This is the first time I watched this ep after 20 years, and I gotta say it was fun! Wouldn't have thought that; I remember it left me with a somewhat awkward feeling back then, but maybe only because I know how the story went on in season 4... anyway, discussing this ep I must leave out season 4, otherwise it wouldn't be fair (hmmm... I've heard someone say to not think about what's gonna happen the next six months... ;D)
Great and hilarous opening... very sexy, very funny, although very soon we see from Maddie's expression and reactions there's something not too good in store. Of course, gotta love David's line:
"A cab?!? Forget about it, I'll call my pimp, he's gonna pick me up at a corner!"
First, it continues very funny in the office:
"Miss Hayes! I don't know what it is, but you look great today!"
"No, I don't!!" - oh no, let the denial games begin...
David's entry is priceless, and how could he ever think his little performance would not make Agnes suspect anything?? It's
so cute to see how genuinely happy he is, and Maddie's reaction makes me really... argh!!
Ach, sigh, how I love that line
"We did it, it's done, well done, I might add, over and over again!"
Their reaction to Margaret's story is so sweet, and it makes me want to shake Maddie to her senses, especially if you consider her later reaction to Mr. Kendall's visit, when she tells him that if they love each other that's all that matters.
I love the superb acting - again it's David's silence when he's all by himself in his office, before Maddie comes in and after he returns from the bar, that speaks volumes and makes us feel his inner devastation: after the emotional rollercoaster of the past days, after Sam finally retreating, when he thought he had finally arrived at the point where his dreams came true, he's presented with such a deep hit from Maddie...
My favorite scene - and IMHO one of the best scenes ever - is the first car conversation.
Please, folks, I need somebody to tell me that there's nothing wrong with me just because I feel the maddening urge to smoke an
entire packet of cigarettes after having watched this scene. I mean, honestly, listening to David's words, listening to his voice and tone when he speaks them, watching his face expression gives me - in a region
far south of the brain -
really a sensation of... uhm... OK, OK, this is a family board. Don't let me get carried away.
I'm callllllllllmmmm!!!! *steam*
Next scene. Starting again very sexy (am I the only one to notice a drop of sweat on David's face?!) and funny, I love David's outburst (
drop it, Nancy!!!):
"The same reason why Christmas keeps happening - it's terrific, that's why!!"
But the fight that follows... at first funny, yes, and it leads you to expect, to
hope for another explosion of passion, but Maddie gives some very nasty lines there. Why is she saying them? Avoidance, I think. Unfortunately, she has decided to let her rational side have the upper hand again, and that creates in her eyes the necessity to push David away, just to be sure he won't try to steamroll her again. But, secretly, she doesn't want that, because she should have been glad when David claimed everything had been just a sacrifice of his... she
knew it wasn't that way. Oh, blondie... I don't get ya. What on earth is wrong with
wild and frenzied?? Anybody??
Bad episode for Maddie's girls, I'd say...
Ah, if the damn phone hadn't rung... anybody who hasn't checked this out, do it:
www.fanfiction.net/s/5503525/1/What_Wouldve_HappenedThe solution of the case is very cute (funny: "Have a seat, let me hold your halo!") and heartwarming, and of course the best line is
"Boy meets girl, boy won't take no for an answer, boy gets girl."
And I love the way Maddie's looking at David when he delivers it.
The final scene...
Of course, David doesn't really mean what he's saying. Maybe his intentions were to challenge Maddie - because he
knew she wasn't so sure herself about the
pact crap. Well... it worked, I'd say. ;D
I love Maddie's expression right before she leans in to kiss him: very sweet, very loving - and very deliberate. To me, it was a clear decision she had made that moment. Makes it even harder to understand what's about to happen... but again, to be fair, that shouldn't be considered now.
