HI guys......we've had no volunteers to monitor the discussion this week, so I suggest we all toss in a couple of questions, and see what happens.
That said, I am behind and am not going to get around to mine till later tonight...sorry. I'll watch with the script for any goodies.
The following questions were left by our friend Gray, who is vacationing. Have fun!
1. Maddie says she is not the kind of person who enjoys having a fuss made over her birthday. This seems rather odd for someone with her background. Most folks in the entertainment industry (I count modeling in there) crave ANY kind of attention. David thinks its because she is aging and Maddie counters with it being about the year being worse than the year before. What is YOUR take on it?
2. How did that body get out of the morgue without David and Maddie waking up?
3. In this ep, Maddie discounts magic, yet in Wonderful Job she confronts the Angel asking if he was a Genie or a Witch. What do you think caused the the big turnaround in her beliefs in the supernatural?

Evening, kids. Here are a few more questions for your consideration:
1. How do you think David feels when Maddie describes the past year as a "quantum leap backward"?
2. In the mortuary, Maddie gets very angry at David when he brings in the cake and candles. Then she does an about face and tells him to shut off the lights, re-light the candles and sit next to her, smiling. Why the sudden change in attitude?
3. In the final scene, why do you think Maddie admits to David that she's "considered the possibility" of a higher being?

I kind of find myself putting the answer to these two questions together. In "God..." Maddie finds herself in a place she never imagined when she was making money, traveling, on the cover of every magazine. And just when she thought she had made her place in the world the scumbag Sawyer takes off with all of her money while she is on a much deserved vacation. Maybe she blames herself for that, I don't know, but she is looking back and seeing that she is not in the place she thought she would be at this point in her life. David is confused because he is probably feeling like he is on the verge of being exactly where he wants his life to be...as soon as he wins the blonde.
About a year later in Wonderful Job she realizes...which I think becomes a huge revelation for her...that her life has indeed come to a place where hard work can be more rewarding to her life in other places besides her pocketbook. I also think that David has had a huge influence with how he views certain areas of life and living and she sees that some of this has rubbed off on her. Although, I am not sure she would admit this until much later!

I think he is a little disappointed that she is looking at working with him at Blue Moon as a step down from where she was before. He is happy she is around, for many reasons!!

Why the sudden change in attitude? lin
You know, I have always looked at this scene as Maddie trying to appear non-chalant and unattached from any birthday emotions or religious beliefs. She sees that she might have been rude or insensitive to David's efforts and tries to make amends by affectionately telling him to shut up!

3. In the final scene, why do you think Maddie admits to David that she's "considered the possibility" of a higher being? lin
I think she really has considered the possibility and wanted David to know that her heart is not as cold as what he always seems to tease. However, I do think David was on to something when he asks her "How did this happen?" during that first conversation about believing in God or a Supreme being.
Which leads me to my one question: Maddie says she doesn't believe in divine intervention when unexplainable events happen but instead logical explanations. David asks with a hand covering his heart and a look of real concern "How did this happen?"
What might David think had happened to Maddie for her to feel this way? What about you?

...I get extra big brownie points, right?! ;D Well.....I can't think of anything else right now to add other than this is probably a pivotal episode as far as character development and David and Maddie's growing relationship. Cybill and Bruce play it so perfectly. The "How did this happen?" question gets me everytime! What about little yummy secrets in the script? Someone? Anyone?

I think they're both right. While Maddie is, IMO, being honest when she says she doesn't "give a flying fig about the altitude of [her] caboose," she is nonetheless aware that she's getting older...and perhaps hasn't accomplished some of the things she thought she would've by the ripe old age of 35. Certainly, at this time last year, she didn't expect to be struggling, financially (that other bottom line ;D) and personally. I would imagine that her life during her modeling days was much more social than it is now, though I doubt she had a friend as close as David back then (not that she would admit just how close a friend David is...).
So she walks into David's office, with the Wobblies wearing party hats and David channeling Elvis, and thinks, "This is it? This is my life?" And she gets out as soon as she can.
Actually, that scene is one of those where I cringe for her a little--she has, once again, lost an opportunity to endear herself to the staff. And poor David's face (and worse, his tone when he says "Excuse me" to the Wobblies)...Maddie, Maddie, Maddie...
On another note, it's interesting that this episode comes right before "Every Daughter's..."--there we see not so much dissatisfaction, but insecurity in her new role as detective/businesswoman. Hmmm...

Did someone slip a Mickie into the cake frosting?

3. In this ep, Maddie discounts magic, yet in Wonderful Job she confronts the Angel asking if he was a Genie or a Witch. What do you think caused the the big turnaround in her beliefs in the supernatural?
Well, these first three seasons are, in a sense, the Education of Maddie...with David, of course, as her teacher. Most of her dearly-held values are examined, and, in several instances, broadened or changed altogether. Maddie is a rationalist; she likes things orderly, likes things to make sense and have answers. The idea that some things "defy explanation" is unnerving to her.
However, as she gets to know David, I think she becomes more comfortable with the gray areas of life. Because he is not always contemplating, considering, analyzing, David is able to throw himself into things with an exuberance that Maddie comes to find very appealing...though, sadly for her, she can't completely embrace that exuberance when it comes to her relationship with David, which is another one of those things that "defies explanation" as far as she is concerned.

1. How do you think David feels when Maddie describes the past year as a "quantum leap backward"?
Poor David! He's a little crushed (though not as much as he is in "Atlas Belched" when Maddie wants to sell the farm). This past year has been quite a rush, as far as he's concerned. Though he lost his cushy, do-nothing gig when Maddie showed up, I think he likes the change; he's challenged, and trying to make money is at least as fun as purposely losing it. He's also found someone who lights his fire, who can match him, witty quip for witty quip...and the fact that she's drop-dead gorgeous doesn't hurt, either. ;D
But Maddie's comment makes it clear that she's not in the same "let's-blow-noisemakers-and-sing" place as he is. Happiness, as diane has mentioned, is a huge driver for David, and as time goes on, Maddie's happiness becomes increasingly important to him (though it seems, at the same time, increasingly elusive).

Very random question: In the mortuary scene, where does David get the cake from? Did he bring the birthday cake with him? Or did he swipe some from one of the funeral "party rooms"?
