2) I think this is interesting ... Only thing I've come up with is Maddie becomes quite a detective at times, very different from her a year ago. She has the ability to smell out something wrong, her instinct I think. And she is usually sympathetic to cliants, probably wants to do her best marple
I agree, Marple. And we get to see, as well as David, another part of Maddie's heart. And David acts as if he knew she would feel that way, but was hoping she wouldn't long enough for them to get to Chicago.

First off I'd like to say...thanks for the love Marple, Gray, JPen & Bees...love you all back ;D! Also I would like to say hello to Witness, 1 more 'essed in the pot of great reviews and replies...good to see you here ! Ok, now to tackle some of my own questions, as this is the first chance I've had to do so... 1) What does the title "Funeral For A Doornail" have to do with this episode? This title has always perplexed me, although familiar with the term "dead as a doornail"; I never really understood its implication here until Marple (I believe) gave reference to a previous thread in which Diane shared her insight on the title itself. To further add, I would like to give the definition of a "dead as a doornail". As dead as a door-nail
Meaning
Dead - devoid of life (when applied to people, plants or animals). Finished with - unusable (when applied to inanimate objects).
Origin
This is old - at least 14th century. There's a reference to it in print in 1350:
"For but ich haue bote of mi bale I am ded as dorenail."
Also I found this information to be a little helpful in my overall understanding of this phrase's relation to ML in this instance. "Door-nails are the large-headed studs that were used in earlier times for strength and more recently as decoration. (<--As Diane informed us) The practice was to hammer the nail through and then bend over the protruding end to secure it. This process, similar to riveting, was called clenching. This may be the source of the 'deadness', as such a nail would be unusable afterwards."Now this leaves me to question, who exactly is the doornail here? Initially I felt Celia because she was her husbands strength, his pillar of beauty as she described his treatment of her as " some priceless antique". Also, Celia's reference to Roger slowly smothering her reminded me of the term "clenching" referenced above. Yet in re-watching it today she mentions Roger stating " Without you in my life Celia, life wouldn't be worth living". Apparently Roger felt he was useless if he didn't have Celia; possibly to provide for, to adore, as if she was inspiration for his entire being. Therefore IMHO, the funeral was for Roger whom died not in the explosion but when he thought his wife was deceased because he had no purpose in life other than to possess Celia in every way he could. Just grasping at straws~

2) Maddie has much compassion for Mr. Clements and believes that he has actually seen his wife, therefore promises to find Mrs. Clements based on his word. A) Why does Maddie believe Mr. Clements is actually sane enough to be trusted? B) Does this in any way have to do with Maddie's philosophy regarding people who are "meant" to be together finding each other? A) I have to say, a guy who would put a "hit" on himself, to me is nuts! I believe Maddie (& David as JPen mentioned) had compassion for an obviously distraught man in mourning. At the same time, David was willing to draw the line somewhere because romantic or not: His concern is more for his and Maddie's romance, not the demented dream of another man, obviously in need of some counseling. B) Therefore I believe Maddie is more apt to Roger Clements plight because of the "closet romantic" that she is; always hopeful for true love to rule. Although Maddie seems to vicariously live out her own romantic hopes though the lives of others; as if she had no hope for it to be in her own life. Or maybe she had not the confidence necessary to handle a love so intense as her love for David.

3) Do you believe Celia made the correct assumption regarding her husbands dedication to find her if she had merely attempted to divorce him? In a nutshell (pun intended) YES! A wealthy man who finds his way to a sleazy joint and hires a hit-man shows he has unlimited resources, not just money; but informational resources as well. I have zero compassion for this man's plight.

4) In Maddie's list of reasons for not wanting David to be "delighted" about escorting her to Chicago she says "Quizzing me on what our sleeping arrangements are going to be". What, if anything, does this tell you about Maddie's anxieties/thought process about introducing David to her entire family? I agree fully with Bees, that question was front and center in her mind! I giggle because I can imagine Maddie pacing back and forth with this thought. From this I can go into question 5 and state that although she really felt for Mr. Clements I believe it was easier for Maddie to deal with the Clements heart issues than her own. After the garage kiss (as someone else mentioned)... Maddie didn't trust herself in a non-professional environment with David. That is why it was so important that David looked at her proposition as a business proposition.

