6. Give us your interpretation of "The barrage in the garage".David takes the first swing out of frustration, but did he swing for the kill? His look after Sam pelts him is one of disbelief. Shocked that a guy of that stature could hit so damn hard and that Maddie would end up with someone who could be so physically abusive. And that look Bruce gives conveys David's confusion since the whole thing started in "Blonde on Blonde". Yeah, I know Dave threw the first punch, but he didn't proceed to throw him into a wall and incapacitate him. Not saying Sam should have just stood there, but now that I've read the written version of the Sam/Dave scene in Dave's apt where he pushes him back on the bed, it makes me think there is this other side to Sam that Maddie just doesn't know!! And she wouldn't like it either... Double whoa! I never projected Sam into the future, but he could EASILY turn into a violent dude at home. Yeah, this was a response to Dave's punch, but he put a real hurtin' on our hero. I could see where maybe Maddie ticks him off or one of the kids goes off the reservation and that violent streak comes out. Maybe not all the time, but the fuse can obviously be lit. Good, but scary, point.

OMG, gray....you are the man! Another great avatar for the ages. There is an alternate version around here that I played with, but I think I just may stick with this one. Hey!! You can't just say something like that and then leave us wondering!!

1. At the beginning of the episode, what do you think is the state of mind of each of the characters......Maddie....David....Sam?
Agree with the confusion that all three of them are feeling. But I'd like to add that Maddie is carrying a rather hefty load of guilt, too. Sneaking out, lying to Sam, avoiding his questions etc.--it's not the right way to behave, and she knows it! I think her guilt is significant in terms of how she treats Sam later, in particular her "goodbye grope" speech and plan to share "one last night" with him.

7. Regarding the deleted parts of the bar scene...do they make Maddie's dilemma any more understandable?
I just gotta say I think that whole exchange is just hilarious!! Maddie not knowing if she knows, what she knows, why she knows... ;D
But, I will say I wished they had left the deleted parts in because it shows a piece Maddie's heart, that she is truly confused and isn't trying to hurt or manipulate either man.
I just always wonder if the game would have been over much sooner if one of them had said the three words she needed to hear. "Marry me" didn't do it for her, did it? Nope, no "butter on that biscuit"!!!

Good, but scary, point. Yep, Shammy definitely gives more than he gets in the barrage...another subtle (!) message that he's not to be trusted. Of course, once again, Maddie is not there to see it, though it's obvious that David got the bloodier end of the stick. I have to say, as much as I love this story, I do get frustrated that Maddie never gets to see (as far as we know) the "real" Sam.

4. Why can't David express his feelings to Maddie during their confrontation?First and foremost, I think David has a very hard time expressing himself where his heart is put out there for someone who could possible hurt it. Think back to Tess and Jillian. I believe he loved those women at some point and then was hurt by them. So he is just plain afraid to put it out there. Secondly, he is so confused that she doesn't even think it matters if they talk about Sam. He kissed her the night before, she came running to his apt., and they shared the most intimate moment they have ever shared together. It's a wonder he didn't quip, "Maddie, wasn't that you sitting on my trunk in my living room last night?" And last, he really feels that Maddie should already know how he feels...and he's right, she does, I think, but she has to hear him say it to be sure. It's just the way Maddie is wired! Bees just saved me a lot of typing. ME TOO. You nailed it!

7. Regarding the deleted parts of the bar scene...do they make Maddie's dilemma any more understandable?
I love Agnes sticking up for David (and the stage directions: "Very little hope left" etc.), but I think it is pretty clear what Maddie's dilemma is: how things should be vs. how they are. She should love Sam, for all the reasons she enumerates here (which we already know), but she does love David, for reasons she can't, right now, fully comprehend.
The deleted lines do make it clear that Maddie hasn't seen the manipulative side of Sam that we've seen, though.
