is something to chase.
There relationship was complex from the get-go!!
The problem became after this episode where writers did not know the characters.

Talking about the ladder speech, what do you think would have happened if the phone hadn't rung as they were walking out the door heading to a "little bistro"? David took her hand, he had already made reservations - what did that mean? Was he planning a romantic evening? Maddie didn't refuse the invitation. Hmmmmmmmmm...another case of "what if?"

3. We know that David thinks he knows Maddie better than anyone. In what ways does Maddie show she knows David "like the front of her hand" in this episode? This is a good question because I think this reveals more about how Maddie has changed...or how David has "filled in her blanks". And how she may have actually considered or come to terms with the fact that she could actually make a life with someone like David. She states that she is going to be more accepting of David and his office flaws, quirks, etc. And she also says later that she knows why David is being glib about the status of their relationship. She knows he wants more while trying to hide it behind the glibness. Agree, bees. Also, Maddie reschedules the 10:00 meeting knowing that David would not make it. Then she is pretty certain that David will be upset that she wants to give the $15,000 to Nora Cooper. Yeah....they know each other pretty well.

That Dave coming up with a "count" of Maddie's past partners seems a bit, well, low for an international jet setting model who was at the top of her game in the late 60's and early 70's, the height of the sexual revolution. I mean Dave only gave her "credit" for a solitary one night stand! Somehow I think I am opening a can of worms here...... I get a kick out of the fact that David never mentions Walter. Does that mean that they didn't...well, you know....

Oh yes lin212 and jpen - the mind does indeed reel! I thought that this episode had so much potential - there was a lot of intimacy between them and the date? Oh why throw the idea to us like a little bone with a fragment of meat attached if they weren't going to go on that date? Thwarted again! I think good things would have happened because they're on that ladder...so it would be inevitable, if given a chance, to move up a rung! Oh and that pool room scene was hot hot hot! The physical contact, the way they were dressed, the innuendo! Felt like the good old days :-) ;D

Maybe Maddie really was upset that David had come in late. He tells her about some of what he had odne the night before but maybe she is a bit uh jealous and and hurt that he still is partying and uses "pals" as a way to put up a defense against him...and maybe jab him a bit too. Just a thought