2. Why do you suppose Maddie doesn’t want David to be “delighted” to take her to a family wedding in Chicago?Well of course she feels that if he is "delighted" then he will be up to no good! Like trying to use this as an opportunity to try and get "horizontal"! For the record, me AND my avatar would have gone for well less than $1200. Just saying. ...and he would have too, gray. Later he referred to the missed occasion as to "an anything-can-happen-weekend"! I'm sure he DID give some thought about what the sleeping arrangements would be! His asking for money was just the (well-deserved, if I may say ) punishment for her stubborn don't-be-so-delighted-attitude. Didn't you just LOVE the look on his face when she told him she needed a favor and he just went "Done." simply, plainly, honestly. But she... just couldn't let it be nice, could she?

As all the questions have been answered more than a year ago (and quite good if I may add), I think I'll come up as usual with my fav scenes and quotes, shall I (and I hope at least somebody will bother to read...)? Here I go: Very sweet in general David's behavior in responding to Maddie's problem ("I need a favor..." - "Done.") I liked his face very much when he said that. His DELIGHTED reaction. Oh, sometimes blondes ARE dumb!!! And his teasing her with the charge was a great, classic Addisonism, of course. Absolutely LOVED his mocking smile (but then... I always do)! And later, his sincere "I hope you'll ask me again, and I hope I'll be smart enough to say yes." Helloooo, Maddie?! Need I to draw you a picture?? Well, but at least about that SHE was delighted (and not just "fine with it"). Many times to LMAO: M: "Is there any way we can talk?" D: "What if we use our mouths and tongues?" M: "He's a NSM." D: "Military guy, huh?" M: "No, NSM - nice safe man." D: "...his loss, my gain." M: "There you go again, acting delighted!" D: "I'm sorry! I'll try and do something about it!" D: "No backbone. I like that in a woman." Oh come on, I can't spare you the classic: M: "You!! ...are eye crust!" D: "The better to see you with, my dear!" M: "You are navel lint!" D: "Expensive navel lint!" M: "You are..." D: "Don't go much lower, they'll take us off the air!" His voice and face made it totally clear that he KNEW she would go for it, he just had to torture her a little more! ;D Agnes: "Ms. Hayes, Mr. Addison - there's a man here to see you." D/M: "Not now, we're fighting!!" A: "Yes sirs..." (she's got it again hit in her face, that poor sweetie!!) At the adult store: D: "She makes me come here. I hate this place!" Inside, M: "Oh my goodness!" D: "Oh my badness!" In the booth: M: "Gee, what usually happens in these rooms?" D: "What praytell makes you think I would know? ...all right then, what praytell makes you think I would tell YOU?" "One for the money, two for the glitz, three to get ready, now let's see some... something, OK? Something!" LOLedMAO!!! M: "Get off of me!" D: "Just my luck. Finally get you prone, and I face it the wrong way!" D: "You're pretty handy with a hose!" (you're gonna find out about that...) Ok, that's it. Hope I didn't bore you, but I'm kinda obsessed with good quotes as you can see

I like your choice of quotes here Sandra - I'm going to try to watch this one tonight - and if I haven't drunk too much red wine, I'll hop on and respond to your comments. We may be late to this party - but as usual - it's a helluva party! x

His 'delighted' response was indeed delighful! 'I'd rather you weren't so delighted' actually does crack me up- as it's such a funny thing to disagree on. She should obviously be delighted about how delighted he is but is obviously decidedly undelighted. She actually draws so much attention to it that she ends up revealing that he, of course, means a lot and therefore the issue of whether this could be read as a date is under debate. The mocking smile is one of his Addison best!

On re-watch, I am reminded just how funny this episode is! It's a classic with all the magical ingredients thrown into the mix!
I actually adore the scene in the adult bookstore the most - it's sooooo funny. Maddie and David in the peep-booth with David pretending he's never been in one before. 'David? That woman is going to take off her clothes; David? That woman is taking off her clothes; David? That woman has taken off her clothes' - and they say she doesn't get out much! - Also when Maddie is flicking through the porn mag with an absorbed look on her face- learn anything?
