7. The Dinner Scene: Ah, the undercurrents...the assumptions...the interruptions! Have a ball with this one--here's just a few questions to get you started: a) Do you think Maddie knows what David wants to tell her? b) Why does Sam bring up Maddie's fear of flying? c) Imagine, for a moment, that David did not get drunk and make an idiot of himself. Would the outcome of the evening have been the same? a) Not at first, but obviously Maddie knows it's something important and personal, and hopefully will shed light on David's behavior that day. Toward the end of his 2nd attempt (thwarted again by Sham!), I think she has it figured out. But of course Maddie has to wait until the end of IACM to actually hear him say it. b) I think it's Sam's way of making it crystal clear to David what their history is and how well he knows (or thinks he knows) Maddie. I believe this leads into a story about Sam driving Maddie home to Chicago and how they had to spend two nights together? At this point David knows that they are not merely "old chums." He retorts with something to the effect of, "she's not afraid to fly with me, pal." c)Difficult to imagine David not getting drunk when it comes to seriously emotional upheavals in his relationship with Maddie. It's completely in character. I think it further cements Maddie's understanding of what David was trying to tell her.

Thank you jpen for the questions. After a long time I watched this episode yesterday, and was impressed that this was really a great episode with the great writing and the terrific acting!
2. David, in the opening scene: Is he really thinking that Maddie "got horizonty" with Mr. Anonymous? (For fun: What other explanations do you think he could dream up for Sam's presence at Maddie's house?)
Yes, from the last scene of the previous episode, I think David was thinking the worst thing as bees said. And I also think he couldnft believe it completelyc Maddie cannot have done such a thingchis mind is reelingcand needs to make it clear from Maddie.
6. Why is Maddie so insistent on keeping her date with Sam? Do you think she understand that David is jealous?
I guess she had a great lunch time with Sam, and is excited about his offer of the date at the famous restaurant. And she wants to think about Sam separate from David. I suppose she doesnft understand that David is jealous.

7.b) Why does Sam bring up Maddie's fear of flying?I think the restaurant scene is sort of silent fight between the two man, a great one. Sam wants to show David that he knows her better than David and already intimate with her. But David makes a great counterattack; Sam gets to know those two travel together. I think it gives Sam a little shock. ;D c) Imagine, for a moment, that David did not get drunk and make an idiot of himself. Would the outcome of the evening have been the same?I think it would have been different, at least she wouldnft have done it with Sam! She felt David had ruined the dinner, embarrassed her and sorry for Sam for that. She also saw Sam was very supportive and dependable at the night. 8. What is the purpose of the gas station altercation?I think this happening gives Sam more perspective on David. He sees David quite a big man! And his charm, he has realized it. No wonder Sam feels a little nervous. ;D

Saving the biggies for last... 9. At what point does Maddie decide she's going to sleep with Sam...and why?I think it is at the end of the episode, she feels sorry for Sam and by the mood at that time. But I don't like it and I think she made a big mistake... 10. How would you characterize Maddie's reactions in the bedroom scene? What is she thinking at the end?IMHO, I donft think she slept with him the first night, because she seems very innocent when she tells David that Sam was her old friend since she was six. And in the very last scene, I think her expression shows her thinking of David and whether she has made a right decision or not. And She is thinking the fact that her relationship with Sam has proceeded to one step forward by it, and she doesnft look happy. 11. OK, time to confront the blue-eyed elephant in the room: Sam. What are your impressions of him, based on this episode?I thought he was a nice guy at first; smart, considerate and caring. But while watching this episode carefully, I felt he was astute in not getting into trouble and getting a good score. He stopped David from revealing they had met last night while Maddie introducing them. It is obvious he didnft tell her about Davidfs visit. It would hurt her feelings a little if she knew it. He doesnft want ruin his image which Maddie has; a perfect man, and shows a nice gesture by taking care of drunk David.

Sorry for missing last night gang, but that welcome home party for three of my buddies just returning from Iraq was rather, well, exciting. This morning I feel like I should be hanging on the coat hook in Maddie's office.
I will tackle these Q's this evening, when I get back from towing one of the floats in a local Halloween parade. If my head doesn't explode first. Ooohhhhh, my head.

I love all the questions......thanks gals......and I promise to get to them tomorrow during my recovery from jet lag day~

My apologies as well. Life got in the way and then it was so late - my brain was too tired to concentrate on these fantastic questions. I will get to them tonight.

I don't think Maddie knows, but she does sense that what he has to say is important to him. B. The flying bit is brought up to one-up David. Sam wants him to know that they were more than college friends or childhood friends and that they spent 2 days...and nights...on the road to get Maddie home. The whole dinner is about who can look the best in Maddie's eyes. C. David not getting drunk...well, we wouldn't have gotten the apartment scene, I guess...and then David wouldn't have had the last word...last 2 words, actually!! The purpose of the gas station altercation was just another way for us to laugh at David and to feel sorry for him at the same time. But mostly, to make Sam out to be a hero.

1. This is the first of three episodes in which Moonlighting pokes fun at its own shortcomings (and critics thereof). Are these intros time-wasters for you, or integral parts of the episodes? Agree with the others. These intros were a wonderful part of the show, whether just fillers or actually used to set up the episode. I think in this case, they were needed as I think many non-regular viewers were tuning in, and had to be spooled up on the continuing saga....a new situation for the show.

7. The Dinner Scene: Ah, the undercurrents...the assumptions...the interruptions! Have a ball with this one--here's just a few questions to get you started:
a) Do you think Maddie knows what David wants to tell her? Umm, every time I watch this I am unsure. I'm going to guess....not, but could be swayed either way.
b) Why does Sam bring up Maddie's fear of flying? Oh, Sammy knew EXACTLY what he was doing here. This was a, er, manhood measuring contest and Sam knew that he had several cards to play. The biggest one was that he and Maddie had a history. And what better way to highlight that than to show that she actually overcame fear of flying to come see him at Yale, and then add some whipped cream to that dessert by telling Dave that they DROVE back home to Chicago...taking a few days to do so.
c) Imagine, for a moment, that David did not get drunk and make an idiot of himself. Would the outcome of the evening have been the same? I think it would have continued into the posturing and one upsmanship that happens when two or more males are vying for the affections of a female. Usually this takes place in shuttle diplomacy, where the lady in question swaps dates back and forth, subtly leaving hints about nice things the competitor did so that the other dude raises the ante. In this case we have the contestants attempting to duke it out right in front of the prize. Unfortunately Dave is at a severe disadvantage here. His strengths are revealed over time by thoughts and words and deeds...not on a resume.

Maybe this is a guy/girl thing, but if I were Maddie I wouldn't think David was at a disadvantage at this point because his strengths were revealed over time by thoughts and words and deeds...not on a resume like Sam.
She knows David very well now and knows there is something between them that neither can fess up to because of fear of putting everything on the table.
Where David loses an advantage over Sam, in Maddie's eyes, is when he doesn't speak up when given the chance. He let's Sam do all of the talking even though Sam hasn't revealed his strengths over the last 3 years by thoughts, words or deeds!
One of the reasons Maddie becomes so confused.
