Begging? No, not begging. Encouraging. And for what it's worth - every man should feel he's held worth being heard until the end. But, well, we could do this endlessly - He was - was not - was too - was not - was too... Let's put it this way: obviously, we, the ladies here, were all obviously much wiser than Maddie, because we have been hit by our personal traffic accidents! And I know that I didn't put on the seat belt nor did I feel the need to.

Just flippin' a coin in: it was so difficult for him in the restaurant because she kind of had the upper hand here, it was her dinner with Sam that he was hijacking. It would intensify the whole what if she doesn't feel the same? She's not an either/or but he feels like an either/or when he wants to be 'the one' :-)
Love you guys :-)

Oh I just re-watched this episode again last night (almost managed the whole arc before I passed out after a long week at work - there's nothing like ML to lift your spirits and put you back in touch with your vive for life :-)) - and I still can't get over how the trunk scene still makes my stomach flip! I love that she turns up at his in the middle of the night- just like he did a few nights earlier. The heart leads you to real love at the most inconvenient times of the day haha :-)

And still they remain at arms length.....(blame the writers and the anticipation that the viewers craved)

As anyone who still looks at this board can see, I am on my own personal "Rewatching" mission (lol), and I may just be talking to myself but here goes... I had not seen this episode in decades, certainly not since I became a "mature adult" (now 45), and had forgotten how insightful this installment of the Blue Moon saga is. The questions have been answered quite nicely, but I had a couple of additional thoughts that I am going to take in order of the progression of the episode.
First, I don't think for a second that Maddie contemplates suicide except in the most superficial way on the rooftop. I agree that she goes up for some air to try and clear her head. Then she does what I think most of us do every time we are up high looking over the proverbial cliff - we look down! I know when I do that, I can't help but think how remarkably easy it would be to just step off and poof - it's over. It's not suicidal, it's just mesmerizing and sobering. I think that's where she's at.
As for the Dipesto vignette, YES: Maddie ABSOLUTELY believes that people who are right for each other will find each other no matter what. IMHO, she has a traditional (and quite naive) view that Mr. Right (with a big FAT capital R) eventually comes along, sweeps the lady off her feet, marries her and then they live happily, faithfully and I dare say, financially securely (because in Maddie's mind, her Mr. Right looks very good on paper), until death do them part. Maddie repeatedly comments on what she thinks romance should look like (Symphony in Knocked Flat) and in another episode (sorry, it's late and I forget which one) what she thinks marriage should look like (she wonders aloud what happened to the traditional way of doing things, and David replies that this is the 80's etc etc). Maddie is banking on the fact that she will recognize Mr. Right and instantly "know" it's him so that she can be "Sure, I'm sure. I'm certain."
As for the David/Cheryl Tiegs vignette... this one made me strap on my Thomas Alva propeller cap.
Maddie tells Albert that she knows exactly what happened to David - he's "in a gutter with all of the other derelicts". Really? Seriously, Maddie? Allow me to digress and pose a hypothetical question here: knowing David Addison the way we all do, what do you think? Do you think he is "wearing a blue Sunoco uniform with Dave stitched on the pocket?" I know what I think - he's going to land on his feet no matter WHAT. Now, he definitely won't take a conventional path getting there, and he's not exactly going to go back to school and become Buck Rogers, but this guy simply has a gift, a charisma, a "je nais sais quoi". He fundamentally understands people (and I might add, can charm the pants off anyone). Sorry Maddie - David has a TON of potential for success even though he opted to drop out of school to tend bar and support Tess. He has the INTANGIBLE qualities that breed success which are often far more important than the tangibles (nice mug, Ivy League education etc). How many people have we all met who are "book smart and street stupid"?! Maddie's blind spot is that she can only see the resume and not the innate talent and raw ability.
This sequence also points out that David does NOT fare well without Maddie. First off, he is smoking on the patio. While he did this a few times very early on in the series, we haven't seen him do it since "Knowing Her" and I don't think we ever see him do it again after this episode. Obviously, this is not a good thing. Second, check out his relationship with Richie in this scene: Richie is still drooling with jealousy of David - these brothers did not reconcile and realize how much they mean to one another because "Brother Can You..." DIDN'T HAPPEN! They imply women are property, and David has become rather arrogant (comments about how good he and Cheryl look etc). He has changed, and not for the better even if for the richer.
As far as the Cheryl Tiegs angle goes, I feel like I am circling around it but not quite hitting on it. Maybe Cheryl sees what Maddie missed - Cheryl thinks "Ace in the Hole Addison" is a catch! She isn't embarrassed by him, doesn't feel like she is marrying "beneath" her. (Although, based on the arrogant comments by both David and Cheryl as they come down the stairs, maybe she is only marrying David for his newly made fortune - we are not sure.) To me, I think this underscores that Maddie, a drop dead gorgeous model, was wrong to discount David and someone almost exactly like her (at least on paper), gets the guy Maddie could have had. Ouch! I think Maddie fears that David loves her just for her looks. With his comments on the patio about him having had the feeling that Maddie was someone special, she can see that his feelings go much deeper than that.
Last but not least, after this episode, I agree that we as an audience get left feeling like the kiss at the end of this episode "didn't happen." Granted, we've got "The Straight Poop" and a Dipesto/Viola episode next but even in the four episode arc that starts with "Blonde on Blonde", this kiss is never mentioned. I choose to look at it like this... it was Glenn et. al. who gave us, the audience, our Christmas present - the second "real" David and Maddie kiss and great googily moogily I'll take it!

Hi Maud No, you are not talking to yourself! I think quite a few of us are still checking in and I for one am really enjoying your private re-run! Your comments are beautifully observed and eloquently written. Keep up the good work! We can't get enough on this site and even though all the episodes have been well scrutinised and pondered over, you have proved that there is always something new to add. Such is the greatness of this wonderful show that just keeps on giving!

You are so right Sarahfromsussex. I am very much enjoying your comments Maud. I don't check in here as much as I used to, but every so often the Moonlighting obsession will hit me again and I find myself rewatching episodes and checking back here to read others comments. It has been nearly 30 years since this show aired and it seems I am never going to rid myself of this ML obsession Not that I want to of course.

I am always late to the party, and in this case, the party ended more than a decade ago. Still, I have enjoyed reading all these posts because I’ve been obsessed with ML for the past month.
Like most here, I watched the show when it originally aired and fell hard for David and Maddie. So hard, that Season 4 and 5, especially, broke my heart. I was livid after watching Lunar Eclipse as that final show was the ultimate slap in the face to the audience.
I have written to GC, expressing my interest in a reboot to set this once fantastic tv show straight. My hope is that he considers it.
No matter 36 years have passed, I still believe BW and CS would have chemistry between them.
If he doesn’t agree, thank God for fan fiction.

Hi quest1743. I am new here too! I have become obsessed with Moonlighting again after 35 years since I started to rewatch it recently. I would love a reboot of the show, even just one short movie would be nice. That's so great that you wrote to GCC. I wonder if he'll answer you.

I wish he would as I do believe there would be an audience for at least a movie on Netflix or Amazon.
It makes me sad that ML ended the way it did.
