Hi, everybody! I am glad to participate in the discussion! So, about the questions: 5. In the mortuary, Maddie gets very angry at David when he brings in the cake and candles. Then she does an about face and tells him to shut off the lights, re-light the candles and sit next to her, smiling. Why the sudden change in attitude?Well, I think at first she gets angry at him because she is supposed to be angry at him) He just didn't follow her instructions, she asked him not to mention her birthday again, but he did mention. But then she changed her attitude, because she saw how sincere his intentions were, he really cared about her birthday and wanted to make this day special for her. There is of course another version: may be she just wanted him to shut up and the best way to do that was to accept his congratulations

In the mortuary scene, where does David get the cake from? Did he bring the birthday cake with him? Or did he swipe some from one of the funeral "party rooms"?I think he brought it with him, that's why it was he who suggested they drink something. He already had something on his mind. But I like the idea with funeral "party rooms" as well

Here are Bees' bonus points.......though I m not sure she will like it.......
The surprise about the script is NO SURPRISES! My script is dated February 6 (for a show that aired February 11), and it is virtually identical to what aired......except for a bad "bone" joke during David's singing in the mortuary that surely got axed by the censors!
I'm sure it was a great gift to cast and crew that they had 5 full days with no last minute changes!
Re: Jen's question on the cake.......the script does define it as the leftover cake from the office. (Ha! I've never worked in an office that had leftover cake. I like to think of David sneaking a few pieces away and planning his little celebration!)

You've gotta love David's persistence...the guy gets knocked down, and just keeps on tryin'! I think Maddie was touched by his effort, too...the "shut up, turn out the lights and get over here so I have something to lean on" just gave her an excuse to be close to him. (Uh-oh...talk about "getting ideas"! ;D)

1. Maddie says she is not the kind of person who enjoys having a fuss made over her birthday. This seems rather odd for someone with her background. Most folks in the entertainment industry (I count modeling in there) crave ANY kind of attention. David thinks its because she is aging and Maddie counters with it being about the year being worse than the year before. What is YOUR take on it?
I think there are a few factors at work here. First, I think the birthday party embarrasses Maddie. Your birthday is personal....something to be shared with those nearest and dearest to you. And she realizes that she is surrounded by acquaintances who are basically obligated to be there by virtue of her being the boss. Then her awkward reactions make it even more of a *shrug shoulders* moment for those people.
And David wouldn't get that......these are his peeps......his playmates....and I don't imagine he has ever had a difficult time getting to know people, new or old.
I think he would have made a much better impression on our girl had he let her get in and settled, and sneaked into her office with a cupcake with a candle. And I think that's why she finally softens at the mortuary.....
Regarding Maddie's whole idea of birthdays, I do believe she measures her years in her accomplishments....I think when she turned 25 she said.."I've been alive a quarter century, what have I done?" I think what she hasn't realized at this point is that she has to change her measuring stick.......the money, fame, and fortune are more or less in the past.....and she is still growing to understand and appreciate the accomplishments she has made at Blue Moon......
Maddie, darlin'.....it's gonna take some time.

2. How did that body get out of the morgue without David and Maddie waking up?
Think there was something in the coffee???
Any other theories I have do not involve anything to do with sleeping!

3. In this ep, Maddie discounts magic, yet in Wonderful Job she confronts the Angel asking if he was a Genie or a Witch. What do you think caused the the big turnaround in her beliefs in the supernatural?
I think in the year(ish) between "In God" and "Job", Maddie changes drastically...and though I am not sure she would attribute any of it to having religious beliefs, she does become more open minded.

1. How do you think David feels when Maddie describes the past year as a "quantum leap backward"?
I think it's a kick in the gut. While he can't be totally in the dark about her disappointments and the changes in her life, his spirit just moves on...and he finds it difficult to understand that she doesn't do the same.
I also believe he has really come to care for her, and see the changes....both the ones he has made, and the ones in her. And I think it saddens him that she can't be happy about where she is......and with whom.

I think her anger is retro to the morning......he won't let it go, and it made her uncomfortable and defensive in the AM...why would he do it again?
She softens when she realizes it is just the two of them.....and that he is doing a sweet thing!
Plus, don't forget......she needs someone to lean on......in so many ways!

3. In the final scene, why do you think Maddie admits to David that she's "considered the possibility" of a higher being?
As an analytical comment, she wants him to understand that she has given careful consideration to the subject......that it is not just "something that people say".
But on a more personal level, she NEEDS him to know that she respects that his beliefs are important to him.
Then, when she finds out that he has prayed for her......well, what a jolt!

Maddie says she doesn't believe in divine intervention when unexplainable events happen but instead logical explanations. David asks with a hand covering his heart and a look of real concern "How did this happen?"
What might David think had happened to Maddie for her to feel this way? What about you?
I'm pretty sure David has no idea. I think that in terms of religion, he probably has never varied from the way he was raised. His religion is clearly a major component of his moral character. I don't think it is something he has ever questioned.
In my opinion, there are two ways you question the existence of a Supreme Being.....emotionally or intellectually.
The emotional usually seems to relate to bad things happening in your life and/or the world. We really don't know enough about her life, but we do know she is passionate, and could possibly react this way to the evil in the world.
I would think the intellectual is more likely in her situation.......she took some philosophy classes in college, and formed her belief from analyzing and researching.
Either way, without it ever being noted.....I think she changes her mind as her life goes on......
(Wouldn't it be fascinating to read the original background info on Maddie's character, and analyze the changes throughout the series? Wish it were all written down somewhere.)

Ooops....I did forget something that IS still in the script. FLYING FRIG! I love how the censors made them take the R out of Frig to make it Fig. Somehow Flying Frig was bad, but Flying FIG is OK. This was mentioned by Glenn in that retrospective mentioned on the Academy website (cited in another thread)

And I think it saddens him that she can't be happy about where she is......and with whom. I think too that David's chronological year and Maddie's have different start points. David is considering the growth in their relationship from the time she first entered the agency with the intent to shut it down. Maddie on the other hand is comparing it to the carefree, worry free blissful times where she was living off the interest generated by her millions accrued during her modeling years. As fun as the past year would appear, from a purely logical point of view, she isn't in the same ballpark from an economic security point of view.
